The beach time in West Cuba was pretty damn cool. Our girls were having a blast and taking VERY good care of us, right Sandman?

Here’s some more shots of our first couple of days at the beach. I must admit that it was a great time, thanks in large part to the chemistry our girls shared with us.

When it was time to pack up and go, we made our way back to Havana and dropped off our girls before heading over to Cienfuegos. Once in Cienfuegos, we found some girls in spite of the crackdown that was going on in town that night. Over 50 girls were rounded up off the streets and sent to prison that night – two right in front of us! One of them was a friend who had agreed to come along for the ride with us, and it was really gut wrenching to watch her get escorted into the back of a police car and hauled off to jail. Her only crime? Being with tourists. I can handle a lot of things, but the thought that a girl would risk 3 years in a labor camp, cutting sugar cane with a machete, just to be with me…that’s wild. Fortunately I had her families’ home telephone number and I immediately called them to see if they could help. They thanked us for calling and said they’d work on fixing things first thing in the morning. We went to sleep that night with empty beds in our camper, with thoughts of the best wishes for our friend in prison.

The next morning we found the police station/prison and were told:
- we couldn’t see her or talk to her
- she might be there for days before they decided what to do with her, and
- most likely she would be shipped back to her hometown for sentencing

I was crushed, but knew that there was very little I could to change the situation. Leaving the police office, we decided to drive to a resort about 1 hour out of town just to ‘get away' from the police & fear of Cienfuegos. When we drove back into Cienfuegos and cellular range that afternoon, my cell phone had 8 voice messages! She was out of jail and waiting for us to pick her up!!! Apparently her family had been able to adequately explain why she was with us, and they let go. Whew… that was a relief. With kisses and hugs all around, we welcomed her back into our camper and made a beeline outta Cienfuegos.

HD is right. It was a gut wrenching night trying to figure out a game plan and how we were going to spring our amiga. The calls to Havana were our only source of solace. Seems our friend had contacts.

Next day when we went to the police station they wouldn't let us see her, talk to her, send her a hand written message or even deliver food we had brought her.

The reunion was all smiles, hugs and kisses. She knew we had hung in there for her and done everything possible. Funny thing was when we pulled up to pick her up, she was BS'ing with 5 policemen and they all had happy smiles on their faces.

During the day we had met a group of Mexicans at the resort. One was a Urologists and he had a 19 yr old babe and a half with him. His brother and a friend had been there for several days and were scoring quite well in Cien. along the Malecon.

We got her name and number and suggested we would meet that night. When we arrived in Cien. we called her and arranged to meet her at her house. She wasn't ready and had us wait down the dirt road for 10 minutes. HD is telling me what a lucky dog I am.

when she walks up to the RV she is very hesitant about going with us. Get this.... she says she is not sure about HD. Bastard has done it to me again. In reality, she doesn't want to be in such a high profile vehicle. No matter how much we try and coax, she isbn't buying the deal.

HD and friend go to the marina to park while Pepe and I stroll the Malecon for road kill.

The Malecon is DEAD...DEAD...DEAD. Police everywhere. We finally spy a couple of likely prospects and Pepe goes into his spiel. It almost worked but they did not want to go all the way back to our resort and we made plans for the next night. On our stroll back, Pepe and I spy a real cute mulatta sitting by herself. After a few minutes of discussion she is agreeable to joining us. He walks with her about 100 yards in advance of me and she peels off to a bus stop where we will pick her up. (Ok for her to walk with a Cubano but not with a tourist)

We get back to the marina, stop for air in one tire, she jumps in the back and we are off to our resort. Just like the song..."Oh what a night...late Dec. back in 63...what a very special time for me....

next day, HD and I get a privado spearfishing dive. Even though we only got a couple of fish and bugs (langostino) it was a hell of a lot of fun. We got back to the pool where our girls were and played for a while then back to our camper for a little "Afternoon delight"

The crackdown may last a while, but the general feeling is that things will lighten up by May. I may run down again for a long weekend sometime in April, and hope to spend some serious time in Cuba this May if the situation improves.

One detail I omitted from the report? The cops saw our friend INSIDE our camper, and yanked her out of it. That has never happened to me in 8 trips. I was REALLY pissed off about that.

"Why did this happen?" I asked. It had always been my understanding that the car was a 'safe zone'. Now the friggin cops feel free to yank a friend right outta my car???

After a lot of debate, my cuban buddy and I agreed on the following explanations:

The girl had changed into her disco clothes, which means she looked as slutty as could be, and she was sitting up front + the cops were on a citywide bust that night. Still, that gave him no excuse for pulling her out of the car.

We were on a narrow street, and trying to back out of the disco parking lot after learning it had just closed, so the cop might've thought we just picked her up. Still not an excuse, but another reason.

Our vehicle was 'high-profile', and attracted a lot of attention, plus we may have had an interior light on which as much as ADVERTISED who we had in the car with us. Not smart on our part.

As for the whole jail term thing - it's a tough gig for all cubans right now. Essentially the economics of living there means you either try to survive on $10/month state wage or you risk bending/breaking the rules to get ahead and do things like eat 30 days a month. The girls know the risks they take, and make a personal choice whether to do it or not. All we can do is try to minimize their exposure and risk.

Thanks for the follow up post HD. I'll probably miss you in Rio. I'm flying out late late Sunday night but I'll probably be sleeping until noon so I'll miss you at Alcazar.

Wow. Sounds like we like some of the same places. Lake Louis, Canada and Banff is one of my favorite spots on Earth. It's so nice up there. I used to go skiing up there quite a bit. Not sure where you are staying but Chateau Lake Louis and The Post Hotel are two excellent choices if you want to stay in style.
