I meant to post this sooner, but I my employer is in the middle of merging with another company and I just don't have the time. Too much work, not enough time. That's my excuse.

I arrived in RJ on Friday, December 13. That's right--Friday the 13th. I was kind of skiddish about arriving on the 13th, but this seemed to be the best time to start my first trip to RJ.

Went through immigraton and customs with any problems. Bobby from BlameItOnRio made arrangements to pick me up at the airport. But, as luck would have it, NO DRIVER to pick me up.

Spoke with Bobby on the phone. He tells me the driver is there, just look for someone holding a sign with my name.

I go back to the pickup area. No one is holding a card with my name. I was dreading this, but decided to see if my short course in Portuguese would get me through the day.

There were at least ten drivers there holding signs, so I asked them if they were from BlameItOnRio. One of the baggage handlers spoke English and help me with the translation. He determined that one of the drivers was from BlameItOnRIo and was waiting for a passenger on American Airlines, but that the passenger had not shown up. Very interesting.

Enough of this crap. I decided to just grab the first cab out of there and get myself down to Cocpacabana. The baggage handler got me a taxi, but the driver from BlameItOnRio quickly grabbed my bag and insisted on driving me instead. Now it gets real interesting.

These two drivers start shouting amongst themselves for the right to drive me to Copacabana. They both start pulling on my suitcase. It is looking like a fight may break out any moment. Quite a scene. This is getting really interesting watching these two. It is incredible what drivers will do for a fare. Welcome to Rio de Janeiro!!

I decided to intervene and told the taxi guy that I would go with the guy from BlameItOnRio. The baggage handler did the translation. The taxi guy very begrudgingly gave up arguing, but not without a final word to the BlameItOnRio guy.

Okay, so now I have a ride, but the baggage handler wants a tip for helping me out so I give him ten $R's for his help. It looks like I better bone up on my Portuguese fast.

You don't need to bone up on Portuguese to avoid such a mess, just don't book rides in advance. They are always more expensive than taking either a meter cab or a radio taxi. Just write the name and address of your destination on a card, give it to the cab driver, and if it's a meter cab, make sure he turns on the meter. YOu can pay in advance for a radio cab ("Coopertramo" etc) inside the terminal. and while it costs more than the meter cab, it'll be less than going with Bobby's service and will have air-con (always nice this time of year).

Why did you pay 10R? What did the taxi driver do to earn it other than argue? I'd have told the taxi driver to go to hell personally. I understand it's only $3, but the point is that the taxi driver only asks for tips from gringos. When you pay it, it makes it harder on the next gringo who is sure to get hit up.

Whether the tip was overly generous or not I don't know, depends on amount of baggage he carried, how much his translation services helped, etc. But it would seem to me he deserved something for his efforts.

The problem with arranged rides not being at the airport is common. Bwana Dik's suggestion is on point.

We all should arrive in Rio or wherever with our destination, hotel or apt., written down and with enough reals (at least 40 reals) to pay for the ride.

$ is going down at the moment. As soon as you get off the plane at GIG, you can exchange $'s for $R's by baggage claim, or outsite Customs at American Express.

Neither one of these places are the best, but they are better then exchange rates in the US.

I would actually suggest that you should have $R100 when you leave the airport, and before you get a taxi. Just my thoughts.

Jeeze. Some of you guys are so quick to jump on guys that tip. There is a difference between getting taken and being generous. I'm not sure why people get in such a tizzy over tips. You can either elect to pay them or say no.

I ALWAYS handle baggage handlers that help me with my bags. I totally agree with Layne. Some of you need to spend less time hammering guys over money issues and concentrate more on chicas. I also agree about NOT getting a pre-arranged service at the airport. I rented my apartment with David at gringomanagement.com. I didn't really pay attention or ask him what the transfer would cost. People seem to like him but I can honestly say that I emailed his staff from their webpage on several different occassions asking about prices of plane tickets and no one ever responded to my emails. To me, that is no way to do business. On the flip side, I did rent a cell phone at his storefront and it was quick, effortless and the rates seemed to be good. His employee, Luana, was excellent to deal with and I highly recommend her.
