The long night of catch up sleep was just what I needed. I woke up completely refreshed and rejuvenated with no more signs of jet lag. I was confident this one night of sleep was all I needed to be fully adjusted to Bangkok time.
In fact, I went to bed so early the previous night that I was up and about around 7am. And I am never up and about around 7am. You are reading someone who has to be at work each day at 9am and I wake up around 8:15 to 8:30am every day. And I live a half hour away from work! None of the massage parlors open this early so I set out to explore. I came across a foot massage place called White Lotus Massage. It seems to be your typical traditional Thai massage/Oil Massage/Foot Massage place. It is down Soi 10 a little bit and on the right, just past the beer bars. I circled the place a couple of times and there were several girls out in front trying to get me to come inside. I was tempted because I wanted to try a foot massage. I asked where it was and he said in Times Square just a little east on Sukhumvit. Times Square appears to be an office building/mall. The first three to four levels appear to be a mall, but the levels above that (I would guess around 20-30) appear to be office space.
Times Square is located off of Sukhumvit Rd between Soi 12 and 14. The security guard snapped to attention to salute both of us upon entering while simultaneously opening the glass door. There are two internet cafes here. Both are on the second floor. One is .75 baht per minute and the other is 1 baht per minute. The .75 baht per minute café was not open yet so we headed to the 1 baht per minute café. This one faced Sukhumvit Rd and had really good speed despite the cable cut. In fact, it would become my new favorite café for this trip.
So after catching up with a few current events I headed back to the Grand President. I decided, despite the warnings to try and get the DSL access in my room anyway. I called down to the business center to have it installed. They said they would be up at 1pm to install it. 1:30pm rolls around, no one. 1:45pm, no one. Damn. I wanted to get to the Eden Club today when it opened. So much for that.
I called down to the business center to ask why they had not come up to install it. The lady informed me that a cable had been cut between Thailand and the rest of the world (I already knew that) and the speed would be slow, so she didn’t want to install it. Gee thanks. Why did you wait for me to call before telling me that?
