BASIC:
First I can speak some spanish. Rented a room thru www.casaparticular.com I requested the apt Hotel Libre. (Nice 1BR, pvt ent pvt bath 2nd floor on corner of LaRampa and Calle L - directly across from Hotel Libre and chica friendly and stocked fridge) When I arrived I was told that the guy that was there would be staying for another night, so the first night stayed in the apt across the hall. I was quoted 25 on the net, but ended up paying 30.00 Stayed from Wed thru Sat. I made mistake number 1 at HAV airport when a cute Cubana ask if I wanted the VIP service for 20 dollars. She helped me fill out my forms and walked me thru Aduanas without any problems ....

As far as crackdowns go, there are policia on every corner but never stopped me when I was walking hand in hand with a chica. The discos are basically off limits to unescorted chicas. For what it is worth, that $20 you spent on VIP service on the way into Cuba might well have saved you an hour or more of hassles with Cuban Customs, during which you had to explain why you had so many gifts, then pay a 'tax' and etc... It's been my experience that I don't get searched when the VIP attendent escorts me through customs. Without VIP, I was averaging 1 hour delays for searches about 40% of the time.
