Timing
I was in Vientiane:
February 7 - February 10 (4 nights)
Statistics
During my 4-day stay in Vientiane, I had:
ST: 0
LT: 2
Girls: 2
Not exactly impressive stats. Things didn’t really work out for me...
Nightclubs
General
Most of the nightclubs in Vientiane are in hotels. They usually have live music. Pretty girls sing Lao/Thai pop music, with an occasional switch to Western music.
The nightclubs typically open around 8 PM. They all close at midnight, but may stay open a little longer on busy nights.
When single males walk in, the mamasan or captain will be quick to ask them if they want company. They can bring girls to your table, but you’re likely to get lumbered with a fugly. And the nightclubs are too dark to properly ascertain a girl’s beauty.
Always ask to be shown the fishbowl! They have bright lights and you can pick your own girl!
When a girl sits with you, she’ll probably drink whatever you’re drinking. Some girls may order a soft drink instead. There are no special ladies drinks, so her drinks are the same price as yours.
Girls earn a sitting fee of 10000 LAK / hour to keep you company. The sitting fee is waived if you end up taking the girl home.
The girls are available for take-out. Most nightclubs also have ST rooms. Typical prices are 1000-1500 THB ST and 2000-3000 THB LT.
Anou Cabaret
Location
- Thanon Heng Boun
- Close to the corner with Thanon Chao Anou
The Anou Cabaret is inside the Anou Hotel. When I visited this popular nightclub late on Chinese New Year, the pretty birds had flown. If you get there earlier, the place has a large and high quality selection, second only to the nightclub at the Mekong Hotel.
Etoile Nightclub
Location
- Thanon Chanta Khumman
- Associated with the Hotel Ekalath Metropole on the corner with Thanon Samsenthai.
- Not inside the hotel, but further down the street, in the direction of That Dam (Black Stupa).
This nightclub is even darker than most and only had a handful of hostesses when I visited.
Inter City Hotel Nightclub
Location
- Thanon Fa Ngum
- Close to the corner with Thanon Chao Anou.
The Inter Hotel (as it was called then) is where I spent my first night in Vientiane a decade ago. The nightclub downstairs was the scene where I met my first Lao girl. On this trip, I wanted to check out Bor Pen Nyang next-door and neglected to ask if the nightclub was still open.
Lane Xang Hotel Nightclub
Location
- Thanon Pangkham
- Not inside the Lane Xang hotel!
- As you walk out of the hotel, turn right and the nightclub is just around the corner.
According to the girl I talked to, many of the hostesses have moved to more popular nightspots. But I did notice a couple of real cuties walking around. Since they open early (6 PM), it may be a good spot to look for an early evening ST.
Mekong Hotel Nightclub
Location
- Thanon Luang Prabang
- About 1,5 km from the center of town.
This extremely popular nightclub has both the largest and the best selection in town. Unlike in other nightclubs, where the mamasans often prefer to bring (ugly) girls to your table, you’ll immediately be escorted to the fishbowl. Feast your eyes on a dazzling display of beauty queens and pick a winner! The top place in town... by a long way!
Saysana Hotel Nightclub
Location
- Thanon Chao Anou
- Close to the corner with Thanon Setthathirat.
The nightclub at the Saysana Hotel is closed!
Discos
General
While the nightclubs close at midnight, discos are allowed to stay open until 2 AM... unless the cops show up! The disco freelancers charge rates similar to the nightclub girls.
Don Chan Palace Hotel
Website
- http://www.donchanpalacelaopdr.com
Location
- Don Chan Island, in the middle of the Mekong River.
The disco, officially called Lunar 36, is on the 3rd floor. The 30.000 LAK cover charge includes one drink. The disco is rather small, with a minimalistic décor, using oil barrels as tables. There is no separate dance floor.
When I showed up at 11 PM, the place was almost deserted. But there were a handful of girls already, so at least the male/female ratio was good! The place starts filling up around midnight and gets really crowded. In the end, the male/female ratio was horrible, with most of the competition being half my age.
I noticed many girls walking in with boyfriend in tow. I didn’t think of it at the time and arrived too early to witness it, but I figure many girls wait outside for a sponsor to pay their cover charge. When I approached groups of unattached girls, I struck out. In the end, I stole someone else’s girl!
Novotel Hotel
Location
- Thanon Luang Prabang
- About 2km from the city center.
- The discos are down an alley just past the Novotel Hotel.
There are actually 2 discos, called HighWayMan Karaoke & Disco & Future Music. When I showed up at half past midnight on my final night in town, I spotted cops across the street. The alley was deserted and both discos were closed.
Freelancer Hangouts
Bor Pen Nyang
Location
- Thanon Fa Ngum
- Next to the Inter City Hotel.
- Close to the corner with Thanon Chao Anou.
This rooftop bar is very popular with the expat crowd. There were a few freelancers around, but the male/female ratio was dreadful. Even ugly girls were hit on almost as soon as they walked in!
Music House
Location
- Thanon Fa Ngum
- Close to the corner with Thanon Manthatulat.
This place wasn’t open yet as I walked past on my final night. A sign stating that minors weren’t allowed looked promising. I’m not sure how to categorize the place, but I think it’s a safe bet that there are girls on offer.
Samlo Pub
Location
- Thanon Setthathirat
- Opposite Wat In Paeng.
The first time I popped my head inside, there was nothing but guys. As I walked home at 1 AM on my final night, there were a few girls. Over the hill old hags!
Wind West Pub
Location
- Thanon Luang Prabang
- Not far past the corner with Thanon Khun Bulom.
The Wind West Pub was still open on a night when the Novotel discos were closed earlier than advertized. Peeking through the door, I spotted foreigners and local girls, so the place is definitely a pick-up spot with freelancers. Unfortunately, the door was bolted shut!
KTV
Lao Plaza Hotel
Location
- Thanon Samsenthai
- Close to the corner with Thanon Pangkham.
The plush Lao Plaza hotel has a KTV with hostesses. You need a posse to visit a KTV. And I can’t stand bloody karaoke!
Mekong Hotel
Apart from the nightclub, the Mekong Hotel also has KTV rooms (on the 2nd floor).
Streetwalkers
A decade ago, there were plenty of streetwalkers in Vientiane, especially around the Fountain Circle. On this trip, I only spotted streetwalkers on Thanon Setthathirat. And they were all ladyboys!
Observations
Prices
As Laos is one of the poorest countries in the world, you might expect P4P to be dirt cheap. But even a decade ago, Lao girls were pretty expensive for the region. As prostitution is illegal in communist Laos, I guess you’re paying danger money. Demand exceeding supply also drives prices up.
Timeframe
The action starts late (around 8 PM) and finishes early (midnight – 2 AM). The limited timeframe makes it challenging to fuck multiple girls a day. If things don’t work out with a girl, you may not be able to find a suitable replacement.
Au Revoir
After 4 days in Vientiane, I traveled back to Bangkok to meet up with Bwana Dik. But I wasn’t ready to leave. I wanted to explore more venues. I wanted to fuck more girls. Noy and Dta-wun’s performance tasted like more...
Final Words
Laos is relatively expensive. The limited timeframe is a hindrance. Yet Vientiane had a certain je ne sais quoi that made me want to stay...

great info in this post.
I find that in a country were prostitution is illegal, it seems to be expensive no matter how poor that country is.

It's also technically illegal for a Lao girl to have sex with a foreigner. So if they're caught in your room the bribes/penalties can be fierce.
This is generally not enforced, but used as an ace up the sleeve by the Lao PDR govt (eg, if they want to kick out an expat they dont want in the country) or a shakedown threat.
Great comprehensive report, thanks.
