Hey there guys,

As of Dec 2012, the best values (IMO) in cameras are:

1) Olympus xz-1 (~$200+) - great little camera, solid reviews.
2) Pentax K-01. Uses same sensor as Nikon d7000. Good bridge to learning photography. ~$450.
3) Sony Rx-100 - ~$600. Recently released to great acclaim.

As to why not your phone camera - well, phone cameras on smartphones (e.g. Iphone 5) are not bad but their limitations emerge at night or with fast moving objects.

The low light capabilities of the iPhone 5 are considerably better than any smartphone I've ever used, and easily 3x better than the iPhone 4s. Just an FYI
