Making my first trip to LOS next month on EVA and wanted to ask how strict & what they typically allow you to bring in your Laptop Bag (1)personal item which fits under the seat - compared to the USA carriers?
Thanks in advance for any reponses.

Straightedge,
Flying EVA into or out of the US, they will have the same restrictions for items in carry-on as established for domestic carriers by the TSA. I have found that EVA is VERY picky about the weight of the carry-on. I can't remember if the limit is 12 or 15 kilos but I have been one kilo overweight and have been forced to check it in.
I like EVA. I think they are a quality ride.
Hope this helps,
EA

EL apado,
The weight for your carry on (overhead bin) is clearly given on their website. I was asking about your 1 personal item (for your laptop).
Do they allow a large bag that will carry all of your laptop accessories: speakers, printer, etc or just a smaller bag like you typically carry for business not vacation. Thanks

If it fits the specification given on the website (size, weight) you can take it on - just like EVERY other carrier in the world. And, although the weight limits are clearly posted, EVA actually checks them unlike a lot of other airlines.

EA: at what point did they actually weigh your carry-on? The only place I ever had that happen to me was in Brisbane (Australia). The guy who checked the boarding passes when you first enter the area where you get searched etc had a crummy scale like a producer vendor's, and if your stuff looked heavy he'd stop you ("I'm talkin' to ya serious mate!").

Bendejo,
They check me at check-in. I always say that I don't have bags to check and they always have me put it on the scale. If it's overweight (which has happened 3 of 4 trips), they make me check it.
As long as the bag actually MAKES it there, it's really not that big of a deal. By the time you get through immigration, luggage is usually waiting for you. However, on the way back - going through that shit-hole of an airport known as LAX - I've had to wait for up to an hour to get my bag. That's an hour AFTER I've gone through immigration.
As always, YMMV.

Sounds like LAX is as bad as SFO with luggage handling.

Just tonight my bag coming off my PAL flight took over an hour to reach the carousel. Don't know WTF they are doing there, but don't plan any close-timed itineraries coming back through LAX.

In Manila Eva makes you weigh your bag before getting your boarding pass. I was once told my bag was overweight and would need to be checked in and I said, it weighs less than when I arrived from LAX and the lady replied this is Manila not LAX. Sure enough I check the dam thing and have to weight over an hour just like was mentioned above. So far that is the only complaint that I have against Eva.

Partly the issue with Manila is that Filipinos, left to their own devices on the honor system, will typically carry the contents of a small warehouse in their luggage. A higher level of control is perhaps warranted in Manila. I also suspect there is a Taiwanese/Chinese bias against Filipinos in general that infiltrates their SOP in MNL.
However,,,,, Myself. I must be special. I have never checked a bag with EVA. EVER. I only travel with carry-on. Not once in many, many, many, trips have they ever asked to weigh my carry-on bag. I'd be genuinely surprised if they ever did ask me.

At LAX, EVA has asked to weigh my carry on the last few times. Last Dec, they said that my bag was too heavy. I kind of bitched a little and they let me go. My buddy who had an equally heavy carryon told them he had his laptop in his bag, and they were fine with it.
At MNL, they weighed my (still somewhat heavy) carryon, but didn't say anything about it being too heavy. Sometimes it's just a matter of luck.

Question for those of you getting your carry-on bags weighed by EVA: are you in economy, Evergreen Deluxe/elite, business?
I've never encountered this, but I'm always in Evergreen Deluxe. I wonder if this is an economy kind of thing.

At LAX, they weighed my carryon even though I was flying Deluxe AND was checking in in the Bus. Class line. In MNL, they weigh ALL bags, regardless of class of travel.

All-- I've flown EVA from Seattle and they did "spot checks" just befre going down the jetbridge to the aircraft.. At lobby check-in they asked to see your carry-ons and many oversized and over quantity bags were checked at that point.. I only saw a few people get pulled aside just before boarding for carry-on checks...

In Nov, I flew business class from LAX to MNL. They weighed my bag at LAX. It was well over, but I just tell them I have a laptop in it and they ok'd it. I didn't really have a laptop in it. They slap a sticker on the bag that says 7.5kg on it and I was good to go.
They didn't weigh the bag in MNL or TPE where I stopped over in both directions.
