Ok, I lived in the country for 6 years and didn't know about mongering until the last year I was there...what a shame. I worked there cause I got an opportunity to do so after college. Colombia is my #1 choice. Actually the fame that Colombia has of being dangerous makes tourism there scarce in the interior of the country which is a plus to a monger..good prices, good experiences, etc.
I have been to Costa Rica and I love it and it comes in a close second place...but Colombia, ahhh....

ADVICE:
I have 6 years experience there and I had to take precautions during a kidnapping wave of 90 people in one day in my city, and the Escobar reign of terror. I know how to handle myself there because of good business friends there that gave me good inside info and advice on how to go about my business there, so please take this advice:

Always stay in the city. Don't venture outside of the city at all. DONT ever go to small towns, only major cities!!! Do not accept invitations to "fincas" which are farms outside of the city, even if it is a close friend. For some reason, people in Colombia know the risks of leaving the city but they go ahead and do it anyways to visit their farm to retreat from the city and relax. I never understood this, but props to them, they got balls.

I read somewhere here in this thread that a chica invited a fellow monger to visit her in her town. Now there is a 99% chance that this is legit, but dont easily trust someone down there to take you to a small town where you know nobody. Just don't do it. Times have changed down there, I still talk to contacts that I have there and it is hard to tell what is legit and what isnt. If a chica asks you to go out partying, you are on your own. 99% it is legit, but there is always that risk that you can be taken somewhere to get robbed.
Dont get me wrong, the majority of people there are hard working and honest people just like me and you, and I have plenty of friends there. All I am saying is that you don't want to get hooked up with the wrong people. I have a keen sense for this because of my experience there, but if I were a tourist I wouldnt be able to sense danger..it all depends on where, who, what, how..hard to explain..its just a sense that I have. I even speak spanish in a Colombian accent because I couldnt speak English once for six years! If you need help or a tour down there, just say so (pay my ticket and hotel there hahah and I will gaurantee security and a good time )

Don't ever tell a taxi driver, or anyone you briefly meet where you are staying. If they ask, always have another hotel name in mind. This will throw anyone off, especially in smaller cities. If anyone has bad intentions, they wont know where to find ya. Dont ever take the same route every day. Catch a cab 2 blocks away from where you are staying and if possible call a cab to ensure that you get a legit cabbie.. DONT EVER TAKE A PIRATE TAXI...EVER! Don't wear jewelry. Don't give info out to strangers. As a matter of fact, dont talk to strangers on the street if they insist on talking to you, just keep walking or bail..you never know if this is a set up. Don't leave your drink in a bar unattended. Dont carry lots of money but DO CARRY MONEY, it is important, read why...

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE BEING MUGGED/ROBBED: Everytime you go out, have a bunch of small colombian bills wrapped up with a large bill around it ready in one pocket. If you are being robbed, DONT RESIST, give the roll immediately to the thief and comply. Usually he will run off. If you resist or if you HAVE NOTHING you might get hurt for carrying nothing since this will piss off the thief, so do carry something. Even better, have a cheap lame fake leather wallet ready with a bunch of small bills in one pocket and give it to the crook immediately, hopefully he will run off. You know what, avoid walking around anyways unless you are with a Colombian friend. In small cities, you as a foreigner stick out easily in a crowd!! EASILY spotted.

I have a rich friend that when he goes to take care of his businesses in Colombia, he makes reservations in 4 hotels so no one can actually know where he is. He stays in one hotel one night, and changes. This is an extreme case.

Generally the country can be safe regardless of what you see on the news, but you must be with someone that knows the ropes to ensure security.

As for our hobby, this place is #1. If they ever end the war there, oh man...party central!

PS: The city I was in is a small pleasant city with no tourists. I would like to disclose it, but a group of monger friends made me swear to keep it on the down low, and they are watching....I really dont care, but they asked me nicely not to say. Doesnt matter, what I just said applies to all cities in Colombia anyways, just go to any major city. Legit taxi drivers know all the apartments/houses with nice chicas.
Just dont let the taxi take you outside the city if he offers a place some miles out of the city.

It is very helpful advice that you posted.. For people who have not yet visited Colombia, you should not let it scare you away. The rewards to be found more than equal the risk, which can be GREALY minimized by following these reasonable precautions. I've actually gotten very similar advice when talking to locals in Colombia. About never accepting a drink from anyone, and never taking the suggestions of cab drivers. Try not to walk around too much at night. The police and security guards who are dressed like ninjas and carry machine guns are the very least of your worries. It is actually a comfort to be walking at night and seeing groups of uzi toting cops wearing ski masks. And get this, the cops even told me that they do not walk the bad parts of town alone, even fully armed. They say that the late night muggers can be in VERY large groups. I'm talking more than a dozen thugs. The meanest city streets are definately in Bogota. All of the other major cities are much more relaxed and scenic. I am hoping to make it to El Carnival de Barranquilla next feb. It is supposed to be much more wild than even the carnivals of Rio..

Do take the time to visit Colombia, and see for yourself the beautiful caleñas, paisas, bogotañas,
or las costeñas.. I've learned that in general pretty much all Colombian women really know how to treat a man, and I say this even in comparison to all of the women of other latin countries that I have visited.

I wish there was an easy way to pick up a Colombian accent, although I probably need to live there for as long as you had before it would rub of on me. I'm able to blend in ok, until people hear me talk..

It seems that the native Bogotaños have a strange accent that is slightly like a chilango for lack of a better description, but not really similar, although they don't cuss like people from DF. Anyone who has heard alot of chilangos knows they cuss more than anyone.

Yes those colombianas definately make me melt like butter, and myself being very young and nieve, It takes all of my willpower to resist I will definately try to keep contact with the ones that I really take an interest to.. Maybe If someday I get the urge to settle down... who knows?

How secure is property ownership in Colombia for americans? I have toyed with the idea of having my own little "hideaway" over there..


Another piece of advice, expecially when you're in Bogota.. Dont dont dont dont buy any emeralds on the street!!! more than 95% of them are fake!!
What they will often do, is steer you into buying a quantity of emeralds for a "special" discounted price, by giving you a few real ones mixed in with a whole mess of fake ones...

Buy from one of the licensed emerald dealers, but deal REALLY hard!! I was able to deal down all of the emeralds that I bought to around 30-40 percent of the "original" price, which seemd to be about the lowest you could possibly go.. I did this after doing plenty of research by talking to several emerald cutters and dealers for advice.

Any specific recommendations for places to go? Anything good in Cartegena?

Explorer: The apartment places in cities are underground establishments and change locations sometimes. You will have to read other trip reports or get with a guide/colombian friend and find them. In the city, any strip club will get you what you really want.
