Sauna Karan D’ache is located approximately equidistant between the airport and downtown (about 8 minutes from each by taxi), in the São Geraldo neighborhood, and very close to the red light district of Farrapos. This is largely an industrial area, so not the kind of place you wander around in on foot. While you can walk from many parts of town, it’s probably a good idea to go via cab. The cab fare from downtown is roughly 7-8 reais.

The outside of the building is completely non-descript; at first I thought I had to be in the wrong place. It’s not an impressive edifice from the outside. The inside is also unique. Once past the reception area, much of the décor on the first level is made to look like a cave or grotto. You basically have to duck as you pass from the reception area to the lockers and then on to the sauna and the main bar (boate).

Sauna Karan D’ache, like other saunas in Porto Alegre, operates much like the termas of Rio, but there are a number of differences. Like a termas, you enter and receive a key to your locker, where you change into a robe. You don’t keep the key with you, however; you leave it with the locker room attendant. Remembering your key number is important, though, as you’ll use it for ordering drinks, getting access to your locker, and such. After changing you can wander further back where the sauna facilities are located. They have a large dry sauna, a large steam bath, a small pool, and plenty of showers with ample hot water. Attendants make sure you have towels, soap, and anything else you might need. One oddity about this and the other saunas in Porto Alegre is that the robes are sleeveless.

After an optional shower and sauna, you can proceed directly into the main bar. This is a large, cavernous space (there’s a theme), with tables and chairs and a couple of bars towards one end. Yes, you’ll find the women here. Sauna Karan D’ache has two boates; there is a smaller, quieter bar upstairs where a couple can go for more intimate conversation.

One of the big differences here is that it appears that the women don’t work for the house, but are freelancers. I say “appears” because I’m not 100% certain about this, but it sure appears this way. There are two clues suggesting this is the case. First, the women dress in a variety of ways: some in slutty “termas-wear,” some in street clothes, and everything in-between. The other big difference is that the house doesn’t set the price for your session; you negotiate that with the girl. My hunch is that this helps relieve the house from potential charges of pimping, since they simply provide a setting, and what these men and women choose to do in that setting, and at what price if any, is up to them. I’ll be honest, one of the things I really like about the Rio termas is price is never really a part of the conversation with a girl, which allows you to avoid a potentially sensitive topic (i.e., “here’s what I think you’re worth”). This is not something I particularly like about this sauna. On the other hand, I was fortunate enough to meet a Brazilian who, within minutes of entering the place, took me under his wings and explained some important features about the place. Most importantly, he told me that in general the going rate was 100 reais for a session, with the top end one should ever expect to pay being 150. He said the way he talks about price is that he simply says “I can give you a present of 100 reais” and girls either accept, counter-offer, or say no thanks, but he says few rarely say no, and most will take the 100. I tried his approach and it worked just as he’d suggested. I offered 100, she said fine, and off we went. The girls are paid directly, after your session, rather than when you leave. This means that you will return to your locker after the session, get your key from the attendant, get the agreed-upon amount of cash, step out into the hallway, and pay her. All other costs are paid when you leave.

Another sign suggesting that these girls are freelancers is that you can arrange to leave with them, rather than sessioning on the premises, and there’s no penalty for taking them out. And all of the girls gave me their phone numbers in plain view of the management.

Now, a bit more about prices. Entry is generally 30 reais, but it is 70 reais on Thurdays, because every Thursday is a festa with a live band (semi-decent), strip shows, and all the beer you can drink (sounds good, but I’m good for about 2 beers at most). My friend told me entry is 20 reais on Mondays, but I haven’t confirmed that (give me a break, I’m actually working down here). Use of a suite is 20 reais, seemingly for an hour. I say seemingly because we left after an hour, but no one called. My total costs of my three trips were 162, 200 (a Thursday), and 158. Not bad!

The facilities are quite nice. The sauna facilities are clearly superior to any of the facilities in the termas in Rio, although that’s not saying much, is it. Everything seemed clean, and the showers and saunas actually worked well. The small upstairs bar is reasonably quiet, with comfortable chairs and decent food and drinks. Drink prices are perfectly reasonable: 2 reais for a soft drink, 3 for a beer, and 5 for a gin and tonic. The large bar is a bit strange, because it is so large there’s no sense of the intimacy you find in most termas. Also, because the girls don’t work for the house, you don’t get groped as much by them and there’s not as much of a party atmosphere. But everyone does seem to have a very good time.

With respect to the quality of the girls, it’s a real mixed bag, as you might expect when the place is filled with freelancers. There were some real dogs and some absolute stunners, and given the average price of 100 reais, I thought there was good value to be had. The average girl here was not as pretty as the average termas girl in Rio, but the prettiest ones here were every bit as beautiful as the best I’ve seen in Rio. As to performance, I can only base my conclusion on three rounds, but these girls are brasilieras through and through, and they fuck with the best of them. I’ve been told the CBJ is more common in Porto Alegre, so the question of BBBJ v. CBJ is always part of my interview, and all three passed the test (both orally and, uuuummm, orally).

I’ve only been to this place in the afternoon/early evening. My Brasilian friend tells me that it’s quite dead after 9:00, as many of the girls go off to work other venues, such as Carmen’s and Gruta Azul, or work for an escort service. One of the girls I sessioned with told me she frequently worked evenings at Gruta Azul, where she got at least double the price at the sauna. She didn’t seem to resent this, but was just commenting on how the afternoon and late even markets seem to be quite different.

I’ll add more to this little description as I learn more. My Brazilian friend and I are going again next week, and I’ll try to get answers to some of the unanswered questions.

I generally don't ask, as it's not a requirement for me, but if a girl offers it up I'll often fill that third hole. Of the three at the sauna, one offered it and I took her up.

My sample size is a bit small at this point, but I'd guess that completa is just a little less common here than in Rio. Still, it's not hard to find completa girls, and the escort services will tell you who is and who isn't. I had a three-holer over today that I met downtown at a bar, so they are available.

Just an update:
Hit SK yesterday, as Thursdays are "Festa Days." The place was packed by 5:30 but there were more than enough cuties to go around. I found a cute and affectionate loira who was content to sit and talk for a long time. We eventually had an awesome session (120 reais) and afterwards she came out and sat with me until she had to head home at 8:30. Sweet girl! Like every single girl I've met there, she gave me her phone # and expressed an interest in getting together outside. Brownluvswhite was also at the club and he picked a very hot-looking loira, but she would not session outside, as she's married.

The staff in this place amaze me. I hadn't been in in 7-8 weeks, but I walked in the door and they called me by name. They are exceptionally helpful. One guy I've chatted with a fair amount always locates a nice table for me and offers to introduce any girls I find interesting.

I remain impressed with this place. It's a strange combination of termas and nightclub. The band playing yesterday was pretty good, and I danced several slow dances with my partner. And people pound down the drinks during these festas, contributing to the party atmosphere. I've never failed to have a great time here.

OK, OK, I'll have to try Karandache next time I get to POA. Depending if I go alone or with wife, I'll have to either duck "the boss" or the current mistress, but I'll figure something out... Thanks for the updates!

Another update:

Returned to POA after a business trip to the States, so immediately unpacked and headed to SK. It was a Friday, first time I'd visited on a day other than "Festa Quinta" and the scene is completely different.

The big party room downstairs is closed on days other than Thursdays (or unless there's some other type of festa). All the action takes place at a smaller upstairs bar. Entrance is 39 reais; drinks are extra. The sauna facilities are all open, including the upstairs hydromassage and massage room (pretty decent massage after hydromassage for only 20 reais).

The upstairs bar is smaller; a long rectangular room with a bar at one end and a bandstand at the other. A two-piece band (bass, keyboards, drum machine) was playing, beginning at 5:00. When I rolled in there were about 15-20 girls and 8-9 guys. The place was quiet! Guys are in sauna outfits, girls in street clothes. The program is like this: see someone you like, wave her over (or ask a waiter to do so), buy her a drink if you want, see if she passes your interview, and either session with her on site or take her out (no fee for doing so). The girls there were a small subset of those who show on Thursdays, and the talent level was modest. I waited until one I knew showed, and I took her out for dinner, with dessert at my apartment for 100 reais.

All the same, I'll stick to Thursdays at SK. The atmosphere in the boate was almost morgue-like. I couldn't wait to get out.

And another update:

Yesterday was Festa Quinta at SK, but a special one, as it was SK's 35th anniversary. So the sauna pulled out all the stops and put on a great festa. There were about 3 times as many girls as usual, and I saw some of the most beautiful women in my life yesterday. Nossa! Most really dressed up for the occasion, in very sexy outfits (evening gowns, slinky outfits with skirts slit to the hip, etc.). The juxtaposition with guys in their blue sleeveless robes was a bit odd...but the women looked awesome.

The band playing was superb, and everyone was dancing. One of the things I like about SK on Thursdays is that it really takes on a club atmosphere, and with a good live band and sound system, the place really jumps.

SK always has special shows on Thursdays, and this time they brought in 4 strippers who were totally stunning. Even the girls in SK were talking about how beautiful these women were. The entertainment also featured a lesbian show (pretty hot, and this pair, who are lesbian lovers, was available for programs) and a Roberto Carlos imitator who looked exactly like Carlos and sounded very much like him. A few garotas thought he was Roberto Carlos and offered him free programs!

SK also brought out free salgados and doces (I stuffed myself on brigadeiros) and kept the ice cold beer flowing. All in all, a great festa.

I pulled a complete sweetheart and had a great GFE session. One of the things I like about these festas is that the girls almost never do more than one program, so when you hook up with a girl, she stays with you until closing at 9:00. My sweetheart gave me dancing lessons and was happy to chat and cuddle.
