As is with all third world countries, there are some things to watch out for when traveling and staying in Angeles City. That’s not to say that you have to keep your guard up at all times in AC, but you just have to be aware of some scams by locals and some of the girls. I will also discuss what to do about tipping in AC and some tricks to help you have a stress free trip.

A. Scams:

1. Local Men: If any guy approaches you and acts like he knows you, ignore him immediately. He is trying to get you to play in a card game or trick you out of your money somehow. This is much more prevalent in Manila but there are still a few desperate hucksters out there trying to get you to join in a family card game. Only speak to the local men working at the hotel your staying at, the bars you frequent and the restaurants you eat in. You don’t need to be jaded or angry when local men are trying to be friendly, they are not all bad but just keep your wits about you. Most of the mongers are nice guys on this board and these men can smell this a mile away and will try to take advantage of such. Never get your shoes cleaned or shined by the local kids as they are all full of shit and will ask for 50 pisos but will then tell you its for one shoe or that coloring for the shoe is 200 pisos extra...fuck them, don’t give them business or you might see yourself surrounded by other locals trying to get your money.

2. Beggars: It’s a sad reality in every third world country that there are some people down on their luck and need help. I will always give a few pisos to anyone handicapped or extremely old. I know that the money might go to drugs or alcohol but so whatAvoid the women begging in front of Margarita Station or any of the exchange kiosks as they are scammers looking for drug money. They will give you a fake prescription or say they need money for their babies milk...it’s total bullshit. Hate to sound cynical and jaded but you have to use your judgment to pick and choose who to give money to. Right now the walk from the Fields Bars past Margarita Station and onto the Jeepney station is flooded with child beggars working for syndicates. Many of the kids are glue sniffers and will clutch and grab you and you will always find the lady with her baby baking in the sun with a hand out screaming ‘money”. Maybe Im just jaded but I wish they would clear this shit out.

3. Money Exchange: I have never had a problem being shorted money at an exchange booth except for Mexico. Be that as it may, always count your money in front of the person giving you your pisos as they might try to give themselves some extra commission. I have never had a problem but be cautious.

B. TRICKS-
. Bargirls: Unfortunately, the girls will give you the most problems with your trip if you let them. Realize that these girls understand that Western men are more kind and generous than the local men they have to deal with and these girls will normally try to use this to their advantage. I rarely have had problems with the working girls but know some who have and I may have just been lucky so far. When you arrive at your hotel with your girl, always empty your pockets of your pisos and put them in your safe. This is why in room safes are crucial to your trip. If you just place it on the counter or in your closet, they will watch your every move and you might be light in the pockets afterwards.
The other more common trick is girls that are runners. When you pay the 1,000 piso barfine, that means she must stay with you for the night. Make sure that this is very clear before you leave the bar. Always clarify that the girl is not a cherry girl and does not have menstruation. If you do not qualify this with the mamasan or manager, it might be your word against hers and she will always give a bullshit story. Many girls(about 50%) have local boyfriends, some have kids living with them and others live with their family. They may want to leave right after the first fuck, if you don’t qualify it with them earlier. It is imperative that you qualify with the girl whether she is a cherry girl that doesn’t fuck or whether she is on the rag and cant fuck. Many times girls give a bullshit story that they are cherry or have mens because they don’t want to be barfined at all or by you. Give them the benefit of the doubt first as many of the girls truly are cherry girls and they do work during mens. I have never had a runner in all my times but I think I have been labeled a babaero/Playboy and they know I want only short time sessions during the early evening and daytime hours. The problem you may have is that many of them don’t want to leave and want to stay the whole next day as your hotel is much nicer than their apartment. Just tell them you have to meet a friend or something and they will get the hint.

Once you leave Angeles, that is where the real scamming takes place. It’s a good idea to keep in touch with the girls for your next trip. These girls are genuinely sweet and are trained to please men since birth....BUT....they are also smart and have a lot of big time financial problems due to lazy family members and/or worthless boyfriends. They will start with the “I miss you” and “I love you” emails. Followed by countless requests for you to return back to the Philippines as soon as possible. The problem is that you may be one of many they are saying the same thing to. They’re smart. They know that we are not of the monogomous nature and they are trying to catch the big fish that will get them out of poverty. They are hedging their bets by having a plan B and C. I really cant blame them. After a few weeks, you might get some story about needing money for this or that. Don’t send it unless you can afford to lose it and don’t care. 5,000 pisos goes a long way in the Philippines but they know we think in terms of dollars and will ask for outrageous sums. Also realize that they have ruthless family members and boyfriends sometimes who put a lot of pressure on them to support their laziness and bad habits and know that they have some kano’s overseas with big hearts and bigger wallets. Don’t presume that someone else is writing their emails as almost all of the girls speak and write English, unlike their Thai counterparts whom just send form letters asking for money due to a broken motorbike or sick buffalo. If you like the girl and want to help her, by all means do so but don’t expect anything in return.

C. TIPS:

Everyone has their own definition what a good tip is for girls and other services. You should always tip 10-15% to your waitress at the bars and restaurant. The locals and local expats are cheap fucks who don’t tip much so be generous if the service is good. Always send a few pisos or so to guys that open the door for you and security guards. Always tip the DJ when you request certain songs. Tip the girls according to service and time. Short time sessions should not be tipped unless it’s an extensive short time and the girls is a great performer. Don’t tip runners. Hygien appointments and trips to Manila are just bullshit lines so she can go home and fuck her trike drive boyfriend. Long time sessions can be up to 500 pisos and should be a minimum of 500 if you fuck her at least 3 times. Only give them more than that if the session is mindboggling. They will never bitch about the tip but you don’t want to be labeled as a kuripot. I gave a girl a 150 piso tip for short time once as I had no change and she went ranting and raving to everyone about it. I boycott girls like that and tell everyone to stay away. Some girls will try to lead the newbies to believe that 1,000 piso tip is the norm.... bullshit. Japanese and Koreans may pay tips like that, you don’t have to. The exception to this is when the girl devotes a lot of extra time with you during the trip and you like her....give her an extra thousand or two when you leave. Don’t take advantage of girls who are giving their extra time with you away from the bar....don’t assume you don’t have to pay them and that you are getting away with payment.....give them money always and never less than 500 pisos if they are fucking you on their own time....they will never ask for it but you are obligated to do it, regardless of how cheap you are.

I agree with almost your whole trip report. HOWEVER, I have not met many bar girls in the P.I that I would say were smart. Most are stupid in fact and try to start the scam to soon by saying they love you the same day they meet you.

I know by wretched experience that 95% of these girls, and most of the Filipino nurses as well, have no sense of judgement or original thought. You have to spell out every detail over and over again before they get any clue.

I'm pretty sure Blazers was referring to Japanese and Korean nationals, although I'm not sure even that clarification lessens how the sweeping generalization would be interpreted by Japanese and Korean Americans, or other Asian-American groups for that matter.

Furthermore, I doubt that it's only Japanese and Koreans overpaying on tips, that kind of complaint goes on everywhere including places much less visited by these groups. In my opinion it's more often an issue of status and experience than related to race. It could also be preparation, I'm not sure what kind of pricing discussions go on in the asian language forums.

Blazers had a great point that I feel needs to be repeated and highlighted. That point is DO NOT TIP RUNNERS.

To be fair, you talk with them and make an agreement before they get to the room. For example, they stay for 3 hours and then if they want to leave, they can leave. If they leave before 3 hours, then no tip. Making an agreement before getting to the room is important because you dont want the woman to go crazy after receiving no tip.

I think the best point that Blazers brought up was to qualify everything with the mamasan. For example, you bring the mamasan over and tell her that the girl is not going to get a tip if she leaves early.

While it is very rare, the girls can make trouble for you while you are there. I have heard a rumor or two of a bargirl going to the local cops and telling stories, i.e. the monger hit the bargirl or whatever. Then all of a sudden you have a few cops knocking at your door armed with M16A1s. You can probably pay your way out of this, but you dont want to be put in this position in the first place.

Blazers .. thanks for the posting and i do agree with u 100%. I have visited 6 times to phili and i have connection with many girls. Some of them try to prove that i am their only friend ..and as u said.. there are countless ways they try to convince you, why they need money and why i need to send them money - but i got my lesson first hand .. what i do now .. just tell all of them "I do not loan anyone any money .. if i give u some money .. i do not want to get that back .. and i will give that when i am there, with u. And if u really love me, please don't ask me to break my own promise" .. this is working quite good
