Day 3

The next day - Thursday - was the day of our planned Centro termas run, which required us to be in a cab or the metro headed downtown no later than 3pm. This way, we not only would beat the crowd to 4x4 and avoid the inevitable "swordfight" to come later, but also have time for an ambitious circuit of termas 85, 113 Rua Buenos Aires, Cancun, and boite Florida. But as usual, I couldn't seem to extricate myself from my previous night's company when required - leading to a later than planned beach arrival, and putting us way behind schedule when we finally hoofed it to the Copa metro station around 6pm.

At first, the metro seemed mellow enough. But with each successive stop, more and more people would get on - and NO ONE was getting off. Pretty soon, it was packed wall-to-wall - with people practically fighting their way to get into the cars - and no security people to be seen anywhere. Finally, we'd had enough, and battled our way off of the subway one stop short of where we originally intended to get off to hit our first stop - termas 4x4.

We walked about eight more blocks, and for the first time it hit me just how major a metropolis Rio really is, with a mature and highly developed downtown area. There's much more to it than just a couple of famous beaches. Fortunately, RM was familiar enough with the terrain that we didn't need to refer further to the maps that I had copped off of the ISAW-DB sight that Witling had posted about a few weeks earlier, and we found our way to the entrance of 4x4 by around 6:30.
