Much to my surprise, I discovered that there is more to Thailand than Pattaya Go Go Bars. My Brother and I decided to go scuba diving on this trip to Thailand partly to alleviate family suspicions that we were going there for nefarious purposes. As most scuba divers know, the diving in Pattaya is subpar, so we decided to go to Krabi and Koh Samui.
Of course we wanted to partake in Thailand’s famous nightlife, so I was tasked with the job of researching options in these areas not known for extensive P4P action. The first thing I discovered is that information is hard to come by which is the main reason for this report. Koh Samui wasn’t too bad, but Krabi was very hard to find info on, which is surprising because I actually found quite a bit of action there. Hotels are nice and cheap if you shop around. Here is the bungalow we paid 500 Baht for.
KRABI
Krabi is a province in the South of Thailand just East of Phuket. There is also a city called Krabi which is where the airport is. From there it’s about a half hour drive to the beach and town of Ao Nang. At first glance, it’s obvious that this is an area much less spoiled by Westerners than Pattaya or Phuket, but it’s on it’s way. The beach is much nicer and there are far fewer vendors. There is the necessary McDonalds, and 711’s, but other than that, it’s mostly private businesses. The bargirl areas are very hard to find and are hidden away from public view. The first is on the main street coming in to Ao Nang from Krabi, and is approximately across the street from McDonalds. Even knowing that, it is still hard to find because it is in an alley. The best thing to do, is just park your bike across from McDonalds and walk around until you find it. Don’t even bother looking until after 8pm.
We were pleasantly surprised once we found it. There were about 15 beer bars with the usual assortment of bargirls you’d find in Pattaya; in other words, one pretty cute girl among several other average ones. I had no trouble barfining the cutest one and we took her on a tour of the area next day. She was a lot of fun, but was not too happy when I barfined someone else from her bar the next night. I know; I’m a male dog with no feelings;) Here are a few pics of her and the scenery in Krabi.

This second bargirl was even more fun, although I just kept her short time since we were leaving the early the next morning for scuba diving . As you can see from her pictures, she was a very nasty girl, and loads of fun!

The next night we went out to find the second main bar area. This one is in the restaurant area across from the main beach. It too is very hard to find without knowing exactly where it is. There is sort of a horse shoe behind the restaurant and businesses across from the beach. I’m sorry I can’t remember the names of the restaurant that are next to the alley, but if you ask around, you’ll eventually find it. We were pleasantly surprised here too. A good assortment of bars and their denizens, and mostly lots of fun. I met this very tall Chinese/Thai girl dancing in one of the bars and she talked me into taking her into a short time room on the premises. She blew me away with her performance, although she was reluctant to allow photos. Very nice GFE with all the usual activities. BTW, all prices here were very similar to Pattaya.
As were were leaving this area later, I did a double take when I saw this girl walking with her boyfriend that looked very familiar. She did the same double take, and we both grinned when we realized I had barfined her in Pattaya 3 months before. She was on a trip with her barfiner, and I saw her again when I arrived in Pattaya a week later. Small country.
The next day we took a taxi and then a ferry to get to Koh Samui.
Koh Samui
I was disappointed with Koh Samui, but maybe it’s because I stayed at Chaeweng Beach rather than a less congested one like Lamui, and because I did not like the way the hotels are on the beaches instead of a public beach like Pattaya and Phuket. When you are walking along the business and nightlife areas, you would barely know you were in a beach city, because the hotels block the view of the beaches. Chaeweng is extremely congested and commercial. The nightlife is easy to find, but we found the attitudes there unfriendly for the most part and the prices higher than Pattaya and Krabi. The first 2 nights there I didn’t even barfine anyone, and when I finally did, I was not thrilled. I doubt I will go back, but if I do, I certainly won’t stay in Chaeweng. Some very nice areas near by. Here are some bargirl pics, and some scenery from nearby Koh Thao, and Nang Yuan.

It’s easy to get to though. The next day we hopped a quick flight right to U-Tapao in Pattaya.
Pattaya
What is there to say about Pattaya that hasn’t been reported on a million times already? It seemed exactly the same as always although it was a very slow season and the girls seemed more eager than usual for business. I stayed in Soi Lk Metro at the Pasadena right next door to Lólita's, and as usual, I was very happy staying there. You really don’t have to leave the local area with 3 Go Go’s and countless beer bars within walking distance.
I’m sorry this report won’t have my usual amount of photos. We were very busy scuba diving even in Pattaya as my Brother and friend both decided to get certified. Even though Pattaya has subpar scuba diving, it’s actually a pretty good place to get certified, especially considering everything else it has to offer. Another reason for my lack of photos is that I am starting to shoot a lot more HD video. It’s my new hobby, and I’m starting to get a good collection of stripteases and other shows, but it’s certainly cutting into my normal prolific picture taking.
I’ll be back for Christmas (but not before making another trip to Colombia for the most beautiful women on the planet), except this time I’m going to Khao Lak to scuba dive in the Similians. It too, looks very difficult to find the nightlife, but you can be sure I’ll find it if it’s available.

It's clear that you do a lot of homework before your trips, The information you have posted is very helpful.
Did you only barfine the second girl once? She looks and sounds like a girl one would want to repeat with.

Great information! I will add Krabi to a future LOS itinerary. I also found Chawaeng disappointing and wouldn't return to Koh Samui.

Hey Jonesie,
I've actually been thinking of contacting you about a trip there, but wanted to wait until i was certain. Are you going to be in Medellin for Thanksgiving? Be great to hang with you again, especially if you can keep from taking advantage of poor Katerina.
I'm finding that I have to have other things to do on these trips besides mongering. It's seems a shame to go to these novel places and not venture out. Scuba diving is great, because most of our favorite venues are perfect for it, and it gives something constructive to focus on during the day.

Av8tr,
You worry about getting there, I'll worry about the entertainment. You can overlap your visit to include a Monday and Tuesday after I'm gone for your cultural needs. Just let me take care of the weekend.

Thanks for the info on Krabi. I'm planning on visiting Ao Nang next year to see an "old friend." Definitely good to know where the poo ying is. What were the prices in Krabi? Barfine, ST, LT?

What resort is the one before Pattaya?
CN
| By Av8tr on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 - 11:08 pm: Edit |
I think the barfines were 300. It was 1000 st and 1500 long time.
CN. There are 2 islands about a 1 hour ferry ride from Koh Samui called Koh Thao and Koh Nang Yuan. Koh Thao is well known for great scuba diving, and they both have great snorkeling and great beaches. You can stay on Kho Thao, but there is no nightlife there. you'd have to bring your own.

The beaches at Krabi may be the best in Thailand. Great diving and snorkeling and some very interesting day trips. Elephant trekking into jungle - kayaking in the mangrove swamps etc.
I was there with GF at the time but we did see the beer bars and made the rounds. This was a few years ago and pickings were slim si I never even bothered to report. I was glad I brought my own pussy back then. Glad to hears things have improved. Thanks for the update Av8tr.

Awesome report!! Thank you.... it has been added as trip destination for March/April 2010!!!

Jomtien is South of Pattaya and Naklua is North of Pattaya. Hua Hin is west of Pattaya across the Gulf of Thailand. It takes five or six hours to get to Hua Hin from Pattaya by shuttle bus.

av8tr; Now that you are shooting video how big of a hard drive are you using on your laptop, or portable hard drive? I know video takes up a lot of space. I have one of those little kodak video cameras and when I shoot in HD it fills up the SD card in a hurry.
One thing I noticed is that when I use my Zi6 video camera in low light, the picture washes out real bad. One of my friends turned me onto this little light http://www.camerabright.com/ They fit in the tripod mount on the camera.

This is a link to my FAMILY movie of the trip. Of little interest to most mongers. The 2nd half shows some of the scuba. My brother and friend had never scuba'd before, and they both got certified. My Brother has a serious back problem and was still able to complete it.

Roadglide, I have a regular Canon HD camcorder with a 16gb card and that holds 2 hours of video at the highest possible setting. I can go and entire trip without moving files to my laptop, but rarely do. The storage issue is not an problem for me.
Sufficient light is crucial to good video. Canon makes a nice light that fits on to the hotshoe of the camcorder. It seems to work pretty well for my striptease videos. I think I sent them to you by email verdade?

Mesmerizing pics of beach scenes and chicas, the pics look like postcards. Some of the places look like the beaches in Sihounokeville, Canbodia. Also a great place to mix together beach/gals. Another buddy just got back from Vietnam, which also seems very scenic. Great info about places I'm eager to explore.

Av8tr,
Thanks for sharing the info. I assume the Krabi diving took you to the same spots that you would go to from Phuket? If so that sounds like a great choice so you can unwind, skip the Phuket crowds and save on accomodations. If you're staying just a few nights, a steady BF there could be rewarding.
