This is my second trip to Brazil and definitely not the last. My first trip was in September 2003 when I was given a free timeshare/resort for a week in Fortaleza and stayed in Rio on the front end and the back end of the trip. Fortaleza was a bust, nice beaches but too hot, right on the equator and the girls were not to my liking plus got screwed over by a rental car company. The Rio part was fantastic and I had to go back for a second helping 1/13/04 through 1/21/04.

I took the United direct flight from DC to Rio which isn’t exactly a direct flight when you have to sit in the Sao Paulo airport for 3 hours before continuing on to Rio. My report is pretty graphic as I like to relive the events in full detail. If you aren’t into it then please just skip this post and save any comments about it for someone who cares what you think. Also, when I’m talking money I’m always expressing it in Reals unless I specifically put in USD after the amount.

Day one Tuesday:

Arrived into Rio about 1:30, in my apartment by 2:30, shit, showered and shaved and was on the prowl by 3:30. Decided to grab a bite to eat at my favorite churrascaria by the kilo place called the Sigueira Grill on Sigueira Compos and Atlantica.. Now for dessert I decided to go to L’uomo (1 hour, $130 for the girl, $70 for the room, $30 entrance + drinks). Get in there and there are about 30 women and about 10 guys in the place. Day Seven Monday:

Got a guided tour of all the local beaches where not too many gringos go, mainly surfing beaches. We went to this gem store in Barra, huge place that sold everything at about 1/10th the price of the exact same thing that H. Stern sells. You name it they have it. Hundreds of Amethyst geodes in all different sizes some 6 foot tall and over 300 kilos.
Then back to the apartment.

I can’t get in touch with running buddy so I head off to L’uomo. I finally ran into one of the guys I was playing phone tag with all week there. Great guy and a long time Rio visitor who knows everyone in most of the termas and bars. I hooked up with my blonde with braces again. Observations:

Packing: For 9 days, I came here with 8 pairs of slacks, 4 pairs of shorts 2 pairs of jeans, 7 dress shirts, 7 polo shirts, 3 tank tops, 4 t-shirts, 1 jacket and 2 bathing suits in the biggest Samsonite suitcase they make. I only wore the shorts and one pair of jeans (just to get into Help, they don’t allow shorts), a pair of slacks for the flight back and tank tops, t-shirts and polo shirts for the hole trip. Next time I can probably use my carryon suitcase and use the local cleaners if I run out. Always pack a small umbrella, a swiss army knife with all the tools and plenty of pens.

Money: I brought $2,300 USD cash with me, (apartment was prepaid). I did everything I wanted, ate and drank like a maniac. I bought gifts for 20 people and souvenirs for myself and still went home with over $1,000USD. Best exchange rates seem to be in the termas and Help. Most cambios were giving 2.75 and the termas were giving 2.8 and Help was giving 2.83 although none would cash more than $100USD at a shot.

Protection: Bring your own condoms and lube. The girls have condoms but they are very thick and most of the time too small.

Security: I had heard a lot about not wearing jewelry and stuff. I felt just as safe there as anywhere in the US. Just like at home be aware of your surroundings and don’t go anywhere that is considered dangerous like God City.

Gifts: I always bring gifts for the girls. My favorites are Victoria Secret thong panties, usually on sale for 5 for $20USD. They like them and then they look good posing for you. A little generosity goes a long way and they always remember you for it. My running buddy always brings gum, good icebreaker and may kill bad breath too 

People: I met a lot of people while there locals and mongers. Everyone is really friendly and willing to help in any way possible. It’s like the old saying, treat people as you would like to be treated and you will rarely be disappointed

I have a couple of questions. If you remember how much did you pay for your cell phone and what kind of plan did you get? What were the prices that they were quoting at Barberella?

I've never heard of dude paying those prices at Help - did anyone in your group speak portuguese (well enough to make them laught a little during a negotiation)?

Help girls will always (few exceptions of course) take R150-250 unless one fits the American stereotype, in which case they're trying to tell someone 'no'.

I agree with FlHobbyer. No offense to you and maybe this wasn't the case but lots of girls at Help will throw out some ridiculous price if they don't want to leave with you. Damn, that had to weigh a ton or so. How did you carry it all around? Snooky, in the opposite extreme there is a guy on this board who listed what he took to Rio a while back. Everything was electronics so I guess he went with the clothes on his back. His traveling kit sounding like a mobile Circuit City while your's sounded like one from Target or Mervins.

That's funny. I typically bring tons more clothes than that even. Some of my amigos laugh at my big ass suitcase. I usually end up extending my trips so the extra clothes helps. Also, with the weather there much of the year I'm changing 2-3 times a day.

The last few trips though I packed light and just brought an extra bag. I ended up filling it up with clothes that I bought at Rio Sul. They have really good clothes there and not expensive compared to US prices.

Just a little more on the prices at Help. When I was there last week the garotas that I had contact with were in the 200-300R range, for the night.
Thsi was my first trip.....how can you not love that town?

Prices at Help...there are a few stunning foxes there frequently who ask big bucks and will not budge. One told me 450R for 2 hours, another said 400R one hour, 600R two, 1000R all night. They are just beautiful and don't last long, guys pay it. In March I left with 5 Help girls. All asked 300, I paid 4 200 and 1 150. All very attractive.

A really good negotiating tactic is to make your final offer (or close to it) and if the garota still won't budge, make a sad face and then ask her for her mobile or home telephone number so you can call them tomorrow. At that point, they'll know you won't meet their price and will almost always either agree to your price or fairly close.

Of course, all negotiations are easier the later it gets in the morning, but if you wait too long you may be more ready for sleep than sex by then. My opinion - go for a 2:00 A.M. or so target for departure. Not much is going to come inside later than that, so if you haven't found one by then, or can't get the one(s) you want to match your price, retreat to Terraco and set up camp there.

Great advice Catocony, I have been saying for years that the 200US asking garota, will be happy to come to your apartment the next afternoon for only 200R.

Actually, I've seen a lot of garotas arrive late. There have been times I've seen Help fill up between 2 and 3 AM (usually on weekends), and a few times when I've not found anyone I liked (and could get for R$200 or R$250) until 3:30 or 4--sometimes the late arrivals are hot. Of course, that means less beach time the next day.

Cat, sounds like good advice on tactics, I'll be trying it soon. But there are some of the high-priced ones that I just KNOW I wouldn't want the next day, even for R$150 (I just have that feeling--after a few expensive mistakes).

Clarification - You don't ask for the number so you can actually call them, it's just a negotiating tactic. Like at the car dealership when you say "I'll have to sleep on it. I'll be back in the morning". The car dealer will try and do whatever it takes to keep you on the lot, and in Help the garota will do whatever to keep you on the hook. So, similar to when the car dealer goes to "talk to the manager", after you ask for her number, she'll almost always reply with either "okay" to your offer, or will at least make a counteroffer of her own.

Also, try *not* to succomb to late-night desparation...
