It is interesting how two cultures (or should I say elements in two cultures) are different.
Japan Earthquake:

New Orleans Katrina:

When Hurricane Charley hit my neighborhood, the residents all got together and cut up the fallen trees and cleaned up the streets. When Katrina hit New Orleans the residents sat on their asses and waited for the government to do something. When they did get off their asses it was to loot.
I wonder if there will any fund raising concerts for Japan?

New Orleans rated on the third world country disaster scale.... somewhere above Haiti earthquake.... and very dramatically below Thailand tsunami. Sad to say, not to much sympathy from me for New Orleans. I'm sure anyone in New Orleans who my tax dollars saved would personally say "Fuck You" to me, face to face if they had a chance. Vast swaths of America have become third world.
OTOH, I feel genuine, heart felt sympathy for the Japanese. Whatever bad, or even just off color jokes I have to say about the Japanese, they have my utmost sympathy and respect.

Agreed, watching the Japanese pull together in a humane and civil way is quite impressive. Standing orderly in lines to get their basic needs, calmly in local shelters - quite something. Can you imagine the scene in New Orleans with thugs rioting, looting, and shooting each other? I am sure there is low life in Japan as well, but they appear to know when it is time to behave. Watching the Katrina event fold-out was at first shocking, then sad, but quickly became shameful. So far my feelings with Japan continue to get stuck at sad...
