While in Rio last week for business, a group of friends from our Brazil office decided to surprise me with a trip to a Rio "Terma." Translated directly "terma" means "spa" but in Rio it means "legal brothel." After asking around, the word on the street seemed to be that the two bast places to go were "Centarus" and "Solarium" with Solarium perhaps being a little better, or at least a better value.

It is both similar to and very different from a SF massage parlor.

When you first go in, the reception room looks a lot like a legit, upscale day-spa, with the exception of a tv monitor which displays alternating pictures of some of the more popular girls in skimpy bikinis and come-hither poses. The girl at the reception desk gives you a key with a number and a wristband, and explains their prices, which, when you factor the exchange rate (a very favorable 3-1 right now) work out to about US$180 for entry, 40 minutes in a room with the girl of your choice, and full service. More if you want more time, more girls, or if you order drinks, less if you do less.

Now here is where it gets a little different.

After you take your key, you go into the changing room where you take off your clothes (keep your underwear on, is my advice) and put them along with your wallet into a locker and put on a nice clean terry cloth robe which is handed to you by one of the young female attendants. Lock your locker, put the key on your wrist, and go on to the bar. I am told there are showers and a sauna room, but I did not see them. You are told not carry any money with you into the spa itself- the key with the number is your "account" and you simply pay the total tab at the desk when you leave. Everything is fixed-price and explained ahead of time, so there is no haggling. Nice.

Upstairs in the bar area, there are about 20 or 30 girls in tiny thong bikinis or hot pants and bikini tops. Some are dancing to the rock music the DJ is playing, others are just standing or sitting around looking sexy and tying to make eye contact. The youngest look about 18 and the oldest ones look like they might be in their mid 30s. Most of them have sweet, thin hardbodies, but a few look like they need to lose about 10 pounds. Their faces range from average to very pretty, but none stand out as complete knockouts. There are also about 8 or 10 other guys in the room as well, most of them have a drink or a cigar in one hand and one of the prettier girls in the other. At one side of the room a DJ sits at the audio console, at the other end is a full-service bar. You can order drinks at the bar or from time to time a waiter makes the rounds. You pay simply by giving your locker key number. The walls, of course, are all mirrors.

My friends try to introduce me to a pretty blonde, but she speaks little English and I speak less Portuguese, so after "what's your name" "you're very pretty" and "this is your first time here?" we don't have a lot to talk about. Of course that doesn't stop her from asking "you want to make love," to which I say not now, maybe later. I need to look around a bit first, after all.

Let me say that I have been to lots of AMPs over the years, but always alone and always with a certain dread of being seen by someone that knows me. It is very strange going to a legal brothel with a group of people that I know from work. Even though most of them are Brazillian and married and think nothing of it, the fourth guy is an American like me and I can tell he is also not exactly sure how to deal. I mean, these guys know I am married, what will they think of me if I go off with a girl? And yet they keep trying to convince me that this is a chance I shouldn't pass up... Then one of our guys dissapears and we assume that he has found his girl for the night, or at least the next 40 minutes. So at least that problem is solved, to some extent- if I go with a girl I won't be the only one.

The next problem is selecting a girl. There is no shortage of pretty ones, but I know that I can only chose one tonight. One advantage to the girls' dress code here is that you can more or less see exactly what you will get before you commit. Should it be the tiny thin one with the only moderately pretty face, or should it be the cute blonde that is just a tiny bit thicker (not fat!) than I like, or should it be the tall brunette with the gorgeous face, or should I just take the girl with the best tits? Decisions, Decisions....

Then I start thinking, what about the STD risk, I mean, this is RIO, after all, and I know that even with a condom you can still get plenty of nasties and my wife is going to want some action the day I get home, no time to allow time for a quick STD screening at Planned Parenthood. (Some bugs can take weeks to test positive, anyway) The girls are all young and healthy looking, but is it worth the risk?

Finally I get up the courage to talk to a girl. It is frustrating because of the language barrier. Most speak about the same amount of English as I speak Portugusese, which is about 2 or 3 phrases, but they are still very friendly and they all ask, "you want to make love?" After talking to a few I pick a small cute blonde and we go downstairs where one of the attendants who speaks English asks me, 40 minutes or one hour? I go with 40 minutes. Then she suggests I use the bathroom but strangely, no shower.

Then she puts me in a small room with bed, similar to but a litle nicer than one of the more upscale AMPs in the states except there is a phone in the corner, presumably for the girl to use if she gets in trouble or for the house to ring us when time is up. All the walls are mirrors, which is a nice touch. I wait about 5 minutes and the girl comes back without the bikini, instead wearing a shear red baby-doll style negligee.

I am not sure if the girl normally gives a massage first, as I am so horny at this point that we go straight to making out. She likes kissing, deep french kissing, which is a nice surprise since I so rarely get that at US AMPs these days. At the reception desk, I am quitely hoping that the cashier will just hand me a credit card slip to sign but instead says "Smith, $182.50" (Pretend that my last name is Smith) loud enough for everyone in the room to hear. Great, now there is no doubt, based on the menu that was read to us when we entered, exactly which entre I ordered. Then she reads the other guys' totals to them and I am not as completely embarrassed, as at least one other guy ordered the same thing and one of them might have ordered more, although that might just be his drink tab.

On the car ride home, the guys congratulate me for enjoying some of the special pleasures that Rio has to offer and I suggest that the next time they come to the bay area, I will take them to San Francisco and return the favor. I explain that US massage parlors in SF are staffed almost exclusively with asian girls, and this interests them even more as they don't have much of that down in Rio. One of the guys says that he was a little dissapointed that we didn't go to Centarus becasue it is bigger, has prettier girls, and they _don't_ wear bikinis in the bar area. But the second one counters that the prices were much better at Solarium and they agree on that point.

Yep..it's easy to forget. The pangs of our conscious. Wondering though..after having been to the establishments in the US, did you feel the same? Or was it the presence of your office workers that threw things off a bit?

Termas: $40R to $50R entrance fee. You don't have to take a girl to Cabine if you don't want to. Girl for 40 min = $150R 60 min (suite) = $200R. Example = Entrance and 40 min cabine = $200R (about $60US at current exchange rates). Help girls will ask for $100US but you should be able to get for about $150 to $200R for a few hours and $300 for all night. Don't pay more. Many Terma girls will meet you for $250R to $300R for all night after they get off work. There are a ton of all shades of women in Rio. There are lots of blond light skinned ones if that's what you like. Also a lot of brunettes with a brownish tan skin. I didn't notice as many black women percentage-wise at the termas as in say San Jose, Costa Rica, where you have a good deal of Dominincans. I did see a couple of gorgeous black garotas at the beach, but I didn't pursue it. I also thought I saw a higher percentage of black garotas at Help.

That's funny about your perception of the Brazil photos. I would say the exact opposite, that the Brazil section photos are overall higher quality than the B.A. ones. I think you, UW Photo, Moondog, d’Artagnan, and Ezy have some great shots, though. The first thing is that there are a lot more Brazil photos, about 1000 vs Argentina at about 275, so I would expect more shots of different types of garotas, some of which you may not like. Specifically, I liked your photos of Sandy, UWphotos of Augustina, and my favorite is Ezy’s photo of Claudia. I didn’t find Gena to be very attractive, though. Overall, there are a lot of photos from Argentina where the chica is 30-35, has fake tits, and maybe some work on the face too, or the face just isn’t that attractive to me. I tend to find younger more natural looking women more attractive, but that goes to each guys personal opinion.
