Before I flew to Rio just before Thanksgiving 2004, I bought a BrazilPass from United (on Varig) to go to Porto Alegre, Salvador, and Natal. It is necessary to purchase this ticket (at $100 per leg) before leaving the US, and to schedule your flights. You can change your reservations for $30 each time (changes in more than one leg are possible for the $30 if you do them at one time).

Sf4dfish had promised to show me POA, with which he was somewhat familiar. We had a little trouble scheduling it: generous fellow that he is, he had promised the same to another friend who was leaving Brasil before I arrived. So sf4dfish went to POA the week before I arrived with his friend, and then again with me on Nov 29.

I spent three days in Porto Alegre and Salvador, and two in Natal.

Porto Alegre is definitely an excellent mongering destination, with a number of venues available. Also, I really like all the garotas I’ve met from there, and so am looking forward to further explorations in that part of Brasil (Curitiba, Florianopolis, etc).

Salvador was great too, hot women and a very pretty place. It was rather spread-out, and I did not really evaluate the opportunities there. I could see living on the beach in Salvador; having plenty of women would not be a problem.

I would also go back to Natal, although I might take a garota along (albeit an open-minded one who would let me explore a bit). There wasn’t much information available on this board about mongering there, and I didn’t collect too much more that would make it a mongering “destination” in my mind.

With all three cities, a little Portuguese was necessary (or else a good guide, if such were available). My Portuguese, after repeating all the lessons in Pimsleurs I, II, and III multiple times, was barely adequate. Certainly I would have fared better if I could have communicated better, both in terms of finding more opportunities (especially in Natal) and securing better arrangements (services and costs).
