Over the next week or two, I'll be populating information about various eating choices and recommendations as they stack up in AC.

I've been coming to AC for roughly 11 years now and living here the last 1.5 years. The town has changed dramatically in that time, in some ways for the worse (inflation, far fewer FOB gals), but in others a dramatic improvement (food choices). Its certainly not Bangkok, but there's no reason to go hungry here or gripe about the food in a developing country mongering destination. In my experience those that do, rarely venture beyond the same old tourist traps often with barely passable "food" like Kokomoz, Tequilla Reef, Margarita Sta, etc.

Fact is it would take me months to post detailed info a available choices, so I'll start with some high level info ordered by time of day, location, or cuisine.

If anyone is looking for a specific type of food or dish, let me know and I'll give you my rec.

I'll start with breakfast as that's the easiest and hardest to fuck up.

Note: anytime your ordering something, be very explicit in terms of what you want. Repeat and make sure they either write it down and/or repeat it back. Waitresses here aren't known for their IQ and one of the challenges is matching what I ask for (I often modify what I see on menus to some degree) and what gets served. Now that places are used to me and I know most of the owners, it's rarely an issue now.

DM, lol re: hard to fuck up breakfast and "make sure they write it down and repeat it back"!

AMEN!

LOL - indeed.

It goes without saying, some people are a lot more picky about their food than others. I'm pretty picky and selective about many things when it comes to food. Many others aren't and that's perfectly fine. They may like Filipino beef @ bunny burger or Jolibees. Long as they like it, is all that matter to their palate.

That said, I'm trying to share some choices for those interested in a better dining experience, alternative choices they may not have tried but are still convenient, or think about dishes they may not have thought about otherwise or have had mixed luck with in the past.

Admin can you remove "Il bacio" and the filipino food thread (mis posted under there) or move porker's post under Italian?

Someone asked in another thread (paraphrasing), do you come to AC for the food?

Setting aside their sarcasm for those who may not have been to AC or been here in a while, OBVIOUSLY people don't come to AC for the food, they come for girls. Likewise, they don't come for a hotel, but there's plenty of nice pads here to stay.

In terms of food, context is everything. No, your not going to find world class dining, but I've rarely met anyone on CH that knows much about that topic. You will find plenty of places to eat that are generally pleasing and satisfying.

Service imho is more of a wild card and often the make or break in terms of one's experience. In the PI, this has been notoriously bad over the years for those expecting the same level of service in much of the Western World. It's improved a lot, but some places are far better than other, usually those with a hands-on owner. That said, it always serves one well to remember they aren't in the Western World and that patience (and repetition) goes a long ways to enjoying oneself.

Swiss Chalet? They usually serve good meat, better than most 3rd world venues.

Swiss C. They source from Homebase (owned by a pedo) - no different than many restaurants. Personally, I find the ambiance sucks, overpriced, and the menu offering okay, but not up to snuff with a couple other choices in terms of steak/meat. I'll cover that in a separate thread.

DM, What's the name of that place a couple doors down the street from after school that features ginger chicken, frappacinos and good salads. That place was pretty good.

Swiss Chalet meat kicks butt over the competition. So now there are 2 agendas (meat is murder, no Homebase) for his reviews...

Snooky, that's ginger cafe and the rib eye is excellent at a very competitive price, far better that Swiss Chalet imho in terms of value and taste.

Mr Tequila Reef and Margarita Sta speak out on his recommendation as well :-)
