I had put off going to Brazil for the longest time. I was focused on spanish speaking countries in south and central America to keep improving my spanish. And there were plenty of good options there. There was no quarantine on the Brazil side. At GRU customs they just did a passport check and took a photo with my mask lowered. Stated purpose was vacation. They did not ask for any test, insurance or even where I was staying. Eazy breezy took 3 minutes.

I was in no rush so walked around the airport to check it out and get some breakfast. There was free wifi and big signs for Uber. No place to buy a SIM card. One thing I noticed different, you can buy a Heineken with your pizza at the Pizza Hut.

Took a taxi from the airport to my hotel for $30 US or 163 BRL. Gave 200 BRL total with tip.

I stayed at the Grand Hyatt in Itaim Bibi. Great 4-star hotel. I got it for around 100-120 US a night, it seemed a lot of the hotels had good deals. It had two pools (indoor and outdoor), a spacious restaurant and an upscale spa.

The hotel spa is called Amanary Spa. I was curious if the spa might discretely attend to business travelers as I had experienced a few times in other countries. But it turned out the spa was strictly legit and professional. I did have two excellent massages with two different female therapists. I remained covered at all times and they wore face masks. 1 hour was 270 BRL or $50 US which is a great deal for an upscale hotel spa like this. The second massage was 1.5 h for 320 BRL or only $60 US !

Tell me about this tacked on 15% exchange rate? I've was always been told Visa/MC is the one handling the exchange rate and never the local bank. Here's a photo of the ATM with the exchange rate and fee. I got the same ATM screen both at the airport and at my hotel. I wasn't going to run around town to see if I could avoid it. But it probably cost me near $400 US on 2K of ATM withdrawals. It sucked but I was still getting great deals on the chicas. If there is an easy way to get a better deal on the currency exchange I'd love to know.

Today I tried another clinica on my list, Clinica Reserva Lux. Taxi was 50. The place was clean and somewhere between basic and upscale. So with the ATM, these are greedy programs called Dynamic conversions, which ask you it can convert in your home currency which is USD for you (The machine can pick up where the card is from USD, CAD, EUR). It still the same thing, but it tricks you into thinking they can offer you a USD amount upfront on the spot.

To sum up the ATM, yes you should be able to avoid the conversion hustle. The ATM will ask you about a conversion and you always want to decline. I think the decline option is always on your left when asked on the screen. Just try and remember you always want to only see BRL only, avoid seeing anything in USD. You should be able to decline the conversion and still be able to process the transaction. All this is just to confuse the tourist. If there is nothing on the screen that will let you pull out a flat $R1500, then pull your card out and look for a big bank.

These ATM dynamic conversion programs are big in Europe, geared around the tourist areas. I was in SP a long time ago and I just have the taxi driver pull over at Citibank on Paulista Ave. I think Citi, HSBC and Bradesco only worked at that time.
