Overview

While prostitution is technically legal, there are a number of restrictions which can make it difficult to work legally. Brothels and streetwalking are both illegal, but there are no prohibitions against a girl working solo from her home. More than one girl in an apartment is considered a brothel, however, and would be illegal.

There are a few co-ops in which a group of working girls gets together and rents an apartment, then they take turns working one day. This falls within the boundaries of the law.

The very cheapest ones work in the Soho and Chinatown areas. The front doors to the apartment buildings are left open, and people walking by are greeted by signs stuck to the walls saying things like "Friendly blonde busty model, second floor". Prices start at £20 (about US$34) for a quickie and go up. I walked up and knocked on a few doors to see what they were like, but most of them I wouldn't even have done for free, with one notable exception - see below.

The higher class girls mostly advertise by sticking cards to the insides of public phone booths. In many parts of the West End, the phone booths are often thoroughly plastered with 40 or more cards. Some of them have photos (rarely are they actually photos of the girls themselves) and many of them advertise specialities.

Uniforms are very common, and it seems that every girl has at least the basics - that being a) nurse and b) schoolgirl.
