I make a first visit to Surabaya, arriving xmas day for two nights. My first night was a disastrous washout and the second day marked by three exceptional sessions. It was a short visit in which I visited Dolly two nights, visited a top end daytime place called Simponi once, and also scouted out some other venues. I am not going to try and post a comprehensive write up of the travel nuts and bolts, as they are well documented by more qualified and better writers than myself. But here is a summary my accommodations, transport, internet etc…. My wingman and I arrived at the SUB airport on Xmas day. Nice thing about Indonesia, Xmas holiday has no impact on the mongering. SUB airport is small but modern. We arrived on a flight from Jakarta so only had to claim baggage. After baggage, claim we seeked out the KAHA hotel reservation counter and booked the Sahid Hotel for $255K and night with one breakfast ($1 = 9300 IDR.) The Sahid is an older 3* but clean property next to a train station and walking distance to Surabaya. It’s not a hotel too get excited about but serviceable. I did enjoy the canal side view room I had.

As for transportation, taxis are plentiful and seem to have no problem running the meter. Traffic will seem like nothing if you are coming from Jakarta. The exception for using a metered taxi is getting from the airport to your hotel. Here your only option seemed to be to purchase a voucher from the Prima taxi counter. The price was 70K to the Sahid. This was about the same price as taking a meter taxi back to the airport from the hotel for our departure. From the hotel to Dolly was about a 20 minute ride and cost about 20K, and to Tujungan Plaza and other downtown location costs around 8-10K.

A short taxi ride from our hotel is the HUGE upmarket Tujungan Plaza Mall. I am not one much for mall cruising but this a nice place to grab a reasonable priced decent meal and check out some very gorgeous Indonesian Chinese eye candy, I fell in love several times in my afternoon visit. The mall seemed well stocked with all kinds of Asian and Western food options. From a quick survey, you can expect to drop $3-5 for a meal here. Both nights we ended up feasting at the Hamanasa next to Sahid. This is an all you can eat Japanese/Korean style Shabu Shabu/ BBQ place. I have been underwhelmed by previous visits to other Hamanasa branches, but this one was excellent and cost each of us 80K. For good cheap meals there are all kinds of the usual warung types of places in the streets. Unfortunately it was raining our whole stay and I didn’t get to sample the street fares.

While almost all the infrastructure was decent, the one thing lacking is good internet access (what a surprise in Indonesia --- Not!) The internet cafes in TJ Plaza were the absolute pits and unusable. What I have resorted to for the most part in Indonesia is to surf using my Nokia E61 and GPRS. I recommend that you get an Mentari 3G (Indostat) sim card, rather than the usually recommended Simpati (Telkomsel.) Mentari is a lot cheaper and your pulsa (prepaid phone credits) will go much farther especially since the majority of girls will use Mentari as well. When you load your card with pulsa you will get a bunch of free SMS you can use to text other Mentari users. As for using the GPRS to surf the internet, when you buy your sim you will get a pamphlet that tells you how to register your sim card (which you must do in order to make calls) and will also tell you how to set up GPRS. If you are lucky the pamphlet will be have English translations, if not have the clerk help you. Now what’s surprising is that the GPRS connection (especially if you get a 3G connection) is much better than most internet café connections. However, it will cost a fortune if you download binary documents and images. Make sure you turn off the load images option on your phone browser. Once you are not loading images it will almost seem like checking your e-mail and surfing is free, and it won’t be painfully slow. At the internet café my buddy was still waiting for his yahoo e-mail account to open after 15 minutes while I had already responded to four e-mails from my G-mail account.

At this point you are probably wondering if I am gonna talk about the mongering at all? OK let’s get to what you really want to hear about. The main purpose of our visit was to check out Dolly. Dolly is purported to be one of the biggest Red Light Districts in SE Asia, a stretch of brothel after brothel loaded with young sexy girls willing to rock your world for paltry sums of 50K – 120K. On the internet I had read reports about the talent level of Dolly stating that “over forty percent of the girls were of fuckable grade”, and that “only the top 10% of the Jakarta Kota girls exceeded what you would find in dolly.” On the other hand some of my personal friends had checked out Dolly reported only finding a handful of fuckables out of the hundreds available. I had decided I better find out for myself. Also I had received divergent reports on the quality of the sex one got in Dolly, internet reports stated that Dolly girls made Jakarta Kota girls seem like mercenary mechanical pros, and my friends reported that it was really hit or miss like the cheap brothels of Cambodia. Obviously I needed to check this out for myself.

I gotta say it was far from love at first sight for Dolly and I. We arrived on Xmas night around 10:30 PM. Our taxi dropped us off at the point where Jalan Girilaya turns into Jalan Jarak, also at this point Jalan Dolly branches off to the left forming a Y. There are a few booking houses on Grilaya before you get to the Y, but the majority of the houses run for two to three long street blocks up both Jalan Dolly and Jerak.

After touring the main brothel area (and a couple of alleys with very limited action) I was quite underwhelmed with the size of the place. I really expected a much bigger place. I would say the size of the area was comparable to say Soi 6 in Pattaya. Overall I would say there were 400 girls in around 50 shops at most.

Regretfully I report IMHO say that the MO of searching and picking the girl is the worst I have found in Indonesia. Basically you walk up the narrow street and you can see anywhere from 3 to 10 girls sitting on sofas. Each of these houses has at least a couple of male touts outside. These guys will grab, poke, and put their arms around you in an effort to coax you to go in and look at the stock of the house. Once you step inside or up to the window you will see a group of the mostly disinterested and sometimes hostile girls. I speak pretty decent Indonesia and I was getting practically zero interaction from the girls. Usually my mojo is good in Indonesia and everywhere I get people joking and laughing with me. Any remaining desire was extinguished by the quality of the girls. Almost every girl came from Malang, Semerang, or Banyuwangi. I gotta say I got off to a rough start in Surabaya and Dolly in particular. But there is no arguing with a day with 2 exceptional and 1 top shelf sessions. However, a true indication of how I really feel about the place, I have already booked a flight to return one weekend later in January. These looked like a great place to spend several hours during the day in a semi luxurious environment and get a good massage from a cute girl all for 100-200K. Also there were lots of traditional massage places offering straight massage for 40-50K per hour.

If you wanted a monger holiday and only had a $100 a day budget, I am not sure you could find a better place than Surabaya. Unless you are the type who has to absolutely sleep with a chick. You can get a decent hotel for under $30 a day. You can easily eat well for under $10 a day, and allow $10 for taxi. That leaves you $50 to easily get three great screws in Dolly, or two screws and a good massage with change for beers if you like. Expand you budget a little bit, and mix in a Simponi and/or Disco visit and you are living good for around 120-130 a day. As of right now I still far prefer Jakarta or Changping (but having to spend 175-200 a day in those locations) but Surabaya has made its mark and is a higher priority than all other locations. Obviously my conclusions about Surabaya are preliminary, likely wrong, and in need of further investigation. I will get on that right away!

Wnose, LOL it's always a dilema when checking out a new venue. Stick with a known commodity or force yourself to take the risk and to sample different outlets. I want to file an update following a second trip to Surabaya last weekend.

- This time I flew directly from Singapore to Surabaya, using Valuair. International arrival was quite easy as very few people on this flight needed to go to Visa-On-Arrival counter. However, I got a bit of a shock when leaving Surabaya as the airport fee for International Flights from SUB is a whopping 150K.

- At the Kaha desk I was disappointed to find that most of my hotel choices were booked up for the weekend. So I decided to try the Novotel which doesn’t have a lot around it, and is about a 15-20K taxi ride to Tunjungan Plaza and Dolly. However, I did get an “upgrade” to one of their one bedroom apartments in the service apartment tower. This was 375K a night. I got say that Novotel is a really cool property. It really feels like a tropical resort and has a gorgeous large free form swimming pool surrounded by lovely tropical landscaping in the center courtyard. There was free wifi in the lobbies, and the breakfast was cheap and good. The apartment was a bit dated but actually would be a real nice setup for a longer stay. As it had a little living room, small kitchenette with refrigerator microwave etc… and also had large windows and a small terrace overlooking the pool and lobby area. I am quickly coming to the conclusion that Surabaya was very limited daytime mongering venues and the great amenities to enjoy during the day make this a decent place to stay, despite the poor location.

- I spent the afternoon of my one full day chasing down leads I got from various forums on venues to get full service for under 300K. I first tried PP Bella (Jalan Pucang Adi No 103A) in a quiet residential neighborhood. Here it was reported one could find massage and FS all for 150K. I walked in and there were about 15 very friendly ladies, who were very animated at what must have been a rare bule sighting. After having to rather two uninspired sessions with hard bodied cewek, I needed to be worshipped. So I went with my seeming new regular here and took her for a two hour session. Just wanted to report my experiences in sub. I had a small sample size of 3 (2 dolly, 1 simponi) but got really really great service....above and beyond what i typically would find in batam or jakarta.

btw in sub, I was surprised to have recognized former working gals i had meet in either btm or jkt...one was from la bar, one was from formosa in batam. there were 2 others from btm that i couldn't place.

Well, your pics are rapidly convincing me that maybe I shoulda been keen on heading to Surabaya after all! Especially the two from Dolly for a total of less than 20 bucks? NICE!!!

Also, as I'm sure you could have guessed, looks like the 1st girl had a REALLY big rack. I wouldn't be able to tell from the pic with her shirt on, though. You are certainly an expert at massive rack expeditions!

Great information MX and thanks for sharing your experience and pics. For an occassional Indonesian mongering tourist with a few days to spare – would you recommend to stick with Jakarta or other popular tourist destinations, Bali, Batam, etc. Would Sub offer enough daytime activities besides mongering to keep one interested for a few days? I know Jakarta has a plenty of things that one can keep oneself occupied during the daytime and even at night there are a plenty of discos and other venues to be entertained. I guess what I am asking is would Sub be a good destination for someone like me who likes to do other things besides mongering when visitng Indonesia.

PhD, You already know what Jakarta has to offer.

As for Surabaya I didn't see much to do culturally during the day. There are a couple of extremely comfortable, large, modern malls to explore. The most important "fossil hunting' activities are built around military monuments and sites, as this was were the Indonesians started their war for independence from the Dutch. Also, is an old arab and chinatown section, which has not been gentrified nor has developed tourist infrastructure. Probably interesting stuff be seen, but you will have to work at it. I haven't made it to the Discos there yet, but from what infer from the comments of others they are probably comprable to Jakarta local discos and well below the Batam discos from the meat market perspective. I would say that if the down market brothel zone, which has yet beennspoiled by the white penis, is something you like, Surabaya should actually be a real high priority destination. The price and service are off the charts good. But if that scene turns you off, don't bother with Surabaya as things are really quite limited outside Dolly. For me I can't see spending more than two or three nights there at a stretch.

If mongering is of low importance and culture/beach are what you are looking forward, go straight to Bali. I think Bali is one of the best vacation spots ever. It's the only place I have been were I was overcome with a feeling that this is a place I could happily spend the rest of my life (outside of Kuta that is!) The real downside is that the mongering is like 4 for 5 levels below Jakarta in quality. I have only checked out the FL bar scene along Jalan Legian and it was filled with girls I would classify as Blok M rejects. It was not a pretty sight. I have never been over to check out the Sanur brothels were daytime action is available, but I have not heard good things. If somehow a Kota P4P scene was available in Bali, it would be MX heaven.

Batam, unfortunately have been swirling the toilets ever since they closed the casinos there a few years ago. It's very hard to find attractive girls now. There are some positives though, the price of LT is great and the girls seemed to expect getting pounded three the mattress as often as you can muster. So if you aren't picky about looks and picky about speding lots of money it's great. Also, there is a large freelancer scene, there are some western oriented bars filled with bule chasers who know how to take care of business. Also, the local Discos, Pacific and Planet, are the two absolute best FL meat market discos scenes I have ever been too. But you have to expect the really dark and loud environment. Also try to avoid the clutches of the aggressive bule chasers prowling around the relatively well lit entrances and bars, and inside you kind find some real gems. Overall Batam has a small town feel to it, and the routine there is quite fun. Also, In Batam fun and crazy shit just seems to happen more often than in other places. However, since the talent level has dropped I would recommend it other than a quick side trip from Singapore. In fact, I almost never go there and instead opt for the short flight over to Jakarta despite Jakarta being much more expensive.

BTW, re the take out question: I was told 400K in Moresheng (w/o bargaining) and the one time I asked at Dolly (for the superperformer) an initial quote of 900K! It was brought down to 700K and I passed to my regret but I thought it was just too much.

I agree that Surabaya really has nothing to offer daytime. I would also add that great times were to be had in the small bars with the local band in Dolly. Some of the singers were really hot! And the waitresses in those places are available as well...
