I cleared customs in about an hour. My visa and passport were processed quickly, but it seems like everyone ahead of me was really slow. It pays to rush out of the plane to get to the front of the line here. Then I claimed my bags, and filled out a customs form. You have to declare all cash you bring in to the country, otherwise you must empty your wallet on departure. I went through the red lane - something to declare - and the customs clerk xrayed my bags. She then proceeded to have me show all of the money and she counted it all. Once she saw that I had reported accurately, she wrote a bunch of notes on the form and stamped then handed it back.
Next I had to deal with the taxi mafia. There are about 50 guys in black leather jackets standing in a mob just outside of customs. I dodge through them and about 4 followed me across the terminal. I wanted to go change money. The first place I went to was closed for lunch. The second sent me to an empty window. Eventually a woman showed up and scowled at me. I handed her a hundred dollars and got ripped off with a 28.50 exchange rate (in the city I've been getting 31.00 or 31.05).
There are no shuttle bus service. I eventually got taken to a taxi and charged 1500 rubles (about $50) to my hotel. The guy said it was an hour drive, but turned out to be only about 25 minutes.
I checked into the hotel. They asked me about my double occupancy booking and I said that my friend may join me later. They said no problem. I guess that there may be a 5% tax per occupant on top of the aggregious 20% tax on the room. Most hotels have different rates for one or two occupants. This one was the same which was why I booked it.
The room was large with a king size bed, couch, desk, and a small bathroom with shower. I got cleaned up and went out to check the action.
First I wanted to find a good exchange rate. I got a business card from the hotel desk with the address in cyrillic so that I could find my way back to the hotel. I then went to hail a cab.
I think every cab in Moscow is at the airport, because it is hard to find one in the city. Plenty of private cars will stop. Since the taxis aren't metered and I was getting ripped off my first few rides, I gave up trying to find licensed cabs and started using the pirate taxis (as long as I was the one who flagged them down).
I walked around downtown and changed money. After killing a few hours with siteseeing and watching the pretty girls on the street, I decided to head to Doug and Marty's Boar House (formerly Chesterfields). The first four taxis I found could not read the translittered addresses I had -- only cyrillic. I finally found one and we took off. The cars seem to have right of way in Moscow ... most main streets have underground passes instead of cross walks. Most people take the metro subway, so traffic has not been too bad. Also, the first week of May is really a holiday time anyway.
Weather has been good so far ... mid 60s and sunny. Night lows are about 40.
I got to Doug and Marty's about 6PM and it was dead. I was the first customer. I had heard that it was a big hangout for expats.
