I went to Cartagena the long way as I live in San Diego and it is an airport that still hasnt gotten its shit together so I usually have to fly out of LAX. I was able to obtain a ticket for around $450 but the flight was LAX-Houston-Panama City and finally Cartagena. I left at 1am thinking I could sleep on the flight but each flight was short so no dice there. Next time I will fly San Diego-Houston route if possible and try to get miles via Continental for Eva. Copa has cheap and more direct routes so I might use that way next time.

Arrived at 4pm and my luggage did not arrive. First time this has happened to me and I it sucks speaking Spanish to a air rep Costena who has such a strong accent that she is difficult to understand. They wouldnt deliver my luggage the next day to my apartment so I had to take a taxi the next day and wait 2 hours to get my luggage. Not sure what I can get from Continental or Copa here but it really fucked up the beginning of my trip. I arrived at my apartment at the Sol de Caribe building and the manager of the room was not there and had to wait an hour. By the time I settled in and waited for the maids to clean the room, it was 7pm and I hadnt slept in over 35 hours. I knew I didnt have any clothes to wear to the discos and didnt want to wear dirty clothes after taking a shower so I just went to sleep and woke up the next day at 9am for a 13 hour sleep(I usually sleep 6 hours). I found the place on www.colombiarental.net and it is room #803.

I was a dumbass as put my ATM and credit cards in my luggage as well as hid some travelers checks there as well. Had some cash on me and had to go to BanColombia to exchange some money. Understand that cash is absolutely shit here and you need to show your passport and get fingerprinted just to exchange cash. Any bills that even have a tiny tear or mark will not be cashed. Of the 5 $100 bills I had, only one did not have some sort of stamp or slight tear and I was only able to cash out $100 until getting my luggage later that night. The rate was aweful at 1,839 and traveler's checks were going for 2,016 pesos. The most bizarre exchange system I have ever seen. If you go to Colombia dont bring cash, just TC's and ATM cards. Lesson learned.

Finally went to Hollywood Beach and Tony the tout spotted me and put me in one of his chairs with an umbrella. For those of you that have dealt with the guy, you know that he is a total ripoff in many things but a great asset as well so you have to take the good with the bad and minimize his small scams. He will overcharge for 9-11,000 pisos for a days use of his chairs and gazebo or umbrella and will try to nickel and dime you for extra chairs and stuff. He will get girls for you then charge outrageous prices for Cuba Libre's and orange juice as some sort of lady drink for 10-12,000 pisos a pop. Ask before how much each thing costs as he will just make it up as he goes. If he sees you are monitoring things, he will cut back on his scams but if he sees you dont care, he try all tricks possible. I saw a few Italian mongers arguing with him about overcharging. He will also add extra drinks that werent there or ask you to buy him drinks for which he doesnt drink or takes money and doesnt order it. He gets a different cut from each girl he gives you which drives up their price. Best bet is to let him set you up in the beginning and then just contact the girls directly. He charges the new girls up to 30,000 cut. He lies that he doesnt get a cut and then constantly asks for a tip. I called him on it twice and he still griped but thats the way of the local Costenos, especially ones that look like Tony.

I had contacted Merlin before about hooking up with Tatiana. Didnt have a SIM card yet but the first girl Tony sat next to me was Tatiana and her sister. Tatiana was actually sick that day and came with her sister. I had to get to the airport by 4pm so we just hung out and got to know each other. Nearly all the apartments with this owner have the same crappy vinyl couches with cardboard backing that you see so common in Mexico. I spent more time in the bedroom as it had a 26 inch LCD flat screen on the wall and a comfortable bed with real springs. Cost was $60 per night.
