It was a long flight to CTG from CLO, with a brief stop in Bogota. No problems.

I caught a cab to the Playa Mar building, where I had rented apartment 301 through Juan Ventura. I definitely endorse him, as have others. He speaks English well, and was there for me.

At $100/night, it was a pricey two-bedroom unit, but it was all he had available in beachfront. I like to treat myself on my all-to-infrequent vacations, so I took it. 301 is about the best unit in the building, with a huge living room and a big balcony with a hammock. It had its own Wi-Fi router. Here are a couple of shots of the balcony from the beach and the view from the balcony. I didn’t take any interior photos.







Juan Ventura met me there shortly after I arrived, and helped me with some information about Cartagena. He gave me the name of a good seafood restaurant—pricey, he said, but good. I wanted to splurge my first night. So I took a cab to La Langosta.

I was the only one there on a Sunday night around 9 PM. The food was excellent. I had an appetizer of camarones in some kind of sauce in little pastry shells. It was so good I forgot to take a picture until I was halfway through, here’s what the remaining two look like:



Then, after discussion with the waiter (Luis Garcia, 318-289-1079—he gave me his number for some reason), I ordered a 1-kg local langosta (some sort of lobster without claws).



It was really tasty. The only problem with these shellfish is that it takes a lot of work to get some of the meat.

Total bill: 125,000 pesos. When I went to the bathroom, I saw something I’ve never seen before in the urinal. There was a little soccer goal basket with a hanging soccer ball, presumably to give you something to aim your stream at.



There were a couple of bright parrots in a cage outside the restaurant, adding a bit of color to the elegant décor.



Luis gave me the card for a club he recommended. I didn’t get to try it.



I wanted to go to La Dolce Vita that evening, but only got as far as the steps to the front porch—not even past the gate.

A cutie was at the front desk, just leaving as I was asking directions to LDV. She had stopped to wait for me outside the door, and she asked me if I was going to LDV. When I said yes, she told me it was closed tonight, that there was some sort of police action. She worked there normally, she said, but was available now since it was closed. She wanted 150K. I told her I had only 100K. After a bit of negotiation, she agreed to it. And back upstairs we went.

The next day I slept late, taxied to Western Union to get some pesos—again at 1,780. As the cab pulled up, I realized I forgot my passport, so back and forth again. I was chagrined to find later that the Internet café/cambio/misc. a few hundred feet down the road was giving 1,800.

Time for the beach. I consulted my notes (primarily 10/06 Schmidt: Hunting in Cartagena), and headed to Hollywood Playa. Tony Number 1 apparently has spotters, so I had just started walking along the entry into the beach when Eric accosted me. I pretty much ignored him, but he dogged my heels into the beach area, and then Tony came over. I told him I was looking for Faustino, and after it was clear I wasn’t interested in Tony I got to meet Faustino. He’s the guy with the beach chair concession, that Tony would be renting from and marking up.

But really, all I wanted to do was look around and see what was there. I walked back and forth for about 20 minutes (my first-day sun exposure limit), with Tony “offering to help” (bothering) me every 3 minutes or so. There did not seem to be much available talent on the beach. Mostly couples, with a few scattered girls that did not look like salable goods. The only attractive ones were in a group, obviously civilians. And the beach was pretty crowded, so the location Schmidt recommended to put your beach chair was not available. On the other hand, it was around 2 PM, probably too late for much action, and certainly to get a good spot..

He owned an apartment there, and operates the web site Cartagenainfo.com. We talked for a while, as he was a valuable source of information. He said that he came out there every night, that there were plenty of street girls walking up and down this very street.

Why, there’s two now, he said, coming out of the building across the street (The Atlantis). He beckoned them to come over, and they did. I was introduced to Claudia and Tatiana. They wanted 300,000 pesos for both, and after a bit agreed to 250,000, with a tip if they made me happy. When I went through security at CTG airport, I was sent upstairs to a little room where an X-ray scanner was set up. One of the security guys followed me upstairs, and started filling out a paper. It was a release giving my permission to be scanned—at least they’re more civilized than TSA. The machine had a moving belt that I stood on, and it moved me back and forth to scan me. I have no idea why I got sent there. Perhaps since I entered Colombia in Cali, they thought I was smuggling out the drugs they suspected I had purchased there on my trip a month ago. I’m sure I’m off the Interpol list by now, and I never actually got caught, although maybe Colombian records are better (the last time I was in Cartagena I was on my way to Barranquilla with my pilots to check out a landing strip in the jungle—in 1972). And I haven’t done anything like that since then (maybe a few other things ☺). Certainly no illicit drug commerce or even use for 20 years. Anyway, the guy was very nice and thanked me for my cooperation.

On the flight back, I had to hand it to Spirit Air for creating new revenue models, hopefully making cheaper fares possible:
