"My brother-in-law just sent me this link regarding the jet stream showing
that the high velocity jet stream goes right over the Japanese nuclear plant
and then on to the west coast of the USA. He is a retired nuclear scientist
and told me to get (the hell) out of northern Calisornia/Southern Oregon
ASAP. He has high level professional contacts who are involved with
containing the problem in Japan. They called him for advice. He told me it
is out of control and only a miracle will keep it from getting worse... much
worse. Please know he is a firm believer in the safety of nuclear energy and
we have had "discussions" about its safety and need. Good luck to all that
read this post.

NOTE- he claims the west coast will be "hit" within 24 hours if the
radioactive material gets into the jet stream."

the US west coast is at the bottom right....

If you want to play it safe, I found this as a preventation to the fallout:

It is important to ensure that we have adequate iodine levels BEFORE this fallout hits. How much iodine is recommended?
The CDC recommends using iodine to prevent injury form radioactive iodine fallout. Adults and women who are breastfeeding should take 130mg of potassium iodide. Children who are between 3 and 18 years of age should take 65mg of potassium iodide. Children who are adult size should take the adult dose. Infants and children between 1 month and 3 years of age should take 32mg of potassium iodide. Newborns from birth to one month of age should be given 16mg of potassium iodide.

When should you take iodine? For an acute exposure, you want to take iodine just before the exposure hits. Iodine is cleared out of the body within 24 to 72 hours after taking it. However, If you have been using ortho-iodosupplementation as I describe in my books and lectures (taking from 6-50mg/day of iodine and iodide), you should be covered. Remember, the goal is to not let the radioactive iodine bind in the body.

Potassium iodide can be found in many health food stores

I always travel with Potassium Iodide because you never know about these sorts of things (in fact, I missed the Japanese earthquake by not so many days).

One easy source, although perhaps too late for the present potential problem, is http://www.lef.org/Vitamins-Supplements/Item00577/Potassium-Iodide.html

By Laguy on Saturday, March 12, 2011 - 11:13 pm:  Edit

Well, I just noticed it is on back order at Life Extension (link above). It would appear there could be a shortage, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to grab some potassium iodide now if you find it somewhere.

Guess I'm a dead man walking now LOL, because I was on CX880 last night HKG to LAX they were showing that containment building explosion in BKK while I was waiting for my flight.

Unless they have a Chernobyl type meltdown and explosion caused by the fuel rods I would not worry about any nuclear fallout on the west cost.

By Laguy on Sunday, March 13, 2011 - 11:17 pm:  Edit

One problem with all this, among many, is the Japanese government is probably 100 times less transparent about these sorts of things than the not so transparent U.S. government. So I'm not sure we will have access to up-to-the-minute information about what is going on.

Yesterday, for example, I heard the Japanese spokesperson for the prime minister say everthing was under control and there wouldn't be a second explosion. From my perspective, that meant a second explosion was imminent!

Information Minister
The radiation, it ran in fear and was slaughtered.
No radiation here I tell you. Never!
Americans, always they lie about the radiation. Always. I tell you

I'd personally be allot more worried about what a random tsunami would do to North Jakarta then I ever would about a little Japanese radiation. Then again, I am quite convinced that if I ever meet an untimely demise it will be from crossing the street in some third world city, not from anything more exotic.

By Catocony on Monday, March 14, 2011 - 06:41 am:  Edit

Isn't it amazing how a decade or two of third-world travel and banging hookers bareback affects your concept of risk?

By Roadglide on Monday, March 14, 2011 - 09:29 am:  Edit

Hey, maybe this will cut down the number of big spenders from Japan, now if we can only get North Korea to attack the South we will have our playgrounds back to ourselves.

By Laguy on Monday, March 14, 2011 - 10:48 am:  Edit

Uhhhh . . . not funny Roadglide. Sorry.

By Hot4ass2 on Monday, March 14, 2011 - 01:14 pm:  Edit

who are the fucking idiots that built a nuclear power plant in a tsunami zone anyway. It needs to be at least 100 feet above sea level or flood zones and cooling water needs to be stored beside the reactor in rubber bladders that will survive a quake.

By I_am_sancho on Monday, March 14, 2011 - 04:56 pm:  Edit

Not looking good.

By Catocony on Monday, March 14, 2011 - 07:54 pm:  Edit

It's starting to look like a complete clusterfuck over there. I'm betting big on, after this all concludes, plenty of people are going to come forward with the "I knew the backup systems were at risk but didn't want to speak up" bullshit that you always get in Asia whenever there's a fuck-up. Deferral to superiors/elders, everybody following the same circuit in the homogeneous world that is Japan, gotta save face, blah blah. The seppuku swords should be getting a fresh sharpening over at Tokyo Electric.

Next time, build the nuke plants on high ground where a 30-foot wave won't lead to multiple core meltdowns.

By I_am_sancho on Monday, March 14, 2011 - 07:59 pm:  Edit

Wow, #4 just blew up too and that one wasn't even turned on when the whole thing started.

This is going down hill fast.

Can't be to much longer till Godzilla shows up.

By Roadglide on Monday, March 14, 2011 - 10:58 pm:  Edit

Shit, sounds like Bluelight is right. Last news brief said that they had left 6' of the fuel rods exposed, and they think they had a meltdown of some sort, and now have a 30km exclusion zone.

The Japanese are not the only ones that build nuke plants next to the beach. We have San Onofre in San Diego county.

By Copperfieldkid on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 - 09:53 am:  Edit

San Onofre is located in a very flat area, wouldn't take much to submerge most of it. Anyone that has driven by or flown over it can see it's very unprotected geographally.

By Catocony on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 - 08:15 pm:  Edit

I like the Japanese, they have multiple reactors on fire and melting down, and they're walking around with the little surgical face masks they have on.

Hey, if it's good for the flu, it'll stop radiation, right?

By Murasaki on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 - 09:41 pm:  Edit

Those masks are a common sight in Japan in the winter time, and are primarily worn by people who have colds. Given the extreme population density there, they do so to inhibit the spread of their cold to others. Some people also wear them as a preventive measure so that they don't get the flu or catch a cold in the first place. But they are mostly worn by people who are already sick.

And many nuclear plants around the world are located on coastlines, due to the simple fact that they need to be located next to vast quantities of water. California has Diablo Canyon and San Onofre directly on the coast. In fact Diablo Canyon is built directly on top of an earthquake fault to boot.

Are you sure about your dosage units? The recommended daily allowance of iodine is 150 micrograms. Your 6 milligram dose is 40 times that. What are the side effects of such massive overdose.

Potassium Iodide was all sold out at the local natural foods market in Tucson Arizona. However, I scored 180 tablets of KELP that has 400 mcg iodine each. My daily vitamin packs add another 150 mcg iodine. Main thing is to have the stash on hand, but I will stick with the 367% dose until there is a real threat and more information out there.

What are the other good sources of iodine? I seem to recall water purification tablets that we dropped into canteen using iodine as the disinfectant.

By bluelight on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 - 10:43 pm:  Edit

Don't know, I just copied and pasted the article. Since I couldn't find any Potassium Iodide in Pheonix I didn't double check it.

By Laguy on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 - 11:19 pm:  Edit

The adult dosage is 130 mg. I have some right next to me (from which I am reading the dosage) which was bought some time ago in the event of this sort of thing. Also,, see http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/EmergencyPreparedness/BioterrorismandDrugPreparedness/UCM072265

I don't believe iodine helps although perhaps there is some marginal benefit from ingesting some. Postassium Iodide is what is required as best as I can tell. Someone correct me though if they see something indicating I am wrong.

By I_am_sancho on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 - 01:34 am:  Edit

I'm inclined to believe the Potassium Iodide might be modestly effective in a relatively limited number of specific cases, but is much more effective creating a mass perception that the public is somehow being protected. Just another form of security theater.

Most likely you will not significantly benefit from the Potassium Iodide unless your environment is so contaminated by fallout that you are reduced to eating contaminated food and drinking contaminated water. Presumably under circumstances that you face starvation due to lack of uncontaminated food and water since no one would knowingly eat contaminated food or water if they didn't have to. And I would argue that if you are reduced to that point, you are pretty much screwed anyway. Although in that case, I suppose I would welcome the Iodine.

OTOH, if this thing does finally go totally to shit, over the top Chernobyl like and all in the worst kind of way, I could possibly see myself stockpiling some food and water.

You can get your animated death forecast here.

It doesn't protect you 100 percent, but it does protect against thyroid cancer (at least as caused by certain types of radioactivity) from what I understand. Given that it is dirt cheap and has minimal side effects, no reason not to take it if there is any radiation risk.

By Khun_mor on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 - 01:04 pm:  Edit

Thyroid cancer is THE only radiation side effect that potassium iodide prevents. It is useless for any other effects. Your kids will still have 3 arms and half a leg, your hair will fall out and you will get leukemia and every other cancer known to man.
Godzilla may be a better way to go - quicker and totally awesome !

By Catocony on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 - 02:08 pm:  Edit

Sancho, won't you just use whatever they're handing out at the free clinic?

By I_am_sancho on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 - 03:17 pm:  Edit

I still have those all those free condoms they gave me laying around somewhere. I presume they would protect me against radiation.

By Copperfieldkid on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 - 04:40 pm:  Edit

Some of you make Chicken Little look rational.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_iodide

The wikipedia article is pretty detailed as to what dosage and effect are. It provides some protection against Radioactive Iodine, but not much good for other radioactive elements.

Radioactive Iodine has a short half life and does not travel far, so the USA mainland should be safe.

Not so sure I would take a Hawiian vacation until the Japanesse have that cluster fuck under control.

By Copperfieldkid on Thursday, March 17, 2011 - 05:02 am:  Edit

GCL is there anything you wouldn't want to be eaten by?............

While the risk is low for dangerous levels of radiation reaching the West coast, I wonder what the risk level will be for flights to various other Asian destinations from the West coast of the US.

By I_am_sancho on Thursday, March 17, 2011 - 10:36 am:  Edit

Flying to Asia always exposes you to significantly elevated levels of radiation...... due to being at 38,000' for 14 hours at a time. Hasn't hurt me yet.
