I had just returned from my Montreal trip with Kick Stand and Seaman. I had a great time with them. I was on Instant Messenger with them and UWPhoto just laughing and talking about more adventures. There is not much information on the London scene. It’s probably because it’s so damn expensive. I was mainly going to see my girl but I knew I’d hobby too. In fact, I told her that I only had one day to spend with her then I had “business” to take care of. I asked Kick Stand who has been to the UK many times on business what he thought of the scene there. He said to stay away. I asked Sea Man who lived there a few years. He said basically the same thing and that he has never hobbied there. Everyone was telling me what I already knew…. That it would cost a lot.

I quickly discovered that London is a very expensive city. I couldn’t decide what hotel I’d stay in. There are so many choices. Most of the 4 and 5 star hotels are pricey. This Pounds” to US $ conversion sucks! Now I know how the Canadians feel with their worthless currency. The conversion rate of the Pound is worse than what the Canadians go through with the US $. Take any Pound price and multiply it by 1.60 to get the US equivalent. Most hotels that I’d stay in were quoting between $150 US to $300+ US a night. Ouch. And that was the weekend rate. During the week it was sometimes double that price.

I went on several websites and found a suitable choice in the Kensington area. The other alternatives would have been Knightsbridge. There are not any luxury hotels in the Soho area yet that I’m aware of. The Knightsbridge Hotel looks like a nice boutique hotel but is $250+ US a night.

A great option is the hotel I picked. It was The Copthorne Tara in Kensington. A modern “true” 4 star hotel. The normal rates are 160 pounds ($255 US) a night. Luckily with tourism being slow I got a rate of $150 US with tax per night. That might sound expensive but it’s actually a good rate for that area of London which was really posh.

Since I’ve never been to London I had to really research how I’d get to my hotel. All my friends told me to take the Express metro’s and to avoid taxi’s. Taxi’s are not only more expensive but it takes longer too. I was flying into Gatwick and not Heathrowe which is further out. You can take the Gatwick Express - http://www.gatwickexpress.co.uk to get into the city. Prices are a lot cheaper than taxi’s and they look nice. You can go first class for 17.50 pounds ($28 US) or regular 11 pounds($18). If you are flying into Heathrowe you can check out - http://www.heathrowexpress.co.uk/. Get on Train #1 headed to Victoria Station.

Once you arrive in London you’ll take the Metro system there or taxi’s. The “Tube” is very cheap. http://www.thetube.com/content/tubemap/ I was really impressed by the metro system there.


I did a ton of research before I went. I find out that generally Soho is not a good area because there are tons of scam artists there. However, I did keep hearing about a decent house in the West End called Blore House. http://www.lesgirls.co.uk/lghome.htm

The reason I’m describing it in detail is in case someone wants to take a trip to London it will give you exactly what you need to do.

My hotel was only one block from the stop where I got off. Great four-star hotel as described. I got lucky because the tourism seems to be suffering here. My room would have been 160 pounds ($255 US) a night but I got it for about $150 US a night with taxes. As I mentioned it’s a great hotel if you decide to come to London in a great part of town. The staff was all great and they have a full-service concierge.

One thing I noticed right away is there aren’t too many good looking girls in London. Everywhere you go most of the girls are ugly. There are very few head turners. You can walk around for hours without seeing any good looking girls. The ones that are good looking are either tourists or girls from other countries that are living here. Walking around I could hear a lot of girls speaking Spanish (from Spain), Italian, Russian and German.

My normal girl was near my hotel and came over to my hotel within hours of me checking in. I was a little nervous since I hadn’t seen her in person in a few years. She looked better than ever. I called the next morning really early. The first time predictably there was no answer at around 7 AM. I showered and was getting ready to head out. I decide to try DP one more time and he answers! I tell him thanks for everything and that he didn’t need to get up and meet me. He insisted and told me he would meet me at 8:30 AM. Wow…what a guy! We hit all the major tourist attractions: Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Thames River, Trafalgar Square, etc. I gotta tell you that London is one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the world. What the city lacks in beautiful women it makes up for with a charming atmosphere and beautiful architecture. The buildings were spectacular.

Hey fellas. Yeah, London is not a mongering destination. It's a world class city that every one should hit at least once. Like Dickjohnson pointed out...you can get a round-trip ticket from most major cities for very cheap. If you have the time and some extra money it is worth a visit. The people are very friendly there. Yes it is very expensive there but worth a visit.

Moondog is totally right about South America. Nothing can compare to South America. Those girls there are great. I've never had any problems with any girls in South America. Often times I've left money out just to see if they would take it and it's always there.

Great report as always, Godfather... Of course, not all cities are as cheap as TJ, BA, SP or Rio, or even Bankok and Manila in Asia -- or as more and more people are discovering now since they opened up -- Shanghai and Beijing. Yes, London, and Paris are expensive cities. On the other hand, Tokyo or even Tiny Taipei are also very expensive. Going out in Ginza, clubing and bar hoping sans the hobby is easily US$1,200. The middle range escorts in Taipei will run US$600 a pop. But if you are fan of asian beauty, you shouldn't miss Taipei; or if you are working on a budget, Shanghai then is a must see. GF... I think that those expensive phone calls are just part of a monger's box of negative experiences. I too, had a very expensive experience renting a phone from a very beautiful Carioca recommended by the hotel we were staying in once. Actually the foreigner element didn't really come into play. I didn't really see any girls I would even be interested in.
