For any of you power port laptop users out there, it appears as if Cathay Pacific does have power ports in the first couple of rows of economy class until row 46 in their 747's. I called today and they changed my seats for me. If you need this, just call and ask them. The agent was quite helpful.
I also found out you cannot use AAdvantage miles to upgrade tickets on Cathay. You can earn miles and earn miles toward AA elite status (check the fare code though) and you can also get a free ticket on Cathay using AAdvantage miles, but no upgrades. For that you need to join the Asia Miles program at http://www.asiamiles.com
I only glanced at the program, but some of you Asia only travelers might want to look into it. Lots of airlines seem to be participating in the program. I would do it, but I also travel to SA and will be heading to CA and Germany in the future.

I am a big fan of Cathay Pacific. Their flight attendants are all hot and young and friendly.
It was quite a contrast changing from AA in Narita to Cathay. I went from old hags on AA that had been working there for 30 years, had complete and utter disgust for their customers and their jobs and were all about 100 pounds overweight and had no business walking up and down airplane aisles.
Beyond that, I like Cathay because all their planes are modern and new. They arrive on time and depart on time with little or no hassle. I just love that airline and highly recommend traveling them, even it means paying a fee extra bucks. You notice it in the service you receive from them and how little hassle it is to fly them. They are all professional and high class.
Actually, I like the Asian airlines in general that I have flown compared to their American counterparts. EVA was also way cool. Korean Air I am mostly ambivalent about though.

I thought someone posted about this but I cannot find it. Cathay Pacific has a deal running through the end of this month or until deemed sold out for LAX-BKK with possibly stopover in HK for $563. I would have purchased this, but didn't when I called and discovered that I would not get elite status requalification miles. (17,000+)
Add this to the fact that I don't any miles (double with my Platinum status), and the savings aren't quite there for me.
This should be a great deal for others that aren't trying to maintain status, though.

Need to jump on the bandwagon and add my two cents here...I agree with Xeno, Cathay Pacific is by far the best airline I have ever flown. The service is great, the seats and creature comforts in coach are much better than anything I have ever experienced on an American airline. I flew them on a couple occasions from Bahrain to Guam, with stops along the way in Manila, and I highly recommend them. GREAT AIRLINE!! The US lines could definitely get some tips from these guys when it comes to customer service.
And yeah...Xeno is also spot on when it comes to the flight attendent quality as well...

I currently rate Cathay in the #4 slot for Asian Airlines. They are beaten hands down in all categories by Singapore, EVA, and China Airlines. Still a good airline though. They blow the socks off any US carrier.

All, I would tend to agree with Mursaki.. However.. to be fair.. some airlines ECONOMY classes are far superior to others.. so.. in essance (IMHO) when you rate an airline, I really think you are rating it TWICE.. first from an economy perspective and second from a Business/First persepective..
That being said, I really think that EVA's new B773's are *excellent* in economy, CX's new long haul B773/B744 product is also of comparative value.. CI's long haul is good, but you really need to be on their A343's to get the really good stuff.. Sadly, the US and most the western european carriers lag their asian counterparts for economy cabin comforts..

I have become somewhat disenchanted with Cathay Pacific recently. Service levels have gone down and there have been cutbacks in service. But I am stuck with them until I bite the bullet and change alliance programs, which won't happen till I reach 2 million lifetime miles with AA. But at least I have gotten a pair of First Class awards on them in the last two years which is better than AA first class. And I would still prefer almost any Asian carrier in Economy to a US carrier, especially Trans-Pacific.
And the One World First Class award is 135K miles through AA.
If I were part of Cathay's mileage program, it would have cost me 220K miles through Asia Miles to fly from North America to Asia.
Here are some pictures of Cathay First Class I took a while ago.

Two other quick notes. The first three pictures are the One World First Class lounge in LAX.
Basically the "other side." Not a huge difference except less crowded with Aussies. Qantas is flying like three A380s out of LAX now, I think, around the same time of the Cathay flights. Two to Sydney and one to Melbourne so the OW lounge is always PACKED!
Then there is the free self serve booze in the First Class lounge.
Cathay First gives you pajamas and then they make a bed out of the lie-flat seat with extra padding and sheets and a nice pillow. You also have the luxury of eating whenever you want and whenever you are hungry.

Cathay is super nice, but Business on Asiana Airlines is not too shabby either. I was lucky enough to get upgraded by Star Alliance and being in ANY sleeper seat is a great relief for long haul flights to SEA.
Star Alliance upgraded me for free on my recent flight to Lima as well. Seating was great but the food sucked.

Cathay is nice, but the new business class seats are a bit like a coffin (IMHO)
first class is nice, the "jammies" were a little too goofey for my taste.
the AA mileage plan seems to me the best, the other ones i have ( nwa, kal, amex) all seem to use much more mileage for the same routes ( san/hkt)
we booked san/lax/hkg/hkt for oct way back in april, and seats for the hkg/hkt buss class were already full in dragon air.
but compairing mileage used for the aa plan to kal is about 60% less mileage used.
they ( aa plan) charges per segment, which works out best IMHO.

Looks like the end is near for first class on Cathay Pacific. If you have not taken advantage of a miles deal and flown on them you really have missed out on something special.

This chart "should" let you know what aircraft are going to be updated and when. Flights out of LAX will continue to use 777, but some of them will NOT have first class seats.
However it looks like flights out of SFO will have a 4 class 747, so on some flights you will still have that first class option.

I am trying to get in one last run before they remove first class on the 777's from LAX to HKG.
We'll see what happens. I have a itinerary on hold now for the spring. Since the removal won't be complete until the end of 2013, hopefully the LAX-HKG route will be one of the last to be switched...
