I must have made that comment about 30 times on this trip. From the beginning, all the way until the end of my trip, it was one "Wow, this is fucked up" after another. I already posted the sory about the cops trying to rob my buddy, so I wont go into it again.

1) Continental charged me DOUBLE the miles in order to fly down to Rio. Unfortunately, I couldnt make plans until the last minute, which meant that I either had to pay $1400 bucks or use 100,000 miles to fly. I only had 105K, so it completely wiped out my miles! Fucked up thing was, there were MANY empty seats on both legs of my trip, couldnt understand why I had to use double the miles.

2) ATM was only givng out 2.32R compared to the cambios, the cambios were giving 2.55R. WTF?

3) Number of girls who are still living in the past when it comes to pricing. They just dont understand that the days of 4-500R are gone! Good thing was, I saw alot of girls who were asking for those high prices, leaving alone very night. I think mongers are finally catching on, that WE set the price, not the girls. Its perfectly ok, to pass up on a girl because her price is too high and to tell her that that is the reason why you are choosing someone else. Cant tell you how many times I was called a "snob" on this trip because I made a decision not pay their outrageous prices.

4) Saw about 5 girls who are MARRIED to americans and all of them were still working in Help. They all claimed that they were waiting for their visas to come in. Each one begged me not to say anything to their American husbands " Thumper, you didnt see me here!" I would respond "Yes I did! I am looking at you right now!" They would real upset and try to make me promise not to say anything. I told them all "If you husband doesn't ask me, I wont say shit. But if he does ask if I've seen you in help, I will tell him the truth! I wont lie for you!" Most of them got really pissed off with my attitude; "I usually just asked the "why shoud I lie for you? I know he is sending you money and you are still in help, thats fucked up".

5) Met 2 guys who had no idea that their wives used to be gdps. "Dude, just because you met your wife in the mall/ store/ walking down the street/ regular job, doesnt mean that she never was on the programma!!!" I know a girl who works 7 days a week at a telephone company and she still works part-time, not even her best friend knows what she does. There are plenty of girls who have 9-5s and still fuck tourists. I feel really sorry for them because the girls have them completely hoodwinked into thinking that they are "good girls"

6) Saw a group of about 10 teenagers robbing tourist in the walkway between Meia Pataca and the Havanna club at around 3AM. Luckily, I saw them while I was standing in front of the hotdog truck and I decided to take a cab. I walked back to the tourist police in front of Help (the ones that sit in the patrol car under the tree) and told them what I saw. They did absolutely nothing, just went back to sitting down and reading the newspaper.

Since he was such a smart ass, I felt like telling him that his girl had been working in help every night before he got there, but I kept my mouth shut. He was bragging on how he had his girl locked down and that he was paying the waiters, bouncers and chicklet kids to tell him if they saw his girlfriend working. I told him "Just because you pay a few people, dont think thay they are going to tell you the truth, they will just string you along in order to keep the money flowing" He got pissed when I said that.

Then I said "She could be working right now, while you are in brasil and you would never know it!" He was like "Thats bullshit, she is ALWAYS with me!" I told him "Come on man, Ive been coming to Rio for almost 9 years, I ve seen how these girls work. Do you honestly think it takes them 5 hours to get their hair and nails done? Do you really think it takes them 10 hours to go home and check on the house and bring new clothes back to Copa? Do you really believe it takes them 6 hours to go to the mall and buy 2 outfits? Of course not. They will tell you that it will take all day, but they are really off fucking some guy that emails and calls her all the time. He knows you are in Brasil and that she cant spend the night, so she will come up with an excuse to get away for a a few hours. It happens all the time. These girls are not stupid! When you tell them that you are going to hang with your buddies for a few hours, they know you are going to a terma. They will smile and say "ok, call me later" and then get right on their cell phone and start arranging dates.

Freaking idiot didnt believe anything I told him. Funny thing was, he bought her a plane ticket to go back home to her city, she was supposed to leave the same day he did. Sure enough, the very next day, I saw her up in Help. She walked up to me laughing and said not to say anything to him because he sends her 4 thousand dollars a month not to work.

8) Met 2 girls who are dating multi-millionaires. I know one of the guys, the other I just heard about. And both of these fucking girls are still working!! One guy bought his girl a 3 bedroom penthouse in Lagoa, the other guy gave his girl 100,000R to open up a clothes store in Barra. The second girl gets 8 thousand bucks a month not to work. She only fucks on recommendation because she doesnt want to get caught. It just went ot show, that money doesnt solve anything. If these guys, who are millionaires cant keep a girl from working, then what chance do I have.

9) Realised on this trip, just how jaded I have become after 9 years of traveling to Brasil. I met a beautifull young woman who just started working in Copa about 3 weeks before I met her. A real sweetheart, I ended up keeping her for about 18 days out of my 3 week trip. I could tell on a few occasions that she wanted to have "the talk". About not wanting to work and trying to go staright, but I kept ducking it. Even though, I could easily send her money every month, to help her go to school and try to get out of the life, I find myself not wanting to do anything, because of all the bullshit I have seen over the years. Its fucked up because she is a great girl and I am sure given half a chance, she has a shot at making a better life for herself! But I'm too fucked up, to be optimistic, its damn shame.

10) Finally realised just how powerfull television is as a tool of representing people of different cultures. Most of these girls only know about black men from watching rap videos and seeing us playing professional sports, so they are under the illusion that this is how most of us live. I had to sit down with one girl in help and explain to her that most brothas over the age of 25, do not appreciate being called a nigga! (Even by other black people) She had watched our videos and heard the word being used every 10 seconds and seen some of these young punks who who come to Rio, calling themselves that. But she didnt understand that not all black men that find that cute or funny. She actually walked up to me in help and was like "Whats up my nigga?" I looked at her like "Excuse me?" She actually repeated it! Then it was like "My nigga, can you buy me a drink?" I sat her down and explained to her that she may not want to use that word one very brotha she meets, save that bullshit for the 20 year hip hop fools!

I asked the girl who was getting 2 thousand dollars a week from her boyfriend why she continues to work if she is getting so much money. She said because at any moment he can find someone younger, preetier and with a bigger ass! When he decides that he wants omeone else and cuts me off, then I will have to start all over again. That hasn't happened in a while, and while many of the garotas were just kids back then, when President Collor closed the banks back in the 90's, your average middle class Brasilian family was pretty much wiped out, as inflation just destroyed their savings as it sat stuck in the bank, earning minimal interest when prices were doubling every three months. Oh, what was Presidente Collor's slogan? "No money, no inflation"

As a result, the prevailing idea is to spend it while you have it. So, even though a garota may be getting US $8k per month, she's most likely spending a large portion of it - and giving away to family, friends, etc what she doesn't spend. As a lot of guys with Brasilian wives/family will attest, the "sick water buffalo" story is not just used on horny gringos, it's used on anyone with money that a garota has any inroad with.

Ok. Now that the dose of reality is there (all of these girls are crazy which is partially why we like them). What would we do or want to do to change it? Nothing is my answer. So while it seems messed up, it really is how we want it. Short of the bump in prices, but as you said, it is market driven - but there is still the demand at present. Heck, in June there were more guys there than my first trip to Brazil during carnival like 8 years ago.

A few options.

Stop seeing girls in Brazil. Realize that the situation is not for those guys who are looking for true love. I've counseled guys and have been counseled to. Regarding the pricing on your flight, that's due to 'yield management'. They don't want to fill the plane with frequent fliers using miles, they want to keep a number of seats empty, for sale, even up to the last minute. And even at that point, knowing those seats will go empty, they still won't give it to you as they don't want everyone with miles knowing they might be better off waiting until the last minute while checking all along if the plane will be full.

Yield management is also why one seat on the plane say domestic flight might sell for $200 in advance but someone else pays nearly $1000 for a seat next to it.

My understanding is that preto and negro(which sounds a hell of a lot like nigger when a carioca says it and startled me when I heard someone casually say it) are pretty much neutral ways in referring to someone of African ancestry. The big no-no in Brazil is to call a black person a creole. It is similar to a white person calling a black american here in the states a nigger and as far as I know Brazil has a law against referring to someone as a creole.

There are 3 exchange rates (and each of them has the 'sell' and 'buy' rate, of course).

The official commercial rate. Importers, exporters pay them. I think banks pay them too, atms. The rate used to be driven by government decree, now it is floating on the international market. You cannot buy dollars at the commercial rate unless you do some maior paperwork, like export/import licenses, etc.



The tourist rate. I actually am not quite sure if atms and cambios pay this one. Also not quite sure if they still have it. It probably is driven by the black market rate


The black market rate. Driven by supply and demand of people who move illegal money in and out of the country. At least illegal for tax purposes, and illegal due to currency restrictions. Probably even illegal drug, corruption etc. money.

Black market rate, over the decade, was 20-30% higher then the official rate, once it was 200% higher. Now it is usually 5%-10% higher. I got pissed when it was equal to the atm rate a few days ago
