New York Times, Friday July 30, World News D14 (Interpool)
Homicide Rate in Mexico takes big jump;
In the 1990 the official Murder rate of Mexico was 6.8 people per 100,000, clamed the Mexican government. However, with the new president Vicente Fox and his new Freedom of Information, the Murder rate has jumped to 41 people per 100,000. Compared to the United States in 1998 there was 7.1 people murdered per 100,000. Why the change? In Latin American countries, convictions are counted as the official homicide rate. The ousted PRI party that ruled Mexico for 71 years would keep many secrets from the people fearing that the truth would sway the voters into voting them out of office. And that’s exactly what happened Nov, 2 2000. Also, robberies increased 600% from the last count in 1990. Kidnappings for ransom number over 3000 a year.
Tijuana has the highest murder rate of all the cities in Mexico. However, the official numbers haven’t been released, but number two of the big cities is Culican in the state of Sinaloa. The murders were 580 for a population of 1.2 million people. That’s 52 per 100,000. That’s higher then Rio de Jenero Brazil. The official homicide rate for Mexico City hasn’t been released. However, it’s aspected to be about that of Tijuana and Culican.
In comparison, New York had 671 homicides for the year 2000 and it has a population of 8.6 million people. That’s 7.6 people murdered per 100,000. With the new openness we expect the official crime and jobless rate in Mexico to change too. In 1997 the Mexican government reported a jobless rate of 1.7% for the city of Tijuana Mexico.
