The next morning, I had to pick up my laundry, new clothes and various odd supplies, so I left Spicy to sleep and ran my errands. The shirts required a bit of modification, but I was most pleased with the results. I couldn’t get to the second tailor, but managed to pick up some additional treats to bring home to friends.

Back in the room, Spicy was regaining consciousness. I gave her a good morning “kiss” and we showered. Time for some adventure.

We started walking to the movie theatres near Siam Square. Along the way, near soi zero, a bunch of tuk tuk drivers tried to get us to go with them. More about them in a moment.

Anyone here ever visit soi Zero? It used to be under the highway. I was saddened to see nothing but gravel there now. Absolutely no sign of the score of bars that used to squat beneath the road like some misplaced Scandinavian troll. On the other side of the street, however, is a new entertainment complex. I didn’t have an opportunity to check it out. Anyone here give it a shot?

Anyone check out the new entertainment complex across from the old soi Zero?

Anyway, back to the tuk-tuk thieves. “Too expensive” I shouted at them. They insisted it was not so expensive. I asked how much to Siam Square. I laughed at their answer,. “That’s more than an air-con taxi!” The price immediately dropped to twenty baht. “OK, but we go straight to Siam.”

The driver, naturally, took us to a tailor shop. I refused to leave the tuk tuk. He announced he wanted a hundred baht. “You’ll get the tourist police if you don’t start moving” I sternly replied. Ten minutes later, and twenty baht lighter, we were at the World Trade Center. That’s actually where I wanted to go, so the joke was on the driver who figured I didn’t know where I was.

Picking a movie was not easy. She really wanted to see the historic drama, King Naresuan, that was the talk of the nation, but I sat through the three hour epic a couple days earlier. I quite enjoyed it, but it was not the sort of film I wanted to see a second time, big screen or not. What made matters worse was that the film was showing in every theatre, sometimes on two or three screens. That left very little screen time for other shows.

Funky movie lobby.

I’ve been to high-class clubs that didn’t have bathrooms this nice.

We settled on some movie and I splurged for a couch seat at the back. What a civilized way to see a film! Spicy was a bit chilly so she was wrapped around me during the film. Afterward, we headed over to MBK, where we found the video game parlor. I was surprised that a Japanese drum game would be such a big hit (wink, wink), but it was really popular.

Spicy bangs away!

We wandered around there for a bit, then walked to Siam Afterward, I asked her what she wanted to do. She had no suggestions so we wandered over to the other new movie complexes. Bangkok is the theatre capital of the world! I was pleased to note that it had an Imax screen. Spicy had never seen one, so it was movie number two for the night, Deep Sea 3D.

Another high-end lobby.

Next, it was time to check e-mail. I wanted Spicy to access her account so we could correspond after I left. Unfortunately, she did not remember her password. I tried to set her up with a new account, but only then discovered she could not read English. Oh, well.

We went back to Nana and had some seafood on soi five. It was back to the hotel and another night of shenanigans.

The new entertainment complex has been there for a while, it has a couple of floors with bars containing plenty of pool tables, there`s a short time hotel there, and even a late night to early morning disco on the first floor, the girls are OK, and you may meet an ex bargirl from soi zero, not a bad place, i always give it a visit when am in BKK.

The late night disco on the top floor (originally Josephine's, then Black and White) has closed. The soi 1 complex is generally pretty dead, even on weekends. You might find the occasional gem there, but it seems to be an area that never really took off as initially hoped.

Manos.

The complex beneath the highway was called soi Zero (or sometimes Buckskin Joe's). It was build right beneath the overpass! Very good use of otherwise wasted space if you ask me.

There were maybe a dozen little bars, some quite homey, with girls who were more interesting than attractive. In December, the bar area was nothing but gravel. It's the third bar area I've seen vanish in the past five years.

Across the street from the old soi Zero is a relatively new complex. That's the one in the photo above. I didn't investigate as I had Spicy in tow.
