Delayed But Not Deterred

The flight to Manila was FUBAR! When Orbitz called three days before the flights to make me aware of a minor adjustment in the itinerary, their CSR stated my layover between Seattle and Inchon, Korea would be shortened by thirty minutes. Good news, the shorter the travel time the better. Good news until I found myself at Seattle International with the connection to Inchon nowhere to be found on the Departure Board. The Orbitz CSR emailed the revised flight time however I reviewed only the departure time in Seattle and arrival time in Manila since those were my only concerns. Big mistake in not reviewing the dates, assuming they remained the same. Turns out upon further review in Seattle my departure date from Seattle and arrival date in Inchon were the same. I guess Korean Airlines forgot there's an International Dateline in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

To make matters worse KAL didn't have ANYONE staffed at Seattle International as they had no flights scheduled that day. After three full hours on my cell listening to KAL and Orbitz respective CSR's play the blame game we finally came to a resolution, in their minds anyway. I would have to endure and overnight in Seattle and Inchon, delaying my arrival in Manila by thirty six hours. Not a happy camper but seeing a speck of light at the end of a long dark tunnel and having no other option I agreed. Unfortunately I didn't expect to be exiting any airport until I arrived in Manila so I wasn't prepared for the record breaking low's in Seattle and Inchon. I paid for accommodations in Seattle which KAL agreed to reimburse and they put me up at Hyatt Hotel, Inchon but I froze my ass off whenever I ventured out of the hotels, sporting only polo shirt and shorts.

I HATE flying but have been for the most part pleased with Korean Airlines the past few flights however if they refuse to offer a considerable perk which I will insist upon once home, our relationship will come to an end. Shit happens on occasion if you travel frequently but this situation was unbelievable and I feel KAL was primarily at fault. The only good thing so far is that KAL is in the Star Alliance so my FF Miles can be credited by a number of other carriers and the construction of an expanded International Terminal at Clark Air Base is being fast tracked by the various government entities.

Traffic in Manila is as bad as it gets with the Black Nazarene festivities and the Pope's arrival in a few days. The first week was spent with my Syota in Subic. Taking a taxi from MNL to the Cubao Terminal, we hooked up there then caught a Victory Liner Express to Olongapo. If you consider bus travel from Manila to Subic even though the Pasay Terminal is closer to the airport, it's much less likely you'll find an Express or SCTEX Bus available which can add two or more hours to the trip. It's always good to be with my honeyko and was this time as well but much of that time was work related, investing effort mostly online expanding her existing business. You'll just have take my word for it, she worth every second. We stayed at the Palm Tree Resort and did find some time for Zoobic Safari, swimming at The Wild Orchid and floating barhopping but that was pretty much it.

Cathay Pacific did the same thing with departure from LAX and arrival at HKG missing the "+1 day" on my confirmation. So I unthinkingly booked my Tiger flight a day before my arrival. But over a few days after booking, I realized the problem, and had to pay about $60 to change the flight into Clark one day later. Fortunately that was the only damage.

Yeah, it wasn't a picnic HM. I had planned on an overnight stay in Manila with my original travel dates but since I arrived at 11:00 am we decided to complete the trip to Subic that same day. The problem I've found with Clark is from the west coast you'll have long layovers with any of the existing carriers and higher prices. In the end I haven't found any flights with Clark as a final destination that saved time or money. It will be great when they expand Clark as I would prefer to avoid the drive in from Manila.

I feel your pain. A few years ago my December flight from LAX to BKK with a short layover in NRT got hosed up due to a late departure out of LAX.

Having to transit from Narita to Haneda in December wearing cloths that are appropriate for Bangkok was not pleasant.
