We went to Nana Hotel to eat. She was offering to pay my airfare to Singapore if I would accompany her, since she could get a 2-week visa if accompanied by her “boyfriend” instead of being an obvious hooker coming to work (without a work permit), which would get her a one-week visa (and two weeks in jail if caught working). I had fun amusing the farang at the next table with his two girls by telling Bua I would also bring her to LA, she was drunk and I got away with a lot there—making the best of a bad situation. The restaurant was an interesting experience, an extensive seating area with a disco attached, and katoeys walking through occasionally (apparently there was a katoey show somewhere on the huge premises).

Along one side were tanks with half a dozen different species of lobsters, different sizes of prawns, numerous fish swimming, crabs, and along the other side were more tanks and an on-ice section with still more seafood. I saw a weird and ferocious-looking shellfish that I had never seen before, it looked like a big prawn with a non-tapered 8-inch tail and dozens of paddle-feet under the tail, and an elongated scary-looking head, longer than a big prawn’s would be. Of course, I had to try one, even though it cost about $20 (seafood was sold by weight, as in many places) with lobster-class prices. And it was delicious, succulent flesh tasty like lobster, I’d get one again. I was relieved to see that it was served headless; Bua had taught me how to eat prawn heads (the half the restaurants don’t serve in America), but I wouldn’t want to TOUCH this creature’s barbecued head. We also got a couple of kilos of prawns at 600 baht each, they were bigger than the ones we ate at restaurants in the Nana area for the same price (or higher), but the oysters were smaller.

We went out a few more times, I told her I couldn’t afford her every night. I eventually helped Bua buy her ticket to Singapore, putting it on my credit card. The ticket was 8,000 baht, and I owed her for two nights—so I told her she owed me 2,000 baht, so I would pay her 1,000 the next time I saw her. And she went off to Singapore on a 10-day visa nine days before I left Bangkok, so I didn’t get to see her again.

When I returned in January, I was only in Bangkok for two days. I went into Angelwitch the first night, but Bua had already been barfined. I called her the next day to tell her I was going to barfine her that night, and she showed up dressed unusually nicely—even Dave was impressed. She asked me for 100 baht to have the katoey down the hall do her make-up, and later another 100 baht to get her nails done.

The owner did not come in with the pay until well after 1 AM, the girls were hanging around in their street clothes waiting in the bar with all the lights on and no music. Depressing. I saw her pay slip, she had barfined 30 of the last 31 nights!

In the morning, I asked Bua to recall that I had loaned her 2,000 baht to buy her plane ticket to Singapore, and gave her 1,000 baht. She hit the ceiling. I told her that we were friends but had a business relationship as well, and if she got mad at me and stalked off, well, there were plenty more beautiful girls in Bangkok. She stalked off, saying she wouldn’t ever see me again.

By the way, SAD....I never said AC girls were better than BKK girls as far as looks were concerned...that would be absurd. But while you are in the land of the most beautiful women in Asia(LOS), it just doesnt make sense to take shit from girls and then reward them for it. You don't think it interesting that you don't mind paying an extra 1000THB ($25USD) for an evening with "the courtesan", but will contest a taxi ride where the money in question is thousands of Rupiah (less then $1)?

Criticizing people's pics is a bad idea. It seems a lot easier, though, when the guy devotes several paragraphs to how mercenary she was.

This whole thread seems to be full of Asia vets shaking their heads at newbies' low standards re: attitudes and puking money and the less experienced ones telling us they can do what they want, it's their money, and that somehow they're getting 'quality' that we can't apparently afford. Keep deluding yourselves with those ideas. It will make you feel better.

Haven't we all succumbed to some stupid thought process like this at some time? Let's face it - we all want the boom boom, we don't actually want the taxi - it's just a necessity. People will gladly fork over their cash for things they want, but they'll piss and moan all day about paying for necessities, and in many cases, will haggle accordingly.

Fish—too late, my Brasil visa expired in November. And I’m grounded here for an unknown period, have to take care of some business stuff. But I’ve started the Pimsleur Portuguese CDs as a refresher, and am hoping the real will lose some value against the dollar.

Phoenixguy—It’s fun haggling over a taxi fare, but it doesn’t turn the taxista’s attitude sour, like haggling over a girl’s price can. Bua wouldn’t budge from 3,000 baht anyway, and there are other girls in Nana that are at the top of the price range (I heard the exotic Malay-Brasileira at Angelwitch was getting 2,000-2,500 for ST—several times a night). I try to be familiar with the market price range, and stay close to that. I don’t try to beat impoverished third world citizens out of a quarter just for the fun of it (usually).

And these trip reports are like the news—bad news sells, but when things are going along smoothly, there’s not much to talk about (since I stopped writing pornographic trip reports, blow-by-literal-blow). So you certainly get a specific impression of Bua, which is not the whole picture. I spent half a dozen days and nights with her, and all were wonderfully fulfilling to me until the last morning, except the night when she was drunk—and even there I had my fun. Yes, I'm willing to take a certain amount of "crap" in a relationship (it's not like I don't give any) if I'm pretty happy overall. I’ll say it again—no matter what all you guys think about Bua or me, I’d do it all again with her.
