I usually travel in cycles. The first five months of the year is slow for me (in terms of travel) as I build up vacation time and save money. There are no paid US holidays (for me and my company) during the time from January 1 to Memorial Day. So I generally use this time to work hard, save dinero, and eagerly await my next trip. When Memorial Day arrives, the travel season starts for me. Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day and Thanksgiving are usually ALL trips. Sometimes I go somewhere over Christmas, but not always. I took a short “teaser and build miles trip” in January. This was mainly a way for me to hedge re-qualifying as AA platinum this year. I liked the trip, and while expensive and short, I may do more to assure prequalification or to get additional miles in the future.

My last trip to the Philippines was in November. I took a trip to Colombia last December and then that short trip to Germany in January. That made it almost four and a half months between trips and five and half months between “real” trips. To say I was chomping at the bit to get going would have been an understatement. I considered this trip a warm-up to my July trip to Philippines/Indonesia. That is a free first class award ticket on AA/JAL that will last roughly 10 days. (Still not enough)

I even installed a countdown on my personalized Google homepage in anticipation of the big event. In fact, all my planned trips this year have such countdowns.



I also purchased an account on ExpertFlyer.com. It shows tons of different information about flights, etc and can really be valuable for checking upgrade or award availability for flights. But I used it check how much Y and J inventory were left for my flight to HKG on Cathay Pacific. The way I saw it, if Y was oversold and the seats were available in J, I might get an op-up (operational upgrade).

On my flight, about two weeks before the trip there were only 7 or so “white” seats. There rest were blocked which I assume were for passengers with tickets, but the seats were not yet assigned. There was also J inventory available on my flight. Here are two screen shots below from FlyerTalk.com (You have to pay to access). This shows CX 883 on 7/10/2006 and it is just an example.





I read on CathayTalk.com (http://www.cathaytalk.com/showthread.php?t=731) that the op-ups go like this:

“Generally your shot at an upgrade will have been predetermined by a ranking system which is locked into the computer system. It runs something like this: CX Diamond, CX Gold, OW Emerald, OW Sapphire, CX Silver, and OW Ruby. If there is anyone left over after that, or the upgrade gods are smiling on you, then you may be in luck... but don't pin your hopes on it. It is preferred if you do NOT ask for an upgrade or you will be placed at the bottom of the list.”

I am OW Sapphire (AA Platinum) so as you can see, I am pretty far down on the food chain. Still, it was fun to check every day and see the seats filling up. But still, I didn’t hold out much hope for an upgrade though. I have flown CX as a OW elite since March of aught 4. Only once, which I think was on my last trip to the Philippines, did I receive an op-up. And that was on the MNL-HKG segment on a 777. Those short haul flights don’t have Cathay’s “New Business Class” which is much nicer and includes lie flat seats.

As the trip started getting closer and closer I was able to start my “pre trip rituals” that I have done for several years now. I won’t bore you with all the details, but it includes the purchase of certain items and a certain overall preparation that also helps pass the time as the BIG DAY approaches. The evening before my flight left, I think there were still two seats in Y available with J inventory available as well

With everything finally out of the way, I made the short journey to LAX and Tom Bradley International Terminal. The ticketing counters had not yet opened when I arrived and already a line was forming for the “cattle class” section. Luckily, I am able to bypass that given my “OW Sapphire” status and go right to Business Class check-in. WooHoo! No line. After about ten minutes or so of waiting for them to open up the line I checked in. I presented my passport and credit card used to purchase the ticket and was issued two boarding passes and an invite the Business Class lounge in Hong Kong. Ok Mr. Xenono, you are in seat 11A today.

A rush of excitement starting coming over me. I thought to myself, “Hey that looks like a blue background on the boarding pass to the side. Hey, 11A. I don’t remember selecting no 11A! I selected some 37G. Hey. Aren’t low numbers when you get bumped up a class in the FRONT of the plane? Did I get just BUMPED UP to J? Did I?”

“Thank you very much,” I replied as I was trying to hold in my excitement and play it cool. “You know where our lounges are,” she asked?

Sure do, thanks again. I put my ticket into my pocket and made toward security. As soon as I was out of site, I ripped open the ticket to double check and make sure my eyes weren’t deceiving me. Yep, it was BUSINESS CLASS BABY! On the long haul flight from LAX to HKG. Sweet! Lie flat seats, champagne, better meals, booze and lots of it, and video on demand. I was excited. Just think, if I was this happy about a free business class upgrade, how happy was I going to be when I finally hit the ground in AC?

I made my way through security and to the lounge. I surfed the web (reading up on Cathay’s new business class seat and making an announcement on CH that I had gotten a J upgrade) for a while and then liquored up a bit. After killing the necessary time I made my way over the gate about an hour before boarding time to line up in the business/first class line.

Upon boarding, I was greeted with the following business class seat.











I watched “Glory Road” on the flight over, had dinner and then pretty much slept most of the way there. The one thing that did suck about this seat was jumping over the person next to me when I had to take a piss, and usually waking him up the process, because his lie flat seat was extended.

But I LOVE the late night departures from LAX on Cathay since they follow a natural sleep cycle and I am usually better able to sleep on the flights. (Especially in lie flat J seats!)

The 15 hour flight to HKG seems a lot shorter when you can sleep for 8 to 10 hours of it. The layover on HKG (love this airport, BTW) was short. Had some cereal and bread in the lounge and then headed to the gate for MNL. Didn’t get an op-up in this flight, but it is only an hour and half from HKG to MNL so who cares.

I understand the arguments for and against hotel private car pickup, but after 24 hours of total travel time (or more) to get from my house to MNL, I am more than willing to fork over the bucks for a private car and not hassle with a bus.

I was back at the RA this time, even though I said I had written it off. I liked the Swiss Chalet a lot. The rooms were nice, but they seem to have a hot water problem and I like to take long showers with the ladies as well as enjoy some shower boom2.

So it was back at RA. The room didn’t stink this time, but the carpet it still shot. Regardless, everyone always remembers me and greets me warmly. After cleaning up, it was time to head out and get laid.

Back to your old tricks I see..lol. Just when I thought you were over your past report habits, it seems that IE has inspired you to write a report about airplane seats....lol.

Re: operational trans-pac upgrades, I know they do exist and why, but I've never had any luck in getting one on China Air (I'm Gold, which is 3rd tier elite with the 1st two tiers reserved for frequent first class flyers). I was batting about 50-50 on China Air for inter-Asia upgrades, and on trips to Bangkok that meant upstairs on a 747 and pretty damned pimp accomodations.

BTW, China Airlines offers your video on demand in standard economy.

I love hearing about the flight plans. My username might imply that. I too spend a lot of time on Flyertalk.com, but I've found United to work best for me. I'm sure I spend more money overall, but every flight is in Business Class upstairs in the 747 even though I buy economy tickets. I even have the same seat every time. I don't like taking a chance on an op upgrade.

Definitely 2-3-2 in business. I have never traveled business on any other airlines, so I can't compare. I haven’t even traveled in AA trans-pacific business. But I was damn impressed with Cathay’s Business Class. I would almost say Cathay's J compares to AA's international F. (AA's coffin seats, not the Flagship Suite. The FS is definitely better and supposedly all AA 777’s will have the FS by aught 8.)

I've heard you mention about the VOD for China. That is definitely cool. Cathay only has it in First and Business. Y is just Studio CX with movies to select, but you have to catch them when they start. Glad you liked the crumbs!

You need to hope your trans-pacific China Air flights are overbooked in Y…

Glad someone likes my details about the flight plan. I know these guys give me shit, but there are some here who don't know about Flyertalk and Expertflyer so I figured I would pass along some advice. I've debated changing to United and Star Alliance for a year now.

Especially since they have SO MUCH BETTER coverage to Asia. But I have too much invested in AA now and with JAL joining Oneworld in early 07, I think I am sticking with AA for now.

With JAL joining Oneworld, I may have to consider a status match to AA. That will depend on my upcoming trip to Colombia. United and Star Alliance is worthless to Colombia, so if I like it a lot, I will have to make some changes.

Day 1

I first headed off to Kokomoz to grab a bite to eat. Saw Dave over at his usual table and when Pete spotted me he came over and told me about the pool party coming up. I decided I didn’t want to be a judge this time around and just bought a regular guest ticket. I renewed some acquaintances with the waitresses and bartenders there and then ordered my usual. After filling my stomach with two SMLs, my usual order and ice cream, I was ready to go fuck.

I walked across the street to Welcome Inn, which has become somewhat of a “first day on the trip tradition” for me. I was looking to get after it pretty quickly and immediately spotted someone who’d do. She had an ok face, but had the body type that I love. You have to go through a security checkpoint to enter the mall, which is really nothing more than a cursory pat down. As I was walking down the main hall once inside, I had one older lady shoving a pamphlet in my face and trying to get me to buy a house.

The mall was extremely nice inside (to be expected since it is brand new) with a decent blend of clothing shops, the SM department store, the really nice Hypermarket Supermarket, an Ace Hardware, the Movietime theater, a couple of video arcades, some nice restaurants (besides Greenwich, ChowKing and Jollibee) and then a CyberZone. I purchased some sunglasses at the SM department store for 100 pesos and took a stroll around the new Hypermarket. Stopped by an eye center and they even had the colored contacts I normally purchase here in the states. In the main courtyard of the mall they have a raised stage for live performances or whatever event they happen to be hosting at the time.

After exploring the mall, I headed out to T Times bar and said hello to my favorite waitress there. Then I headed over to Rio and Nifty’s. Friendship is a north-south road that intersects Perimeter. There is another gate at Friendship and Perimeter to Clark.
Take a trike or jeepney out to Perimeter and just keep going. Tell them Friendship, they will know what you mean.

If your Jeepney stops at Friendship to turn around, simply get out and walk south towards the Friendship Bridge. Jolly Frog is right before you get to the bridge on the west side of the street. It is right across the street from Korean Mart. Most of the businesses in this area seem to be Korean owned.

Before we could even get in the place MongerX was saying hi to a lady at the door. It was someone who he called “Professor Blowjob.” We all went inside. The setup was pretty basic with a stage in the middle of the room. The bar was next to the entrance (if I am recalling correctly.) Day 3
Pool party time! After getting my previous evening’s barfine out of the hotel and cleaning up after a round of morning sex, I headed over the Kokomoz Pool Party. Once again, a no camera policy was in effect and they were using a metal wand to detect cameras at the door.

Day 4

It costs me 190 pisos total to see the movie. We could have paid less and sat downstairs, but I decided it was worth the extra 20 pisos or so to sit upstairs in the stadium seating. It was an early matinee and only about two or three other people were in the theater. Along with the two tickets we were given, I was also given one free pass to come back and see another movie. I didn’t plan on doing this, so I gave the free pass to Miss I.

During the movie I just could not resist myself. During tense or scary portions I turned my head and yelled “ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” while reaching my arms towards her. This of course invoked a jump from her and playful slap back at my arm.

After the movie had concluded we headed over the Congo Grille to grab a little bite to eat. Nice restaurant. All the servers there are dressed up like they are on a safari and the high level of service and attention to detail really impressed me. Food was only decent though. Miss I got some fried chicken. Miss I may be a spinner now, but in two or three more years she is going to be a heifer. I can already see it starting with her ever so slightly. Plus she is always eating fried chicken or fast food like Jollibee or Chowking.

After the movie and lunch she asked me to come back to her apartment. I had never been back to a Filipina’s apartment in all my trips there. The place wasn’t actually that far away. It was east towards the NLE and the apartment building itself seemed fairly new. It had a gate in front and then about 6 units lined a driveway from the gate on each side. Each apartment unit was two stories. The bottom story consisted of a kitchen, shower, and small dinning/living area. The upstairs consisted of two small bedrooms and a bathroom. They had mattresses, but no sheets.
When we got inside she introduced me to her younger sister (18), who also worked at her bar.

They also had like the entire family visiting from province. There were two young boys and another younger sister. They didn’t have air conditioning, although there were holes cut out for them if someone wanted to supply them on their own I guess. I asked Miss I how much a month she paid in rent and she said 6000 pisos.
The place was not run down at all. It was small, but it was modern and well kept. I think I could live there under certain circumstances. I would require air conditioning and a high speed internet connection though.

After about 5 minutes visiting I was bored out of my brain though. It was hot and there really wasn’t anything to do and I didn’t want to hang around a bunch of little kids. So I bid her farewell, said nice to meet the 18 year sister and took off. BTW, her 18 year old sister was HOT. Hotter than Miss I, I must say.

Went back to the hotel and cleaned up. Probably killed some time doing something and then hit a few bars. Then I met a door girl at La Pasha that was very interesting.
