MONGERING IN TEPIC
I wish I could tell you guys that I found Tepic, Nayarit a great place to monger. Unfortunately, that was not the case. My guide book says Tepic has a population of 270K, but I suspect that it is much larger than that. Despite the size of this city I found only three TD clubs and I did not find any massage parlors listed in the phone book or local newspaper. I did not talk to any taxi drivers. I think that was a mistake. Later, in Mazatlan I found the taxi (or pulmonia) drivers to be my best source of information regarding putas.
LIBRAMIENTO 100
A number of people (including the guy at the official tourist booth downtown) tried to give me directions to this club. I guess I drove right by it about half a dozen times looking for it without success. Finally, I gave in and hired a taxi and he took me right to it. The reason I couldn't find it is because it has no sign on the highway. It only has the number "100" posted at the entrance. This TD club is on the periferico (by-pass) that takes you to Guadalajara.
I believe the cover charge was $25 pesos. Cerveza about $20 pesos. It is a nice enough looking club (even has nice looking grounds and a swimming pool outside) but it was very slow on the Sunday night I was there. Possibly, I just visited on the wrong day of the week? There were a lot of American looking chicas hanging around. By this I mean they were blonde, light skinned, young and thin. This is not the body type I like. (I prefer the aggressive morena chichonas). In addition, they were not very friendly. They never approached me in the hour I was there. I just sat and watched the dancers, people watched and sipped my beer.
A young Mexican sitting next to me struck up a conversation with me in English. He said his name was "Nick" and he was recently deported from the U.S. after spending a couple of years in an Oregon prison for drug offenses. He was a friendly enough guy so I bought him a beer and talked with him for awhile before I left for the next club because I was just plain bored!
JUNIOR'S
I don't know this TD club's exact address, but it is on the main east-west road through town, Mexico 15. It is near the extreme west side of town where you enter from Mazatlan. I believe it is part of a chain of "clip joints" because I found a club of the same name in Guadalajara. Similar to the club in GDL, this place always charges a cover charge ($30 pesos) ----even on a Sunday night, when there are only a couple of customers. This was the case when I visited. Everything was overpriced. The beer was about $20 pesos. The table dances about $100 pesos. If I wanted to pay those prices I would have stayed in Arizona! The chicas were friendly, but nothing special to look at. I left before I found out what a privado costs.
EL LIDER
This was the last club I visited. I found it on my walk back to my hotel along Mexico Highway 15. Again, it is on the extreme west side of Tepic and only a few blocks west of Juniors. I was waved through the door without paying a cover charge on the Sunday night I was there. Inside I found a bunch of rowdy, loud Mexican laborers who seemed to be having a hell-of a good time! It took a while to get a beer. It was a Coronita (you know, the really small, half size, little bottles) and they charged $10 pesos. That's about $5 pesos too much I believe. The club was very dark and I started getting the feeling that it was not exactly the safest place for a lone Gringo to be.
No one ever hassled me, and I didn't see any weapons or fighting but I just got "that feeling" and I am a strong believer in keeping in touch with one's feelings. Besides, none of the chicas really appealed to me. Most appeared to be older, heavier and more well worn than I like. I left for my hotel after drinking the one Coronita. Never found out the cost of a TD or privado.
