Safety Concerns
The water is safe to drink in Buenos Aires. There are no special inoculations necessary to immunize you against exotic diseases. And the crime rate is lower than in most U.S. cities. Really!
Even so, I take a few precautions.
To be on the safe side, I drink bottled water.
I don't walk alone at night. In fact, I usually take a taxi. Fares are very inexpensive. 1.24pesos to start. Most rides are less than 5 pesos.
I use only Radio Taxis. Radio taxis are easy to recognize. They have "Radio Taxi" printed on the sides and a light on top that says, you guessed it, "Radio Taxi."
When I exchange money I don't grab a cab in front of the cambio or bank. Instead, I walk a block or two, then catch a taxi.
Also, I don't wear expensive jewelry or Tshirts that say "Rich Gringo. Rob me."
I am wary of pickpockets, so I don't carry a billfold in my back pocket.
And I have never been molested. Never. And I can't say the same for my experiences in New York.
Read what the CDC and U.S. Department of State have to say:
