When you think about it, it’s a wonder that Angeles, formerly Culiat (vines) still flourishes today. In its infancy it was settled by a handful of farmers from San Fernando by Don Ángel Pantaleón de Miranda, the Mayor of sorts in San Fernando very late in the 18th century. In 1899 it was the seat of the entire Philippine Government around the time its Army defended the city in the short lived Battle of Angeles from the US Army aggressors.
It had basically remained a barrio of San Fernando until Clark Airbase was established in 1903. The airbase created jobs and swelled the population. During the Viet Nam War, CAB was the largest military installation outside of the USA. During that period CAB was also a voluntary TDY (temporary duty) training destination for airmen throughout SEA. Even as a voluntary option, it was almost impossible to get on the waiting list since every soldier, sailor, airman and marine was dying to party here.
When Mount Pinatubo, which separates the west coast of Luzon from the central plains erupted, it spawned the second largest terrestrial eruption of the 20th century. Two million people in the region were affected by the eruption. In addition to the severe damage sustained by these communities, roads and communications were damaged or destroyed by pyroclastic flows and slurry. The entire city was blanketed with soot and ash, in some areas over a foot deep. If you happen to chat with anyone who was here at the time they will undoubtedly share how difficult that period was to survive.
Prior to the eruption nationalistic sentiment was on the rise and with the end of the war, America was closing overseas bases and determined CAB was an asset it no longer needed to maintain. Once the volcano popped it only made the decision to close up shop that much easier. Upon closure the base was abandoned and looted in the years that followed. The Oasis Hotel which had serviced the airmen had to lower its rates from the mid thirty USD range to about fifteen just to survive. Angeles could have easily become just another tiny city in Pampanga however the community rallied to establish the Clark Freeport Zone which has become the predominant business hub for Central Luzon.
My first visit to the PI was in 1971 but even after the war ended I continued to make occasional trips here. In 1993 an army buddy asked if I wanted to join him on vacation to Angeles. I figured Angeles had closed down and dried up but he insisted it was not on its deathbed, still had a heartbeat, which it did to my amazement. We came for a week staying at what was at that time its premier hotel, The Clarkton.

For mongering activities last night was one of the best occasions I have witnessed in AC for a number of years. You'll notice in the pics visitor count was awfully low and the clubs I entered were packed with a high percentage of 7's to 10's on my look's scale. Much better than at anytime during this visit. As stated I tend to focus on the smaller clubs however tonight I may chose to pull a hottie from a show club as my BF expenses to date have been moderate and it's my last night since I'm headed to Subic tomorrow afternoon.
