A Trip Report (of sorts…)

Angeles City seems to exist for two purposes only: drinking and fucking, probably in that order. I always see a lot more evidence of the drinking than the fucking, but that may just be because the fucking is mostly taking place behind closed doors.

I’m really not much of a drinker, as those who have traveled with me well know. The bars in AC have zero appeal beyond being the place to find fuck toys. They are for the most part dumps, often very smokey, and most feature loads of drink sluts who want nothing more than to convince you to buy them an overpriced glass of orange juice or an SML so they can get a commission. Sometimes things get lively in the bars, but less so these days than was the case 4-5 years ago. A series of crackdowns by the police have definitely had a chilling effect on the in-bar entertainment.

I arrived in AC this time with no preconceptions for what type of trip this would be. I had decided, I don’t know why, to try something new and give a DIA girl a spin (more on this later), but that was the extent of my planning. I brought along enough money to do some very serious damage but an open mind about what form this trip might take.

As all who have been there know, the trip to AC is pretty brutal, and I arrived exhausted despite having been upgraded to business (w/ flat bed seats) on United between SFO and Seoul. I flew into Clark on Asiana, and cleared immigration and customs in a matter of minutes.

I walked outside, expecting a driver from the Pacific Breeze Hotel, and didn’t see one. Fuck it…I’m not one to wait around, so I just grabbed a cab, stopped at Natalia’s to exchange some money, and went to the hotel. The staff there fell all over themselves apologizing—both their main driver and his back-up had car problems, so they had no one to come get me. Good thing I didn’t wait around!!!

I was too tired to hit the bars (it was 1am and my body said it was 11am) but the desire to pop one off was strong. What to do? Just as I was walking down to the desk to get some info about using the phone, a cute little spinner came walking through the lobby. I motioned her over and asked if she was “coming or going?” She said “going,” so I asked her if she’d be interested in coming again. She didn’t get the joke, so I asked if she wanted to make a little more money for no more than an hour of effort. Big smile. Up we went, off I went (eventually) and out she went, happy with 600p. I have no recollection as to why I decided to check out DIA (Date in Asia—www.dateinasia.com), but I registered (free) and within moments was getting messages from tons of ugly, old hags from the Philippines (mostly) and elsewhere, all looking for marriage. Not promising! A few responded who seemed slightly more promising, and one apparently cute girl of 22 dropped a note expressing interest, so I checked out her profile, and she noted that she had no interest in an ongoing relationship. I'm with you regarding AC these days. It's all business unless a guy makes the effort on the less than obvious opportunities. She was present and accounted for, working in Shadows Bar nightly as of 3 weeks ago, as well as at the end of November. The part about the WU sponsor from England is true. Great report! I just got back from a week in AC, and my experiences also were along the lines reported here. Lots of ghosts from sex trips past just wanting to drop by. Of course the little guilty white man inside of me prevents me from stiffing 'em like BD. But a 1000 pesos gratuity for overnight or 500 for a couple of hours ensured I had about half a dozen offers for company texted to me a day.

During the week I was thinking the new AC has taken an interesting turn. Those who are there to drink and be attention whores are hitting the bars, and those who are there to fuck a lot are doing just are doing fine staying outside the bars. I think the bar owners have shot themselves in the feet with their pricing and the building of too many bars.

The plethora of bars has resulted in lots of competition to hire girls and retain them. Salaries and commissions have gone up, and the girls don't fear the sticks of fines and getting fired anymore. The lose their job, getting another is not a problem - or if she is a good lay then she can just freelance her regulars.

Also, seemingly violating the most basic laws of market economics, the owners have been raising barfines quite quickly - but not the girl's share. It seems many girls have taken the initiative in cutting out the zero-value-adding middleman. This has been are real win situation for me - and seemingly like minded mongers - as a sex filled week in AC has suddenly gotten much much cheaper. Often times on the AC boards you will see apologists posting that you should support the bars because without them what would AC be. Well, I think I am seeing what that would be - and I like it!

P.S. The Nifty/Rio girls are also getting into cutting out the middleman game in their own way. A sample costs 3 tequilas or 360 pesos. But the official line is that if you come it is 700 pesos. I did four samples and every time the curtain closed the girl insisted I nut in her mouth - sometimes suggesting I give her a little tip. Why wouldn't bars in AC do it too? The key is if everyone does it and makes a cartel, Adam Smith can take a leap. I find the hotels in AC act just like this. They're all way overpriced, compared to a similar hotel anywhere else (I've been) in SEA.

Food for thought... While it is compassionate to have concerns for the well being of others, I would submit that getting "stiffed" is a state of mind. Does the customer at Macy's feel there are getting "stiffed" knowing full well they can procure the same items at Walmart for 30%-50% less? No, they do so because they realize non-monetary value. Drop-in's may not get compensated in an amount others feel is fair but I can state in my experiences they leave satisfied.

My room was the poolside jaccuzzi room. It's the only room with both a jaccuzzi and a balcony. The value of the jaccuzzi is obvious. Girls also like the view of the pool and being able to sit outside on the balcony, and some like the idea of a voyeuristic fuck on the balcony.

There is truth to what you say. Some of the non-monetary value comes from being able to relax in a nice place, being fed, being treated like a friend rather than a puta, having a nice bed, etc. I really try to treat the girls with great respect, and I get a sense they appreciate it. I respectively disagree that without the current GoGo bar model of AC, then AC would vanish. There are plenty of venues in Asia that thrive with the vast majority of girls working without affiliation with some entertainment venue. Batam, Indonesia was a good example of this.

Of course, new types of entertainment venues will have to take root to give people places to go. In AC, it appears that large showbars are partially filling that spot - and providing a nice place to meets girls to join you when they aren't working. Perhaps we will see some more venues like R and B succeed and locate more centrally. Not predicting this will happen. Also, with the influx of southeast asian customers, KTV-style pubs would also filled a gap.

I am not predicting the demise of the AC GoGO, but clearly the girl meets boy market is finding a new way to get to its equilibrium. It seems like corrupt city officials and bar owners have squeezed to hard and some oftheir rents from the prostitution market are slipping through their fingers.

Also, interesting to read from you Sober guys about drinking. Hey MongerX - as you know, I went to Tijuana probably 150 times from 1998 - 2006. I had ONLY about three ladies total ask me to take them somewhere outside the Zona... Of course my Spanglish is only So-So.
But in AC - I get about 70% of the ladies asking me to take them somewhere else - of course money is their top priority - but the dynamics of meeting ladies in AC is mucho facil. The AC ladies are great hosts as well as fuck buddies. I agree, the bars do not create the market for P2P in AC.

Other than Mount Pinatubo making another statement or a terrorist attack, the only entity which may impede growth of entertainment venues in AC are restrictions by the central government. Of those three the central government is most likely but typically temporary. The Asian economies in Korea, China and Japan are doing well enough to sustain growth for years to come. I see prices continuing to rise and feel it won't be long before they are on par with Thailand. We'll all be reminiscing about the "Good Ole Days". Going forward, it won't be about just snagging the hottest gals at the going rates but obtaining the best value for time invested. This will define true mongering skills. You have a good head start BD, continue to blaze the trail!

Good point about the hotel. I've enjoyed staying in balcony rooms at the Wild Orchid (and eating the above-AC-quality food they have at their restaurant), and the girls like it too--maybe it's as much the room as my charming personality (and cash).

Bwana: I have always thought about the convenience of flying into Clark. However the cons tend to outweigh the pros for me. I will take into account that transportation to the hotel (ie. PB) will cost 2200 PHP more each way. About $100 R/T. However a ticket to CRK from the east coast where I fly out of usually costs over $100 more than one to MNL. Lastly, the arriving flight to CRK on Asiana is 11:45pm! So it seems any advantage of flying into CRK is erased in my case.

No expert opinion to offer. The reasons I fly into CRK are: (1) I'm a Star Alliance guy, so I get Star Alliance miles all the way, and even got a free upgrade on Asiana; (2) I hate Manila traffic and the Manila airport with a passion; (3) I like knowing that when I touch down I am 15 minutes from getting laid (I'm not big on delay of gratification); (4) I'll swap $100 for the time spent getting between Manila and AC (see point 3 above); (5) finding a girl in AC at 11:45 (or 12:45 or 1:45) is not much of a challenge, and after a long trip I just want to pop one off and hit the bed alone, so no real downside to the late arrival.

I agree with BD. My last 2 trips to AC were into CRK on Asiana and the least hassle of any of my trips. I will always pay a little extra not to have to deal with baggage claim and immigration. I too am a Star Alliance guy and have been Star Gold and/or 1K the last 10 years. I just want to know how you got upgraded .

I'm a Star Gold also (CO Plat) and would like to know how BD got the Asiana CRK upgrade.

Star Alliance upgrades are per-segment, capacity controlled and only good on "full fare" (Y and B fares) so a LAX/ICN/CRK OZ round trip upgrade would cost 100,000 miles + $2,100 B fare for AUS/CRK. For AUS/LAX upgrades, I would rely on CO domestic complimentary upgrades.

That be MIGHTY pricy in mileage terms.

It is getting sooo damn complicated to game the damn FF game. I am trying to keep my CO plat status AND maximize my number of transpacific business class trips. 4 or 5 trips a year can maintain my mileage balance and Plat (soon to be UA 1K) status.

In 2010, I had 5 trips to the PI in biz class. They ranged in cost from $1300 + 2 SWU to $2200 plus 60,000 miles. 2011 looks to be a major readjustment with the CO/UA merger. CO/UA fare alignment is looking to to increase my outlay from $500 to $1,000 per trip.

In the beginning of 2010, a "discounted full fare" (B fare class) could be had for $1,600 and upgraded for net 10,000 miles (50,000 for the upgrade - 40,000 RDM's earned) and no copay, PLUS a 50% bonus on EQM's giving a boost to Elite qualifying and a damn flexible ticket.

No More. Now...

Round trip AUS/CRK biz class award ticket would be 125,000 miles. AUS/MNL on CO upgraded is currently looking like $1,400 fare + 60,000 miles + $1,000 upgrade copay. B fares have skyrocketed to almost $3,000

So ALL of my banked miles are on CO (140K) and I have 2 CO SWU's that I can use for one AUS/MNL roundtrip, too bad they are no good on OZ.

2011 is looking to be difficult.

My upgrade was a comp upgrade, not using miles or anything. I had a really shitty middle seat in the back of the plane on the ICN-CRK flight, so I went to the transfer desk in ICN to see if they could come up with a better seat. I handed them my MP card (I'm 1K 2million miler) and she played at her computer for a couple of minutes and then handed me a boarding pass for a first class seat.

I used UA systemwide upgrades for the UA segments, as I flew enough to earn 10 of them last year.

Since I was in town, I checked up on Visa for you over the weekend ;) ;) ;) According to the always reliable ladies in Shadows bar, she has gone back to the probince (Samar??) now. Presumably she was only back in service last month to raise a little extra holiday cash. Sucking dicks to raise money to better celebrate the birth of Christ is a time honored tradition in a very religious country like the Philippines.

Bwana, that sounds like an excellent trip. I've had a few of those in Brazil with the right mix of old favorites and new gems, and they're such a pleasant time. Not quite so cheap there, mind you, but you'd still have been happy, sounds like, spending a lot more money. Boy, there were things I didn't like about living in POA, but there are things I sure miss and having regular great girls to hang with is one of them, and harder to do with infrequent vacations. Again, good job.

That is a 5 hour flight so not to be dismissed as insignificant. You just asked for a better seat and not explicitly an upgrade?

I'm not yet a Million Miler but I'm a CO Plat with just as much bis flying as a UA 1K, I wonder if I could get that sort of treatment.

The part about the also having an Australian sponsor concurrent with the preexisting British sponsor came from a fairly reliable source a couple of months ago. Presumably that could be part of the problem as well.
