By the time the plane from Bangkok touched down in Singapore, it was well after dusk. The Garuda officials herded me and a dozen others to our baggage and to a waiting bus. My first impression of Singapore was a clean, well designed, tree lined highway. In the hotel I dumped my bags and headed downstairs for a free meal, courtesy of Garuda. Pepper crab, I’m sorry to say, was not on the menu.
It was getting late, but not too late to make my way to Singapore’s infamous “Four Floors of Whores,” Orchard Towers. I had no idea where this was, other than it was on Orchard Road. I foolishly decided to go on foot. It was not the distance, or my lack of direction that slowed me down, but the staggering humidity. I was so wet I had to take off my shirt in an effort to cool down.
At midnight, I decided to hail a cab. It turned out that I was not all that far from the tower. I entered the place through the back and made my way into the first dark and dirty club. The place had a worn out, run down look to it. It was dark and loud, a combination I loathe in clubs. I took the elevator up a few floors to see if things improved the higher I went. It wasn’t much of an improvement, but the clubs were a little more interesting. One large club, in particular, was quite nice. They had a good live band.
I checked out more bars just to get a feel for what was available. I can’t say I was particularly impressed with the female talent I saw. I guess it was a mix of Malays, Chinese, Indonesians and Thai, but I’m not good enough to tell the difference between the various breeds. What I didn’t find are any cute young things looking for company. There were mostly older girls or rather unappealing ladies. Oh, and way too many transvestites. I called it a night, taxied back to the hotel and watched TV until much too late.
In the morning, I went electronics price shopping. I visited a few computer and electronics mall, but I was unimpressed with the prices offered. Furthermore, I was unimpressed with the womenfolk of Singapore. I had heard that there were stunning babes walking in and out of the Orchard Road boutiques. I saw a lot of old broads, the Chinese equivalent of Manhattan socialites, but nothing that came close to the office girls of Bangkok.
When the bus arrived to take me to the airport, I was happy to leave.
Next stop, Bali!
