2003/04 Wallstreet - Still Bullish on Bangkok

Introduction

This was my second trip to Thailand, the first having been back in November. Between the war in Iraq and SARS, a lot of people were telling me if it was them, they wouldn't go. I told them if the war spilled over into Thailand and they pinpointed the SARS outbreak to Bangkok, I was still going. Foolish bravado? No. Simply, no one fucks with my vacation. My motto is work hard and play harder. I did the work part. I was ready to play very hard.

Getting there

I once again chose to fly EVA deluxe class. Love their schedule, with the flight leaving Friday night at 11:15pm from Newark. I packed up my golf clubs, carry-on bag and one rather large bag that contained basically two changes of clothes and socks, underwear and toiletries. I intended to put in a big order at the tailor I used last trip - no sense bringing over clothes. I finished up work at 9:00pm and jumped in the car waiting outside - was in Newark Airport by 9:30. I had my seat assignment already, no need to get there too early. Only difference from last trip was I had them credit the miles to my Continental OnePass instead of EVA's Evergreen Club (thanks Merlin) Between this trip and the miles I earn with IDINE.com I'll easily have the 50,000 miles needed for a business class upgrade for my December 2003 trip (but I'm getting ahead of myself). As I boarded the plane, I had a definite in-flight gameplan. Eat, read and watch movies until we hit Seattle, then down a couple of sleeping pills and sleep my way to Taipei. Worked like a charm - managed a full 8 hours of sleep. Good thing because I had reserved 2 Eden girls for overnight takeout on my first day. Plane change in Taipei no problem and three hours later I'm in Bangkok with a huge smile on my face. And so the story begins.
