Taking a giant SLR to a brothel is going to scare away 99.9% of the girls from any country. By doing that, you are taking away a huge pool of girls. I love your photography and enjoy the effort you put out but this MO will not work in Indonesia. If a girl sees professional equipment at her own brothel, then she is 99% sure the photos will end up on the net or in some sort of publication...and she would be right.

Having her come to your room and using an SLR is not a problem, but thats a lot harder to do in JKT.

I carry my camera in a little backpack. The girls have no idea what kind of camera I'll be using when they agree to pictures in the bar.

I've never had an adverse reaction to my big, professional camera in Indonesia. On the contrary, when I show the girls their pictures, they often go: "Wow!" A girl saying: "Is that me?" is the biggest compliment a photographer can get. Making the girls look good encourages them to take more pictures. Giving the girls a CD (or DVD) with their pictures is another stimulus.

BTW, I know a few professional photographers who also happen to be mongers. They take the most amazing pictures of the girls... but never publish them.

Many thoughts to share here. First off, like Loso, I ask all the time about kissing. I've encountered many Thais, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Indonesians who won't kiss. It is a standard part of the interview, and if they don't do it, I don't pull the trigger (at least if I am in a situation where language allows this to be conveyed, which isn't always the case - such as in China, where it's potluck).

On the other side of the coin, in my experience, I would have to disagree about Travel being the least friendly joint for bules in Kota. I have had many great successes there, and you are the first person I've ever seen make such a statement about the place. Most all of the girls act disinterested, as if they wouldn't give you the time of the day. It's part of the protocol, so to speak. But the majority warm up nicely once the selection has been made. The ones who are giving you the serious bule stinkface are the ones who really don't want to go with you.

Blazers may be right on this one - it is quite possible that your camera freaked her out. She could have been fresh off the kampong, and quite easily spooked by a big camera, your insistence on photos, and stories she has heard about the internet - especially if you were her first bule customer.

Agree with Murasaki about Travel, I've had a few incredible experiences there. Yes, most of the girls were disinterested, putting on their makeup and such (I liked to get there early). Re: the girl "canceling" a session, I hope you got your money back? The true redeeming factor of Indo brothels is that the customer is THE BOSS.

Hotel Travel and many Indo brothels are both easy "point and click" brothels and tough nuts to crack if the girl thinks you're an easy mark. I've heard from the master that Travel gets more foreigner mongers there, and my personal experience is that the girls have relatively bad attitudes too. Maybe all the foreigners they see there make them think they're in charge? Experts like Mx can easily set them straight or pass on them if he gets a bad vibe.

Hotel Travel has a termas-like system these days. You're given a bracelet when you walk in and pay your bill (girls & drinks) when you check out. I wasn't charged for the canceled session with Elsa.

I've only been to Hotel Travel once and had an average session, nothing to write home about but nothing to really complain about. I got a few photos of the girl clothed.

What I liked about the place more than anything was that the facilities were a couple of steps up from the other Kota bars I visited, without much extra cost. But from what I'm reading here, it sounds like I'll have to do some more research in the near future to clear up the confusion.
