This trip has really made me question how GFE is defined. The way I hit it off with Tatiana blew me away and led me to question what I previously defined as GFE experiences on my five trips to Thailand. Was I with the wrong girls in Thailand? Sure didn’t seem so at the time.
Are all pro-Colombianas like Tatiana? Probably not, but in reading other reports, it seems like she’s more the rule than the exception.
And as for the city, to me, Medellin was very easy to figure out. Stay in the good areas, take taxis and you’ll be ok. I can’t stop raving about the food and the friendliness of the people. The weather: spectacular! Add to that my sessions were stellar, and I’m surprised I’m waiting until Labor Day to go back. In September I’ll be taking a Continental flight from Newark to Miami for $254 and then Avianca from Miami to Medellin for $360, so $600 total. Gets in at a very nice 6:10pm and departure isn’t until 10am, so I won’t have to wake up at 4am like on the first trip.
Speaking of taxis, I highly recommend the following:
Luis 310-500-2144 (he only works at night and charges 15,000 per hour, limited English)
Luis knows all the addresses and went out of his way to make me happy.
Javier is more of a day-time guy, though I think he would make himself available with notice. He speaks perfect English and only charged what was on the meter. First Class guy.
Also, these are three of the malls that I kept reading were great to people-watch in. I never made it to Oveido, but really enjoyed Tesoro. And San Diego Mall is where I bought my cell phone.
Centro Comercial Oveido Mall (Poblado)
Centro Comercial Tesoro
Centro Comercial San Diego Mall
Cell phone receipt: (I highly recommend this place CMV Cellular – no runaround, they’ll handle all the paperwork and there were no hidden costs. Didn’t take AMEX, put it on my Visa.
In the meantime, I don’t want the research I did go to waste. I searched far and wide to come up with P4P options in Medellin and although I only went to Face Dos and Loutron, the following is a summary of my notes for other venues.
Strip Clubs
I only went to Face Dos, but repeatedly Disco Grill San Diego and La Isla came up on other sites. In fact when I got in the taxi the first night, I said Face Dos or La Isla, and by luck went to Face Dos. Luis, the taxi driver said La Isla was also really good – take that at face value.
Face Dos

I paid 300k for all night, read another report where I guy took out two girls, paid 200k for the exit fee and 300k total for both girls for 3 hours. I also read you can do short time next door – 140,000 for 30 minutes.
La Isla
Km. Via Las Palmas (Antigua Britania)
Tel. 228-0149
You can take girls off premises or have your fun on-site. For on-site, 100k for 1 hour plus 70k to the house.

Same owner as Loutron, but less expensive, starts at 60,000P for 60 minutes

Again, same owner as Loutron, but lower-priced option

WS, shhhhh!
Hey, great detail info posts - thanks!
By Bkkguru on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 03:26 pm: Edit |
WS:
Thanks for taking the time to write this report.
I wish all reports were as detailed and informative as yours.
You report will also help the people of Colombia since it dispels commonly accepted security, crime and tourist myths. More people will now visit Colombia. This will help the Colombian economy and enhance employment in the service industry.
Your trip report has given me (and I am sure other Hombres) the confidence to visit Colombia in the not too distant future.

WS, Great report all around. You could get a second job as a travel writer. LOL. BTW, is "drugs" legal for small quantities(personal use)?
By Wallstreet on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 04:42 pm: Edit |
Thanks for the compliments guys!
Bkkguru,
Except for the ride in from the airport (which was self-generated paranoia) I absolutely never felt threatened or saw anything other than civil behaviour. Not at all what I expected, even though I was pretty sure it wasn't going to be that bad.
Like any city, just stay out of the places you don't belong. Colombia has a lot to offer!
Slug93,
I really should research this more, but I read in two different places that for personal use in Colombia, you can have 20 grams of marijuana or 1 gram of the following: cocaine, heroin, opium.
I don't know how the law works governing the transaction, but I can tell you on Friday night at Mango's the table next to us was passing coke around the table and snorting it in plain view.
I would never do something like that anywhere, but no one batted an eyelash.

WS,
Thanks for sharing your trip with us. Long term friendships can be very rewarding as you found out, and thanks for the additional information.

I really think more guys need to visit Colombia. The notion that you're gonna get shot is really overblown. In my humble opinion anyway. I only spent one 10 night trip there but I really found the people the friendliest in the world, the girls the hottest and as long as you're not being an idiot you should be fine.
Really excellent report. Thanks

I only partly agree with GF. First, it is for the more adventurist traveler - you might go days without seeing an English speaking person, and seeing thing familiar to your home country (stores, restaurants, hotels, etc.) - if you like these types of comforts (versus wishing to avoid them) you won't like Colombia so much.
Next, other than may Cartegena, (I haven't been so I can't offer an opinion) if you don't speak Spanish, Colombia may not be the best choice - it's not bad, but maybe BA or Rio offer better options. And combined with the previous point, CR may offer you a better option.
Next, there is a type of monger that finds places like DR and CR perfect for their interests, while others would not enjoy DR or CR at all. I would put places like Cali (and likely Medellin, which I can't say since I haven't been) in a group that would not provide the best fit for this type.
I love Colombia - but I can't say it's the place that offers a match for everyone (unlike Rio or BA - I'd say they do).
By Wallstreet on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 08:29 am: Edit |
I agree with both GF and FlHobbyer -
GF's point was the threat of violence is overblown - I'd have to agree with that not only because I was in Medellin and saw nothing first-hand, but I've never read of A SINGLE VIOLENT INCIDENT in any Colombia report on this site.
Sure there was JKarp's little adventure - and the upshot of that was he got free drinks and free pussy - not a bad ending.
But what FlHobbyer says is very accurate. Medellin and Cali aren't tourist oriented and some people get freaked out if there isn't a McDonald's in site and other Americans around. And some people don't want to speak anything but English - something that really won't work well in Medellin.
Now as far as a place that is a guaranteed good time, I've never been to Rio or BA, but I would throw Pattaya or Angeles City in there. You can't not have a really good time there. It's safe, English is spoken and the girls are plentiful and cheap. There's something for everyone.
Me, I'm crazy for Medellin because it was the first place I've been where I didn't see a single American - and I like that. Throw in the climate, food, scenary and oh yeah, the girls and for me it was perfect.
But I like adventure. As Merlin once put it, if there was a good scene on the Gaza Strip, I'd go there too.

Very interesting and valid points about us "Extreme Mongering" types who seek out the adrenaline rush in addition to mongering and exploring. My experiences in visiting places like Cambodia and Colombia confirmed to me that People's "perceptions" turn out to be a world of reality to some people when these misperceptions are so often repeated by the media --i.e. Cambodia for criminals, or kidnappings in Phillipines or Colombia, etc. I've given up on being the counterpoint to these misperceptions and have accepted the fact that some guys can't and won't be comfortable in places like Cambodia or Colombia despite my, or other guys', repeated protests to the contrary.
There's a silver lining to all this b/c I'd personally hate to see these perceived "extreme Mongering" places turned into another crowded destination full of Ugly tourists and competitive mongers.
By FLhobbyer on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 05:10 pm: Edit |
Wow, extreme mongering... I didn't mean anyting extreme or even going to places with danger (real or overblown).
I more meant to contrast two types of monger - one that expects "Americanized" options/experiences, and one that AVOIDS such.
Look at girls... I avoid girls that speak English. Others list 'she spoke good English' as a benefit. Or how about food. I hate standard fare American food, be it burgers and fries, a chicken sandwhich, etc. I appreciate eating local food, and avoid places like McDonalds or TGIF be it in the US or abroad. And look at labels - we all know of the ugly American type... and there are the types that attempt to blend in be it speaking local language, using apartments versus hotels, or frequenting local bars and restaurants versus tourist areas.
Good points made, but I didn't mean to reference 'extreme mongering'
By Merlin on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 - 07:24 pm: Edit |
FLMonger, I put the word in quotes b/c many guys I talk to think I have a death wish or something by going to these supposedly "dangerous" places. They coined the term to refer to me, half-in-jest. If only people knew how genteel and civilized the mongering is in Colombia.
I certainly didn't want to imply that you were referring to such extremes in your earlier post. I agree 100% with your basic distinction between Americanized experiences and those of us wary of such.
