I don't know that you can say it is better, because YMMV. The dollar made a brief rebound in Dec 2008 to 2.5. I saw an opportunity and transferred a large six digit amount from the US to Brazil. Then you put on top of that that the money makes about 12% on a certificate of deposit. So if you include the interest, by the end of of 2011, I will be buying stuff at about 3.5 reals to the dollar. If you are long on reals, then Brazil is not expensive. I suspect most people on this board are long in dollars and I agree, Brazil has become pretty expensive.

I think Brazil is actually at 1rst world prices but it is still a third world developing nation. How many years has it been? Brazil is hardly a third world developing nation any more. Brazil has its issues (continued high poverty, a poor public education system, lagging public infrastructure), but in most respects it is a thoroughly modern and developed country, if often a rather disorganized one. Its economy is growing rapidly, it is now highly industrialized, its university system is without a doubt the strongest in Latin America and produces leaders in many scientific fields, its currency is among the very strongest in the world, etc.

The girls there get their asking prices not because there are a bunch of dumbass gringos running around overpaying, but because there are plenty of well-to-do Brazilian men who are willing to pay the asking price. Prices are up because the national economy is hot, and loads of professional men there have the money to play. They tend to play at the high priced termas because the Ts are secure venues for doing so. Guys with less money can still find places where they pay R$1/minute. What has happened is that as the economy has strengthened and wages have risen (especially at the high end), the spread between prices at the low cost (privês and street) and high cost (termas) options have grown, just as classic economic theory would predict. Costs have gone up in most mongering locales as their economies have improved, but less so in places like the Philippines because their economy sucks. As "markets" go, prostitution functions in a fairly rational, self-regulating manner.

And that figure you give--$600-$800/day--seems a bit off the wall. I did the calculations for my latest trip. Excluding airfare (which is a wash for me when I'm choosing among my favored locales), I averaged $400/day with two girls, meals, local transportation, a few beers on the beach, and a very nice apartment. I could bump it up to over $600/day if I went to 2 of the better termas each day, but that's rather unnecessary. So $600-$800/day is hardly conservative. You have to be intent on burning money to average that. I spend more per day in Rio than in AC, no doubt, but I enjoy most everything about Rio quite a bit more. The comparative cost/benefit ratio is, in my opinion, better in Rio than AC, as an example. I don't expect that would necessarily be true for others, but I don't factor others' c/b calculations into my equation.

I don't have a problem with anyone else feeling that Brazil is (1) expensive or (2) too expensive for their tastes. To each his own. But exaggerating the costs helps no one make an informed decision, and without some direct experience, claiming that the prices are "ridiculous" is utterly baseless.

No way in hell is Rio a developed nation..not yet. They have one of the most corrupt police forces in the world and one of the worst prison systems....squalor beyone repair. Their infrastructure is crumbling. Just see what happens during the Olympics and World Cup. It will be a joke. As long as the favellas exist on such a massive scale, no way can they be considered a developed nation. They are having problems designing and constructing infrastructure because they don't have the skilled labor to finish the projects or to even pass basic safety standards. I am just going by what two good friends have told me. Now if you know Rio well, you can surely find ways to keep your costs down I am sure.

What I pay varies from day to day, but this is a reasonable average. But anyone who's not a total newbie can live on a budget like this. Good fun can be had in the "Segunda Divisão" termas like 502. Seems like almost no one tries these places anymore.

As to your theory, I can only speculate as well. I think there are just a lot more girls in the game for $$ only and they prefer ST. One pop and they're out with R$200-250. Also, fewer faveladas and girls from way out of town seem to hang at Balcony than was the case with Help, so fewer are really looking for a bed as well as some cash.

In the end I'm not sure the termas sweat the absence of gringos too much. There were plenty of brasileiros in the places. They are not raising prices because the real is getting stronger; they raise them because inflation is reasonably high (compared to the US). In talking with the manager at 4X4, he said their pricing is based on what they think the locals can and will pay. Some mongering scenes are geared towards sex tourism, some are geared toward locals. Overall, the Brazil scene is geared towards locals. If sex tourists stop coming I don't think they'll lose any sleep over it. Our absence is noticed but our business is not a make-or-break factor.

End of an era? Perhaps for some. Not for me. I still have a blast in Rio. It still beats all the other options for me.

Did I read that correctly ? $275.00 for your average good time in a terma ? A few drinks , admission a 40 minute session and possibly a couple more drinks ? Wow , things have really changed . I haven't been to Rio in a year and a half but I believe the last time I was in L the average prices were more like 270-300 reals for what you described . To tell you the truth Rio stopped being a reasonably inexpensive destination at least a few years ago . Since then prices have gone up on just about everything . Still Rio has a lot to offer . It's still one of the most amazing places i've ever been to . The women are amazing and the food ,music , beach scene , and everything else just add to it . All that is just gonna cost you now .

Yes, things have changed, but that $275 is from L'uomo, and you can do better at 4X4, or at any of the places when they offer discounts.
