11 - Who’ll Stop The Rain?

As I was walking to the Oase parking lot at midnight on Friday, I heard a Texas drawl and paused to respond. They were two servicemen on leave, just in from Iraq. One commented, “It’s a crazy world, but it’s my job to live in it.”

On Saturday, Nadja confirmed that it had been a madhouse when soldiers on leave from Iraq invaded FKK World last summer.

Wonder how Karl Rove would spin this.

Wonder how Karl Rove would spin this?

He probably wouldn’t mention that the Thailand and Philippines sex trade is the direct outcome of American military presence, to wit:

"The enormous increase in sex tourism in Thailand in the 1970s and 1980s is directly tied to the Vietnam War. Bangkok became a major center for Rest and Recreation (R & R) leave, commonly known by the GIs as I & I (Intoxication and Intercourse). A large and steady stream of dollars entered the local economy through the sex industry.

When the war ended, the Thai government, the military, and business, needed to continue the flow of foreign exchange earnings. To this end, they promoted sex tourism, to such an extent that a group of high-ranking military general’s wives created a travel agency to organize the tours. After the war, many Americans chose not to go home. The saying was that there were no MIA in Vietnam; in reality they were all MIBs -- Mischief in Bangkok. From 1965 to 1993, the number of tourists grew from 250,000 to over 5 billion."

Similarly, an entire economy based on servicing servicemen evaporated when the US military abandoned major bases at Clark and Subic; Angeles City rose from its ashes. In fact, every hamlet where the American military has established a presence since World War II has catered to the needs of the troops.

To be fair, throughout history active-duty soldiers have always required accommodation, but Americans like to imagine, despite constant reminders to the contrary, that our boys are uniquely pure and innocent. History shows otherwise: during the Civil War, when Union troops sequestered in Memphis and Washington, D.C. were afflicted with venereal disease at rates approaching 90%, the army legalized prostitution in Memphis and regulated it in DC, bringing then-virtually untreatable ailments under control while still affording troops carnal relief from the wartime stress.

But when the boys ship out, we suddenly get religion - what’s sauce for soldiers is somehow a sin for civilians.
