Typing this up sitting in a neighboorhood Bar in Rio, while using a Netbook. Still getting used to the little keyboard. Screw the typo's...here we go:
Anyway, just returned from a 3 night trip to Sosua, Dominican Republic. To sum up my trip into one sentence - I loved it!!!
In many ways the Dominican's have a way about them that is very similiar to Brazilian's, which made me feel comfortable right away.
I stayed at the Europa Hotel in Sosua (I just posted another report and review in the Hotel Europa section with pics) and it was the perfect starting point for my daily excursions.
My flight arrived into Sosua without a hitch... I decided in advance of my trip to rent a car, which was one of the better decisions I made. The total cost of the rent a car - including taxes, etc, was about $84.00 for the entire long weekend. I used a credit card with car rental protection, which saved me about $80 in additional insurance fees.
It looks like the set taxi prices from the airport to Sosua is $25.00, so quite pricey. I wanted to enjoy myself and not worry about finding some cheap public transportation, taxi negotiation hassles (get plenty of this in Brazil), etc... the car rental fit the bill. Overall driving was easy, at least to me.
The action in Sosua is in your face...pretty much every girl walking down the street will smile at you and seems available. I arrived around 5:00pm and there seemed to be plenty of girls already trolling the streets and starting to arrive into the bars.
I walked to the main strip of the bars looking for a happy hour to get me going....found a 2 for 1 special at one place with a sign that showed Merengue Bar (they have a disco upstairs), sorry but I do not remember the exact name. Ended up drinking Brahma light at 100 (or was it 90?) pesos, which came out to be $2.50 (or 1.25 if you consider the free beer). The onslaught of girls was nonstop, which pretty quickly led me to not look them in the eyes anymore. Any eye contact pretty much would be responded to by "can I sit with you? or "buy me a drink?".
After throughly enjoying my happy hour - I got relatively happy around 7:30pm and a girl walked into the bar, smiled and walked over. This is where my trip report for the DR as it relates to girls starts to get limited - She was a 20 year beautiful Haitian/Dominican girl - sweet, easy going, just great! The price was left open - she told me whatever i wanted to give to her would be fine. With her limited english and my limited spanish, however, we hit it off.... she drank just a few beers and already started feeling tipsy. Not a big drinker - a big plus (cheaper for me :-). Within an about an hour she was kissing me, hugging, and I spent the entire trip with her. What can I say, she was just awesome! 3-4 a day, with her begging for more - yes, I know that is hard to believe.
I tend to like getting laid in the morning and evening before going to sleep....the rest of the time for me is to party, go the beach, etc,.... she pretty much insisted...no begged (yes, again you might not believe this) for "quickies" before we went out each night!
Overall, Sosua is an extremely easy mongering scene - very laid back, not expensive, and certainly tons of girls. The nightclubs get going after midnight, but there are plenty of girls to be found in all the bars the rest of the time.
The car came very handy, since I also made a few trips to Cabarete which is a nearby town that can be reached in about 15-20 minutes by car.
Between the nightclub scene in Sosua and Cabarete, the day time beach time in both places as well, the time passed very fast.
Overall I would probably recommend Cabarete's beach more then the one in Sosua. Cabarete's beach front is more upscale and nicer then Sosua. At night time, when the nightclubs started to open, I also noticed plenty of available ladies in the Cabarete's nightclub.
Here are some pics of Sosua:
Here are some pics of Cabarete:
Sorry guys, I will not share pics of my girl....again, I only had one. In the end I gave her 5000 Pesos for 4 days, 3 nights...$138 USD... or less then $50 a night. Based on some of the other reports I have read, I probably overpaid but $50 a day certainly was more then fair -at least to me. She did not even count the money... in the end she just could not stop hugging me, and only wanted to know when I would come back again. Well, our hobby is all about illusion and fantasy....Tears certainly do not move me anymore. But I can't stress enough how awesome she was - in the top 5 for sure! Little stuff that impressed me....once she noticed me drinking Brahma beer, which is included in the happy hour and is cheaper then beer she liked to drink, which was Corona, she switched without me asking. When she was around her group of friends, she only asked me for an extra drink once - for her sister. Where we ate, how much we spent, drank, etc, etc, was completely up to me. It made the time with her very relaxing and not stressful in worrying about her trying to take advantage of me. On my last day, while I was in the shower, she packed my suitcase without me asking her to do so, and many other little things along the way,
Overall, I really cannot give a really good report on the girls since I ended up only spending the time with one. But, there are plenty - but, you must like darker girls. If you like blonds you might want to stay away :-)
Plenty of beautiful girls, however... very flirty, and I am not sure if a "regular" girl actually exists in Sosua. It seems to be me that almost all of them are available and are open to some pay for play.
Easy going and laidback environment, Carribbean sea, plenty of beautiful girls, nightlife, and reasonable prices - I know I will be back!!!!
While preparing for this trip I read some of the other trip reports and posting, including some that asked how DR compares to places like BA. For me, Sosua and the surrounding places remind me more of Bahia in Brazil, with the girls attitudes and looks similiar to those found in the Balcony Bar in Copa. Pretty good combo.
By the way, one more note about the dress code - shorts & t-shirts, even in the nightclubs. Nice touch!
I also highly recommend Cabarete - but in a taxi, it is $25 each way from Sosua.

Nice report LM. I had a terrific time there too. The girls i met were so sweet and loving and also never negotiated a price. They took what i gave them and seemed more eager to get in another quickie than worring about price. I still cant figure out why so many board members dislike DR. I'm glad you had a good time.

You can also rent gorgeous beach houses there on www.vrbo.com

"If you like blonds you might want to stay away"... exceptions can and will be made when necessary.
You hooked up with a good girl, makes a world of difference. I spent a week at Casa de Campo in La Romana on the other side of the island-great place.

Sorry, I just noticed some of the pics are out of order. Some of the Sosua pics I listed as being in Cabarete. Had too many beers already by the time I started typing the report....
JR- I was initially worried about going to the DR because of the reports I read, but I truly was happy that I went. I certainly will add DR to my regular trip rotation.
To me it seems it is pretty hard to go wrong, as long as you like a laid back and easygoing environment. With bars, beaches, and a great nightlife a good time is bound to find you.....
Most of the girls I saw were smiling and very approachable.
Best of all - just a quick, easy, and cheap flight from Miami. While I live in Brazil, I do travel to Miami all the time. I just wanted something quick and easy - DR certainly fits the bill!

Thanks for the writeup LM. The DR has been tempting me for years now, just haven't pulled the trigger. Reports like this will certainly weigh heavy on future travel decisions.
I really like the proximity to the US. The prices sound great too. Thanks again.

Nice report - I love Sosua too and will shortly be heading back for trip #4 this year and #7 in the past two years. It's not Rio, but when you think about it, it offers a lot of the same positives - great beach, tons of available women of all colors, a "termas surrogate" in La Passions, and a "Help surrogate" in Classicos Disco. Plus it's a lot closer, cheaper, and safer. And like Rio, high minimum service levels with no bullshit about bareback blow jobs. Finally, I don't have to bust my balls relearning Portuguese again...

Thanks for the update LM. I'm taking my first trip to the Sosua, DR, in February, and this report is very timely, and helpful. Thanks again.

I have to agree with your report, But I will rather be in Rio, but as the visa requirements, little time for trips, more expensive trips, and the convenience of living next door to DR. DR is just a very easy and convenient place to go for a quick get away!
I have visited DR, Sozua a least 10 times in the last 12 months, since renewing my 5 years Brazil visa has not worked out as I expected. Too much hassle and at the end of a 2 day brazilian embassy trip a 90 days visa. Frustrating! But I digress...
Sozua is a small beach town with plenty of hotels, from cheap too not so cheap, I usually stay at the New gardens hotel (50 to 60 d/n), tried the Europa(40-50/n) but not worth the 10 box difference, Sea breeze(45/n) is okay too. All hotels are girls friendly and walking distance to the action.
About women, they are all over the place, do not expect the brazilian beauties, but enough to get everyone happy. I have to agree my expectations have droped a few notches, but is made up by their willing disposition and ease accesability. Negotiating is also rather easy. Not difficult to find a sweety that will just stay with you for the duration of your trip, and even help you get more candy to play. (amazing)
About renting a car, the town is so small you don't need one unless you are going to be doing some sight seeing (don't really get that).
If you want to rent a car I advise you to rent at the airport in POP, that way you save the $25 dollar each way taxi fare, that is $50 towards your rental and having the access of the car if you decide to use it. I did rent one once but because of arriving at STI airport. Taxi was about $100 dollars each way so I ended up about even but with a car, that I never used once I got there.
About the security, I feel the place is quite safe if you are not a dumb traveler. Hotels check ID for girls and usually all have safes, I usually instruct the security not to let them go unless I give the ok. (no one leaves if am past out drunk, or fallen asleep, avoiding the unexpected dissapearance of stuff in the morning)
Sorry, I kind of got carry away with my two cents.

About renting a car, you are right the town is small you don't need one if all you are going to do is stay in Sosua. But I get bored easily and I enjoy exploring....Cabarete is a great place that is nearby, but a $25.00 or so taxi ride each way (I went there 2 times)- for me it is not so much about sight seeing, but rather avoiding getting bored in a town with one non-working traffic light. In Cabarete I also saw many working girls, plus I liked the club on the beach - overall the beach was nicer there too. The car just gave me a lot of flexibility and I used it every day.... plus my girl needed a change of clothes each day and went back and forth to her place...again the car was very useful.
You are right, it is definitely best to rent at the airport with one of the major rental car companies - I booked mine via budget.com. In the end I had no hassles or unexpected costs. Also, use a credit card with rental car insurance - otherwise the cost of the rental car can easily double with the insurance cost.

I am curious how the Haitian disaster impacts the scene..... my girl was part Haitian, and many of the girls in the different bars were as well. I am sure many will probably want to visit their families and help out as much as they can.
