Spent a week in Punta del Este and 5 days in Montevideo over New Year's (2001-02). I'll be damned if I could find any action in Punta, other than the reputed bordellos of Maldonado, which I failed to visit. Punta is like a Latin-American dream world: no poor, no shanties, only the rich and their servants. In Montevideo, on the other hand, there's much to choose from: 1) the internet option: check out the girls listed as escorts on the website of "Montevideo sexy"--an hour runs about $35 (I had a very pleasant time with a sweet girl named Lucia)
2) go to Pykaros, a "boliche" (stripjoint) on Convencion 1260, where you will have a choice of about 15 generally quite attractive chicas, whose prices range--after you've bought a drink for yourself and for her (=$12 total)--from $35 to $80, the amount of time depending on your ability to negotiate.
3) go to one of the massage parlors, where you will be treated to a very scientific breakdown of options, e.g.: "one vaginal penetration, 15 min. = $7";"one vaginal penetration & one oral penetration, 30min. = $14"; "extras: pecks on the mouth = $2, deep kissing = $4", you get the idea. The girls are sometimes quite a bit more enthusiastic than you might think given this highly segmented approach to sex. I particularly liked the chicas in Aqualarre, Colonia 927, apt.506.--just hit the apt. # and get buzzed in.
4) if you read Spanish, get ahold of a copy of the Sunday edition of "El Pais" which is the only edition carrying classifieds. Look under "Servicios/Mensajes Especiales," you will find about a hundred listings. This is obviously hit or miss, and I didn't give it a go for the many independent providers--I only used it to find out the addresses and telephone numbers of the massage parlors.
Stayed at the Holiday Inn on Colonia downtown--no problem bringing in companions--$70/night.
Best place to eat: the "Mercado del Puerto" (try "La Pradera" and the superlative empanada joint, Carolina) only till 5:30pm--filet brochette = $7.

Reminds me of a trailer for a spanish language (Mexican) film that I saw on a videotape rental sometime back. The actress asks a policeman if he is interested in mordida. She then proceeds to bite him. Without the knowledge that mordida is common slang or idiom for a bribe, it is not half as funny. Otherwise, it would just leave the viewer wondering why the hell she would ask the cop if he wanted a bite.

coger is another word with very different meanings depending upon context and where you are in Latin America.
