Santo Domingo and the North Coast – New Year’s Week 2003
BACKGOUND
I am currently working in the Caribbean. Due to my client’s holiday schedule I found myself with New Year’s week free. I decided that the Dominican Republic offered the best opportunity to pursue a variety of interests. I had been to the DR once before for a weekend and in general liked the little I had seen of Santo Domingo. After conversing with several knowledgeable sources, I decided to stay a few days in Santo Domingo, drive up to the north coast for a few days, and return for a last day in Santo Domingo.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND THANKS
A lot of guys supplied info that made this trip more enjoyable. I appreciate that they took the time to either correspond with me or post information that was helpful. The people who most quickly come to mind, in no particular order, are Woolf (XtremeTravel), Bogey (XtremeTravel), TightFit (Club Hombre), excat (at large), RTGooch (Club Hombre), Estaban (Club Hombre), and Headhunter2000 (wsgforum).
A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER
I made this trip during a major holiday week. This time chose me. I figured that the DR would be less impacted by girls going home for the holidays than some other locales, such as Costa Rica, and another motivator was that if I stayed in the Caribbean the plane fare was gratis. I believe that I was right about the girls, particularly with regard to Santo Domingo, but things were still a little slow. This probably affected my impressions.
I speak fair Spanish. I don’t drink or do drugs or knowingly associate with persons who do the later. This enables me to do things that others might be better off avoiding. When I cover driving suggestions, please carefully consider if you should be operating a motor vehicle in these locales. The roads are not up to US standards, although the ones in DR are good. Some of the locals, as Mike McCloud once sang about Key West, consider drinking to be a sport. You’re here to have a little fun, don’t ruin somebody’s life or your own. Let’s be a little careful out there.
A FEW DAYS (INCLUDING NEW YEAR’S EVE) IN SANTO DOMINGO
I stayed at the Napolitano. It was not a bargain at $90 a night (holiday rate). I have gotten the name of another place on Independencia that costs half as much and will probably use it in the future. Only problem with the new place is that the spillover rooms look like “Crime and Punishment” may have been written there. Still I have had it with the racket at the Napolitano. I hear that the Inter-Continental costs $150 and the Jaragua has a no guest policy. Life is tough.
Speaking of the Jaragua, I stopped by to check out the free lancers my first night. There were about 8 of them, but none got my interest. The following night (New Year’s Eve) there were none present. I assume management decided to keep them out while the upper crust attended their party. I like stopping in the Jaragua to start an evening. They have a good coffee bar, you can watch 6 NBA games at the same time, and it’s fun to watch the people come and go. Usually the salsa bar is lively and you can see if there is a free lancer that gets your motor running.
Shortly after arriving in SD, I went to Monalissa (their spelling) to get the travel kinks taken out. I walked by where “Tu Estetica 2000” was reported to be, but it looked like they went out of business. The girl at Monalissa was great. This made two for two at this place for me. I paid 1200 DRP for full service and gave her a well deserved tip of 300 as well. They initially high balled me for $100 US, but I explained that I knew better and we got on with things. O btw, the girl used to live in Buenos Aires and visit Copa from time to time. You could see the area influence on her style.
I got caught in the rain on the walk back. A girl in front of one of the restaurants on George Washington (La Gran Delicia ?) asked me in to sit down just as a friendly gesture. She was genuinely nice to el gringo mojado, so I ordered the Mero. It was pretty good for a little off the wall place. The owner or manager stopped by later to ask if everything was ok. Nice people. Decent enough chow at a good price. I spent well under 200 including tip.
Later on after checking out the Jaragua I went to Remington Palace. I had never been here before and wanted to give it a look. The eye candy level was not anywhere near what I had read about. This was probably due to the holiday factor. I met a cutie from Puerto Plata and took her back to the hotel for short time at 1500 DRP (plus drinks, plus taxis, plus a small propiña for trying hard). It was an ok experience, but nothing special. In general, I have had at best so-so experiences in the SD hooker bars. They seem a little too business like for my tastes.
The next day I got a non-sexual hour massage at the hotel for 250 DRP. It was a pretty decent massage. I went back to Monalissa looking for my friend of the day before. I wasn’t too worried about getting another massage too quickly, as she never had gotten around to that the first time. Anyway, my friend wasn’t there, but this cutie (also from Puerto Plata) came out of the back and I just had to get to know her a little. She was maybe 5 feet tall, maybe 45 KGs., had b+ natural chichis (no maybe about those) that screamed kiss me, had the cutest face I had ever seen, and she was sweet and unassuming. Three for three at Monalissa and I am in love.
I spent the afternoon walking around El Conde. I saw lots of pretty women. In the late afternoon, (it was New Year’s Eve) Gazcue turned into a ghost town. Everybody was resting up for the big night. They put a lot of energy into the celebration here and everyone should catch it once. With the streets closed off and traffic pretty much shut down, I couldn’t go anywhere, so I just hung out with the crowd on George Washington. Not many gringos were about. It was fun being there.
DRIVING UP NORTH
On New Year’s Day I rented a car from Avis at the airport. Kind of a waste of time and taxi money compared to using the downtown location, but I could see where everything was at on a map. I had studied the map of SD well and got out of town with minimal trouble. The drive to Santiago was pretty. I stopped at Tipico Bonao (thanks Woolf) and had a real decent lunch.
I got in trouble in Santiago. I lost the road and was let us say heading to Hati. I got back to a good part of town and paid a cabbie 100 DRP to have me follow him to the right road. I figured that was cheap. He put me on the one that goes through the mountains and I spent a visually awe inspiring but lengthy drive getting to Sosúa. I need to tell you guys that I saw quite a few beautiful young girls in these small mountain towns. There were two that went beyond angel classification. I almost drove off the road staring at one. She laughed.
Car rentals in the DR are not cheap. I paid $75 a day at Avis. I do feel that if you go to the north coast, it is a lot more flexible having a car to get around. Actually, (unless one is being hosted by some unnamed local entrepreneur), I would say that a car is mandatory. I might take the bus to Puerto Plata next time and then rent a car at the Puerto Plata airport. The drive I made this time is a breeze except getting through Santo Domingo and Santiago. I found that part to be major grief.
Sosúa
I stayed at the Europa. $110 US total for all three nights. It’s a nice enough place with a small kitchen in the room, huge bed, in room safe, ceiling fan, cable tv, swimming pool, large bathroom, and it was a large room. Compared to my earlier Crime and Punishment comment, you might write happy stories about the Easter Bunny in this room. The people were nice and very friendly. I would definitely use this hotel again and it is visitor friendly. O btw, a girl told me that the same guy that owns the Europa own the Sosua Palace. I met the guy and he seemed like a pretty decent sort, but I didn’t ask him about his business dealings or partners. She had a few things to say about the Palace as well, but we’ll save the chica talk for another time.
I liked Sosua, but it was slow. This is a nice beach town and there are a lot of very pretty non-pro young girls about, many of them Dominicanas. If you go here, do not assume that every snatch in town is for sale, although quite a few of them are. On New Years night (a holiday) I walked around and saw a dozen or so girls who set off the hooker radar, but none that I wanted. The High Caribbean Disco looked dead as well, so I drove over to the Sosua Car Wash by the highway. This seemed to be more of a regular folks place than a p4p locale. I decided to drive over to Caberete.
La Casa del Equipo was open and I found a friend for a short visit to her room. She was nice, but I was glad I did not take her for the night. We just didn’t click well. Btw, the rooms at the casa are terrible. You could not write a book of any kind in one of these. If you decide to go there, I suggest that you take your friend to a cabana. In retrospect I wish that I had done so. La salida for the girl was 150 DRP and she gladly accepted the 600 DRP I offered after a nice enough time. I had asked her what she wanted before, and she said pay me what you want when we are done. She was cute.
The next morning I went to the Sosua beach and had a few jugos naranjas and later on some arroz con camarrones. Good stuff. Interesting enough place. At one point a cutie put her arms around me to get me into some bar. TightFit’s words of watch out for the Sosua pick pockets passed through my mind. I kept an eye on her hand movements and she noticed that I was doing so. Hasta luego dulcita.
On the way back from the beach I noticed a massage sign in a store window and I figured I’d give it a try. A very friendly woman with great looking bazookers led me to a back room and gave me a so-so massage for 150 DRP. When she started on the front she encouraged me to raise the ante to 500 DRP total for an additional HJ or CBJ. I was going to pass and save the energy for later, but you know what happens when Mr. Happy starts contributing to the decision process. My massage therapist told me that things were indeed slow for the holiday week and she was expecting it to pick up soon.
A Nocturnal Visit to Puerto Plata or Maybe Not
I decided to drive to Puerto Plata to check out La Casa de Luz Maria. I left about sundown and it was a tough 26 km drive. The glare from the setting sun made the traffic signals impossible to see. If the guy in front of me goes, I guess I should too. Anyway, Puerto Plata is a lot bigger city than Sosua. As I tried to navigate to Avenida Colon I saw a few independents, but the traffic was really bugging me. I could tell that the city was going to take a little more time and energy to figure out than I wanted to invest as part of a three-day side trip. I bailed back to Sosua and had dinner.
Walking back from dinner (it is now January 2nd) I was approached by several girls, two of who would have required id checking. Also the number of unescorted girls in the small bars was up noticeably. I saw nobody I wanted. I decided to drive back to the Casa del Equipo for a possible take out. I like this bar. It is an outside format with lots of room right next to the ocean. There are plenty of characters coming and going. The only drawback is that the girl’s rooms are dismal. I have been to TJ (before the Chicago Club got renovated), Boystown, and the Mirage on Curacao back in 1998. The rooms in this place are worse than all of those. It’s too bad because it’s a nice enough place with some decent looking girls.
Anyway my friend from the night before set upon me and I had to politely say “Quiero una mujer diferente esta noche. Que todavía estemos amigos. Está bien contigo ?” Of course she had to say yes. By the time that I got ready to pick out the object of my desire for a run to a local cabana, all the candidates that I had identified had paired off with somebody. Guess it’s time to move on. I drove up the street to check out the next casa (Divi ?), but didn’t like what I saw.
Driving back toward Sosúa I saw three guys whom I remembered from the bar standing in front of Casa del Equipo trying to get a ride. I say what the fuck, time for some new blood in the game plan and offer them a ride. It turns out they are Swiss, staying in Caberete, going to Sosua, and say they know the town really well from a few years back. One guy spoke English, but as a group our common language was bad Spanish. We got by.
In Sosua they can’t believe how reduced the action is compared to their last visit. They take me to a few bars, one across the street from my hotel that I hadn’t noticed, and we compare notes on world travel. Everybody likes Brazil. These guys tell me that there is a growing number of newly wed Barzilieras living in Switzerland. They get into some rum and start taking pictures of a broad with huge tits using their cell phones. I decide it’s time to go to the High Caribbean disco.
The HCD has the most up scale girls in Sosúa-Caberete area from what I have seen. The girls dress up and a few tourists wander by as well. It’s pretty much a Sosúa version of Help. It costs 50 DRP to get in. I wander about and get to talking to a pretty Haitian. She tells me that she would like to come to my hotel, but is in the process of addressing a small passport situation. She starts suggesting other options for consummating our friendship. I say bye.
I wander about some more and meet a pretty girl by the bar and start talking to her. She is from (you guessed it) Puerto Plata. Maybe I should move there. Anyway I buy her drinks, she dances all over me, I buy her sister some drinks, she asks me if I have ever been with sisters, I say no, her sister wanders off, and on it goes. By the time we get to my hotel it’s three AM and I notice that my date is over lubricated with alcohol. I only bought her three. It gets a little dumb from there, but it still was fun. She’s a noisy thing and I forgot to close the windows onto the courtyard. The guy across the way had a new found respect for me the next day. I took her home to some motel so as not to have to deal with her hangover later that day. I am callous.
My last day in Sosúa I got the car gassed up for the ride back to SD, caught some sun, wrote most of this report, went out for dinner, and pondered my options. Btw, I found the Sosúa restaurant that many people have endorsed (Mouri Mai) to be so-so. The fish was over cooked and the service was less than stellar. La Roca across the street was better, as was the Blue Atlantic a few blocks down. Another night of mayhem at the High Caribbean sounded reasonable for my last night, but I had to get going too early for that. Truth is other than the HCD there is no place that I have seen that motivates me for a last run prior to Dingo.
NORTH COAST SUMMARY
Nice area. Great prices. Hobby action is hit or miss and in many cases lower end than I care for. I am not making plans to get back soon. If I had a regular Dominicana girl friend I would take her to Playa Dorado. If an opportunity to returns comes up, I will probably study the Puerto Plata area well and use the cabanas there for nighttime takeout activities from the Puerto Plata bars.
BACK TO SANTO DOMINGO
The ride back is about as ugly as the ride up. After returning the car and checking into the Napolitano, I beat feet to Monalissa. My most recent friend is there and gives me a very warm welcome back. I see her again that night, get a phone number, regálale a G2 which caused her to squeal in delight, and call it a trip in order to make a very early morning flight. Dingo will stay on my weekend get-away list. If the north coast trip makes sense, I might try it again with the Puerto Plata variations I mentioned. Next stop St. Martin.

It was fun reading your report. I wish I was there myself.
Your story about the restaurant Mouri Mai reminded me that when I was last there I heard some Latino group on the sound system that I really liked. I asked the owner, an American or European woman, I forget, who the group was. That was the first time I had ever heard of Mana'.

Hey TF. Wilco and I are talking about hooking up in the DR in late April. Always room for you.

Gitano,
I also liked your report. It was good seeing you again in Rio. I'm always looking for places to go to use my Spanish. From your report I'm guessing DR didn't quite live up to Rio, but few places would. How would you rate DR with quantity and quality comparted to Costa Rica?
Thanks for the report,
HC1

Best report posted in ages. More information, less ego, and a good read. Happy New Year Gitano, and many more like this one to you.

Thanks for the report Gitano.
Sounds like you hit DR at the wrong time of the year but could you quickly compare to CR and TJ talent and attitude wise or your chica sampling was not large enough?

Good to see you back here, Gitano. I like it when reports focus on practicalities beyond just price and performance. The driving and hotel info was good, but the best was this gem:
"I took her home to some motel so as not to have to deal with her hangover later that day. I am callous."

nice report.. This brings me back to my first mongering trip which was by accident. I was 18 years old and was on an extended surfing vacation in Puerto Rico. A PR local buddy brought me to Sosua. I laugh now when I think about it becuase I had no idea that the alot of the girls were pros. My first day there I was meeting a lot of girls and had 2 girls lined up for dates that evening. I told my friend that I would need his help..
He laughed and said " these girls are like dinner at a restaurant, when you are finished there is a bill..you know that right? "
It was an eye opener. Later that evening I was banging a sweet little chica ... I became a monger for life that night .
I just turned 30 and can remember the experience like it was yesterday ..I will be going back to rio to be 18 again in april.

Thanks for all the compliments guys. It is good to hear from you. I'll try and take a shot at a few of the comparative questions.
First of all, I do not feel that I hit the DR at the wrong time. The Xmas season is the wrong time anywhere in Latin America and I feel that DR was a better option than most other choices.
I would rate the DR second only to Rio with regard to the women. When I speak of Santo Domingo, I primarily mean the barrios called Gazcue and La Zona Colonial. These are the tourist areas. The Zonas Rojas are not concentrated like in San Jose or TJ. As such, it is a little more difficult to learn. You need to do your homework.
I get letters from guys asking me if the Dominicanas are all dark. In the south (Santo Domingo) the answer is definetly not. Actually, I was stunned by how many pretty women I encountered. I have a natural attraction to morenas as well. I saw plenty of these up north around Puerto Plata as well.
Domincanas are (IMNSHO) not as sensuos as Brazilieras, but they can be really sweet. Obviously a girl who has been working for a longer time at fleecing drunk tourists will be more hardened. All in all, I would not find it too difficult to settle down with a Dominicana. They may not be as sexually agressive as Brazilieras, but I suspect that they would tend to be a little more dedictaed. Obviously these generalizations are so much bullshit conjecture.

"All in all, I would not find it too difficult to settle down with a Dominicana."
Be very careful my friend. Seriously. Dominican women change dramatically once they get their visa and/or husband. Also, intellectual pursuits may not be unknown among Dominicans but it's a pretty low priority. After a while the non stop soap operas wear thin. And living in the country means dealing with a constant scamming from everyone you deal with.

Gitano, I feel strongly also about the Dominican woman, dated many of them in the NYC area, most of them love their country and only come here to work so they can build their dream home in the DR, the younger ones that have come here when they were young will think of the USA as their home.
They are some sexy ladies, and the ones I have met are VERY HARD WORKING, I don't know how many ladies from the DR that guys have met or know that aren't WHORES but the ones that I have met in college want a lot out of their life and are WILLING to WORK for it!!!! and some of them had some of the best grade point avg.
Their parents brought them here when they were young so they could have a better chance in life, some of the guys on this broad NEED to met women from different background that aren't WHORES maybe they could make a better judgement on different types of women other then WHORES from different races.
There were many sailors from the DR and many others guys that wasn't from the DR that have marry ladies from the DR I know and they are VERY happy with their wifes more so then the 70% of the the guys that have DUMP the ladies from the USA.
A latina as a hold will take better care of her man if he treat her right!!!!!
When I only have a few days I always love to go to the DR, I never had a bad trip I hate even talking about the DR on this site due to some of the backward crazy talk I here on here like:" HOW MANY HAVE DARK SKIN??? IS THEIR ANY LIGHT SKIN GIRLS THERE?? SICK DUMB SHIT LIKE THAT.
Take out a BOOK and learn the history of some the country you want to go to, but let me take that one back with some of the thinking I read on here maybe it's a GOOD and BETTER ideal that some of you stay away from the DR before you bring the DUMB SHIT to a nice place like the DR. and FUCK IT UP, with all the backward thinking.
Just but down the playboys books and take out some other books and read this way you wouldn't sound so much like a dumb ass American by asking dumb ass questions like "DO THEY HAVE ANY LIGHT SKIN GIRLS OVER THERE", if that's so important to you just play if safe and go to GERMANY or the NETHERLANDS there you will find more of the types of girls to your liking, but I must warn you there are some dark ones there also.

Anyone want to hear some real down home Dominican music? I am not talking about the well known meregue. This stuff is called bachata. Kind of like a basic country music. Download anything by the artist Elvis Martinez.

I have read the reports with interest;
Being in the D.R. during Christmas time....26 DEC..till about 9 JAN...is sorta a waste of time
in most of the places I have been to in D.R.
I am really curious, and have read many reports here...The reports regarding Costa Rica sorta
leaves me wondering IF I really want to go there.
I do not care for the "lap dances", OR...strip clubs, or Massages; In the D.R. there are
plenty of places like that, but..I like to get
down to the "facts"..make the decision..and take
her HOME with me;
Has ANY of the READERS traveled to COSTA RICA in the PAST year??? Most of the reports are quite OLD....
For the past 3 years I have traveled to the
Dominican Republic...average about every 6 weeks in between visits;
This place is one of the more fantastic places I
have ever visited for YOUNG, pretty ladies; As for
action: there's plenty to be had;
I just returned from there 1 week ago, so what I
will tell you...is FIRST handed....and current,
Most of the stuff I read on Hombre...is OLD messages..that happend 3 years ago....things do
change:
I have always stayed in Santo Domingo...of course
the capitol. There are many secrets that you will learn, as....I have, and..it cost me dollars
to get all this knowledge....and lots of time;
First..if you are looking for action: would advise you to find a HOTEL..that will "accept"
you bringing a "lil darling" home with you for the night; NOT all hotels will allow this:
There are MANY brothels: the ladies at the Remington Palace: there is between 75 and 125 ladies there..at all times (the place opens at 9 in the evening..and closes at 4 in the morning)
There..U make your selection (wow...and what selections) the ages run fm 18...to about 30 y.o.
big, small, tall, short, fat, nice, all dressed
in there "fine ware"...to entice you.... The standard price is 1500 PESO's for the night...When I was there 1 week ago, the exchange rate is 2200 peso's (which if you will do your math is about 68.00 USD for the night)....The
time is the tricky thing....She can not leave with YOU before 1130 at night...and she must leave you by 10 the next morning; O..you can take her at 9 at night, but..then she must return by 1am....I prefer the all nite deal; These ladies live at the Remington; Well enough on this (all cabs know where the Remington is located)
Then there is Casa Modelo, Casa Theresa, Casa Coco, Casa Publico, LA55 (THIS IS A BAR) LAPSU (another bar, but HO's are there for u) TABOO 2
well...as U can tell..I have worked these places
and..have had some really good times with them.
The ONLY bad time for LACK of ladies..has been around Christmas...The ladies go home then.
As for Safety: ONE of the MORE safe places that I have EVER been to....it does help to know a little Spanish; (and I am a GRINGO)
The prices the man above quoted about Santo Domingo...wow...sorta STEEP priced; I stayed
in a REALLY fancy place on the Malecon, Puerta Plata.....42.00 USD a night; I went to a couple local bars, different nights and picked up a 25 y.o....NON PROSTITUTE; I gave her equal to about 50. USD for a night of making love...She ask for
no DOLLARS....and my friends; I am not 25 AND HANDSOME..but..MY dollars SPEND quite nicely. lol
I presently pay
36.00 A NIGHT in Santo Domingo..and have a hotel
very nicely located to resturants and the "puta's"
While there...try to visit the EL CONDE....
very nice......(for day time)
Best to you.
Bennie..in North Carolina
