During May 2002 I visited Tachileik, report follows. Day after I left Mai Sae a bomb was let off on the Myanmar side of the river near my guest house and Thai-Burmese borders closed shortly after due to skirmishes with rebels. I retuned from Thailand in June so have not kept up to date with the border situation.

Tachileik is a Burmese border town on Thailand's northern frontier and a short walk across the bridge from Mai Sae. I had a good look around the town and decided I'd be better off staying in Mae Sai and making daytrips into Myanmar whenever I feel the urge. Accommodation didn't appear that appealing while Mae Sai has plenty of friendly guest houses.

Tachileik is brimming with market stalls, not my scene but daytripping tourists lap it up. Like The Cambodian border town of Koh Kong it runs a Thai Baht economy. This morning I enjoyed my breakfast at the open air tea house in the centre - a plate full of samosas, coffee and large flask of tea for 18 baht (I'd thought the waitress had said 80 baht and confused her by handing over four 20 baht notes).

I'd heard about a sanuk scene here in Tachileik but hadn't come across any first hand accounts nor had anyone I spoke to in Mai sae any information on it. Furthermore my Burmese landlord had advised that it would be dangerous for me to travel out of town. If a farang had told me this I would have taken the advice with a pinch of salt, but I from a local then I listen. However it's not in my nature to visit a new town, let alone a new country, and not explore the scene.

So you can imagine I was slightly aprehensive as I boarded the motobike to head out to the red light area, approximately 10 km away. And the old heart started fluttering slightly as we passed a military checkpoint. I'd taken a reasonable amount of cash with me so I figured if I was held up could pay my way out of trouble. Anyway motoboy shouted something to the guard and he waved us through. As it happened we didn't really leave the town, it's quite a large sprawling place. We ventured into the town's rural area where the ladyhouses are scattered around. The brothels are quite basic huts but slightly different to the places I know in cambodia. Firstly they're isolated from eachother and not in a row of shops. Setting is very rural and each house is like a small commune with a number of buidings (huts) where girls eat, sleep, wash etc; and recption hut where punters are served drinks. We stopped off at half a dozen before I met a beautiful 20 year old Burmese lady I simply could not leave without getting to know a little better. Her face was an absolute painting with the sweetest of smiles, one of the prettiest girls I've met on my travels. Hasa lovely thick light brown hair typical of some Burmese ladies I've been meeting recently.

This particular house was a complex of bamboo structures - very oriental! As with every venue we'd seen the starting price for short-time was 500 baht but that came down to 300 baht after some painful negotiation. I hate doing this in front of the girl, it gives the impression that I don't think she's worthy enough. The truth is this lady was worthy of much more than 300 baht but I hate being fleeced by a greedy mamasan.

My Myanmar angel was extremely affectionate but incredibly shy once we got inside her (fan-less)bedroom. Nonetheless we had a terrific time together and a lovely memory for me to take back to LOS. Afterwards I was not pleased to discover the washing facility right in the middle of the yard - a hose and low concrete tank - very agricultural. Not the ideal location for me to wash my knob especially as my motoboy and another girl were also washing themselves there. Ah well, it had to be done........sometimes I get allergic to certain condoms so a post coital wash was essential. Last think I want is meeting up with Walking Street Girl in a few days time with red blotchy knob! My antics caused general amusement in the house and mamasan came out to watch!

So my first experience of Sanuk in Myanmar was pretty good, I may well be back for more in the next couple of days however the delightful Burmese ladies in Mai Sae have been doing a very good job of entertaining me. In the houses I visited all ladies were young, 18-22 years old, most very pretty indeed. I spotted a couple of Chinese girls as well as Burmese. Although pretty I have to say that the brothel girls (as with Cambodia) are not quite my type - very funloving but not the voluptuous Thai bargirl I usulally go for. But am I complaining.......no way!

Got a guide to take me around the area, it seemed residential as well, went and chose one in one place , real cheap only 300B for an hour.

Another girl I went with covered her breast so I gave her another 300B to loosen up, she was pleased with that and as soon as we finished she went out to buy something to eat.

I started to get annoyed with the guide he ask me if I were enjoying myself, I said its a bit disappointing I was expecting 18 to 22 year olds so he let me go to a tin hut off his tour, I saw a nice one 24 years I ask for long time to which the madam said 2500B, too much said my guide, the Mamasan had added all the 300B hours up, I paid it I didn't care she was good and cute, the Hotel don't say anything when you take them there.

What currency are you using? Thai Baht or Myanmar money?
At the Thai rate .... 2500 is about $75 while Myanmar it's $2.

I used Thai Baht,they give you back change in Thai baht. My guide said they don't usually charge so much for over night I'd chosen a place off his tour.
