Prelude
After being unable to find motorcycle girls that were great performers, I finally struck gold in the Hai Ba Trung bars. Both Thuy and Lieu were absolutely wonderful and provided the perfect GFE.
I did some additional research and made a list of places I still wanted to check out. But unless I found another winner tonight, my 6th day in Ho Chi Minh City would be my last...
Pham Ngu Lao Bars
Li Li Bar
Hai Ba Trung is the main area for hostess bars, but the backpacker area also harbors a few such establishments.
The Li Li bar had less than 10 girls, and the quality was a notch below the better Hai Ba Trung bars. The prettiest of the bunch was My. When I bought her a drink, she was soon French kissing me. A great sign! Since I wanted to check out a few more places tonight, I told My I wanted to go and eat. She urged me to come back after dinner. “What are we gonna do when I come back?” “More drinks and kisses”. Not the answer I was looking for!
Rivev’s
Rivev’s only had 4 girls when I peeked inside. One of them was sitting with a customer. None of them were attractive. I didn’t stay.
Guns ‘n Roses
Guns ‘n Roses is supposed to be a late night place to meet freelancers, but it was deserted every time I walked past. Guess I was never late enough...
Volcano
As I hated Gossip on my first night in town, I hadn’t visited another disco. Time to give it another shot...
Volcano is an upscale techno disco, very close to the backpacker area. The male/female ratio on the dance floor was better than in Gossip. I counted about a dozen unattached females, encouraging foreigners to approach them. But the quality wasn’t very high...
Volcano didn’t have the supermodel regular girls I spotted in Gossip. None of the working girls were stunners. But since I visited Gossip on a Saturday and Volcano on a slow Thursday night, I may be comparing apples and pears. Anyway, I didn’t hook up with anyone.
Hold the Thief!
As I was entering notes on my phone, a guy on a motorcycle drove by and snatched the phone right out of my hand!
Apocalypse Now
As I entered Apocalypse Now after midnight, the place was extremely crowded. I soon spotted a few true beauties, but they all seemed to be with local guys (or other Asians). A couple of the foreigners had pretty girls too, but the overall quality was pretty low. The girls were definitely older than the average Hai Ba Trung bar girl.
The pickings are slim to begin with. Arriving late, there were no unattached girls I fancied taking home. As I sat outside and surveyed the scene, I noticed most foreigners left alone. Demand is way higher than supply at Apocalypse Now!
Epilogue
I walked back to my hotel and bought some food along the way. As I wanted to set my alarm, I realized I no longer had a phone. I asked hotel reception for a wake-up call, but they forgot. Luckily, I'd set an alarm on my iPod. I was outta here... minus my phone.

Loso, I remember you telling me this story a few days later in Phnom Penh. You were going shopping for a new phone after we parted. I'm curious to know about selection and prices in PP. Did you end up getting a new one there or in Thailand?

i think the best way to check the disco scene in saigon is take a hai ba trung girl with you. that way you can recon and return another night if you find a good place (and my bet is you won't be returning because you won't find a good one).

Loso, isn't it funny how five minutes can fuck up your whole trip or change your opinion of a place?
I got pick pocketed in B.A. a few years ago and every time some one brings up that city, being ripped off is the first thing that comes to mind.
Thx for all the great advice I am heading to Vietnam in November so any info is a great help.

FlyNGo,
They sell all the latest models in the multitude of phone shops around the New Market in PP. I bought a Nokia N95 8GB for 640 USD. The cheapest places to buy a phone in Asia are Cambodia & the Philippines.
Isawai,
Shit happens! But the first thing that comes to mind when I think about HCMC isn't my phone. It's Thuy! I would have gone back for her the next day... if I hadn't met Lieu in Cali.

Loso, why the hell are you taking US $640 phones on mongering trips. I got a US $19.95 Virgin Mobile (qualcomm) phone in USA at TARGET that does every thing I need a cell phone to do. What I want for short trips to mongerville is a similar disposable. Use a tiny digital voice recorder for trip notes and transcribe later.
