Buenos Aires Back to Eden


After a six month hiatus I have returned to BA. My trip was via American Airlines nonstop from DFW. The fare was courtesy of frequent flier miles. The two empty seats next to me made for a good nights sleep as we flew over the western side of the Andes in absolutely perfect weather. The morning breakfast was followed by a journey through a storm that followed us to the airport and remained in BA all day. The steady and often downpour had traffic in a mess. My remis driver was great even though an errant driver almost took his side mirror off.
The private apartment arranged through Mayra (mayrabrill@argentina.com) (that is a new email address as she is now independent and no longer with Argentinago) is beautiful. It is on the fifteenth floor of a very new building on Callao Ave. That translates to a five peso cab ride to Orleans Café or a five peso cab ride to Recoleta Village (including a nice tip). A huge white sofa and easy chair make the living room quite striking. The mirrored wall beside the dining room table appears to double the size of the already spacious room. The queen size bed is firm which I love. The closets are more than adequate. A television in the living room and a second in the bedroom are both connected to the cable system with several English channels to include CNN and BBC.
A trip around the block and 70 pesos later I had three bottles of Chandon champagne, chocolates, paper supplies for the kitchen and bath, bottled water and sodas. I did manage to get fairly soaked on my brief shopping excursion. The hot shower did feel good.
In my four previous sojourns in BA my residence had always been Art Suites. I would still recommend it to anyone headed this way. However, the private apartment is bigger, cheaper, without tax, and more luxurious than any hotel. This apartment includes daily maid service, 24 hour doorman, fitness facility, and a view of the river from the room. The only draw back is the need to cab it to downtown or Recoleta. From Art Suites it is an easy walk to Recoleta.
Before leaving on this trip I had arranged with Roxana for room service on the afternoon of my arrival. Promptly at three Libia rang from the entrance to the apartment complex. Apparently, all guests have to call the apartment before the doorman will allow entry. She is much better looking in person than the great photos on the net would lead you to believe. Her English is fantastic and her vocabulary would put a few Americans to shame. After some champagne and getting caught up on what has happened since we were last together in October we headed to the bedroom. Oh, she has bought an apartment (paid cash), continues to work at Black´s, and is amazed at the money men spend there. In the bed Libia is a consummate lover with careful oral attention to those parts we mongers love oral attention. She does enjoy DATY and will return the favors in kind. Multiple positions and this old monger was smiling from ear to ear. I paid her the agreed upon 150 pesos plus 50 pesos for traveling in the rain and as a tip. That is a great deal less than she and the other women command at Black´s. Departing she had two requests. One, that I call her again before leaving, and second that I ride with her done the elevator. It seems she has a fear of elevators.
My efforts to take a nap were rudely interrupted by the delivery of my cell phone. The gentleman had left a card while I was shopping for champagne and other necessaries and returned while I was in deep sleep. However, I did get my rent free phone and instructions on its care, use and charges. No phone card but a settling on minutes used upon returning the instrument.
Friday night the rain was still coming down, my nap did not end until almost midnight. I considered getting dressed and touring the clubs, but good sense threw me back in bed for a much needed night of rest. The pitter patter of the falling rain put me to sleep in a matter of seconds.
Saturday morning dawned with clear blue skies, warm temperatures and the urge to reacquaint myself with the downtown section. It is nice to walk along wide sidewalks without having to dodge beggars, kids, and other vermin. Once again I am awe struck by the cleanliness of BA, the friendliness of the people, and feeling of being in Europe with all the pluses of being in a Latin country.
I plan to check out the eye candy at Orleans Café this afternoon. However, being a Satruday I seriously doubt if the numbers or quantity will be that significant. I am sure the steak sandwich will be wonderful.
