Introduction
This was my second trip in as many months to San Jose. The inexpensive and short flight from Newark along with the three-day weekend created by the 4th of July made this trip a no-brainer. I was going to try a few different things this time as opposed to the last trip, which was little more than one long sex and gambling marathon (not that there’s anything wrong with that).
Getting there
Once again I took the late non-stop from Newark which set me back $394 round-trip. It was also scheduled to leave a little later than last time, at 5:40pm. I had reserved a car to take me to the airport at 3:00pm. At 2:45pm, the car service called and said they had no cars available. I grabbed my overnight bag and went down to the subway, took the 1 train up to Penn Station and caught the 3:22 train making the Newark Airport stop. This is not the train you want to be on at prime get-out-of-the-city time on the cusp of a three-day-weekend. I was crushed along with 20 other passengers in the outer compartment for the twenty-minute trip to the airport. Thank God I didn’t take my golf clubs with me. From there on in it was a breeze. I was checked in, past security and drinking a margarita in the President’s Club before 4:00pm. I had a nice buzz going by the time I left the Club and headed to the gate at 5:30. The line was still long; I should have stayed for another drink. When I was seated, they announced they were looking for 4 volunteers to get off the plane and take tomorrow’s flight – and for that they would give you a $600 travel credit voucher. I seriously thought about it, but I would be re-routed through Houston and wouldn’t arrive until Friday night. Still, it was tempting. Take-off was delayed for an hour so we didn’t land until 9:20pm local time. With no checked bags, I breezed through customs and immigration and was in a cab literally 10 minutes after I stepped off the plane. And so the story begins.
