This is the best movie I've seen in years. Absolutely incredible - a total mind fuck. I had to watch it three times just to make sure I got it, and I still don't... You cerebral types like Kendricks et al ought to eat this one up. I won't describe it because that would give too much away - just rent it!!

Where have you been? the movie came out like almost a year ago!. I did enjoy it and with the reversed and fractured narrative it really keeps you on your toes trying to follow the plot twists. I made the mistake of bringing my wife, whose english isn't so hot to begin with, to see it..big mistake. Unless they come out with a version in espanol I wouldn't recommend taking a chica to see it.

No, this is most definitely NOT a chica flic - LOL!! And it would be even worse for a non-native English speaker. The plot progresses backwards through time... Actually, the plot (more or less) moves forward, yet the time in which the story happens moves backwards. Just one of the fascinating aspects of this film.

In the DVD version you can watch the movie backwards (forewards)

So, do you guys know who killed his wife?
Dick

IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN MEMENTO, PLEASE DO NOT READ THE FOLLOWING POST...IT IS A SPOILER:
I think it's been long enough that I won't spoil it for most folks by saying, but I wanted to at least give a heads up to anyone that hadn't seen it yet...he killed his wife...he accidentally injected her twice with insulin because of his memory lapses...it was really suicide though because she was testing him, thinking that he was faking it, or that his love for her would overpower the afflicition...basically, the story he gave about that other guy, was his own...sorry, I don't remember the names, but that's the basic motivation behind the entire movie really...the lead character (with the memory lapses) is trying to create a false history/ erase his past, to forget about the horrible mistake he made...

Rexxx,
I've seen the movie about 5 times now, and didn't really catch this. Is this something that they leave to the viewers imagination? Or is their some sound facts I missed in the plot that actually tell you this.
My question is, how is he trying to erase him killing his wife, when he wouldn't remember actually doing it because of his "condition"?

That's the theory put forward by some guys online and Roger Ebert kinda mentioned that a long while ago. Kinda makes sense, although there's no solid evidence in the movie that (SPOILER alert) tells us anything conclusive. In that respect I found the movie frustrating, though it was a roller coaster watching it the first time(there are those who said the 2nd time is better but I don't agree).

His buddy the cop guy basically tells him that he's been the guilty party all along, but that he's been playing this game with him to keep his mind off of it essentially...While the guy can't fully remember killing his wife, he created some false history of another guy (the balding guy with the glasses) which is actually him...sorry I don't have names, and this may sound even more confusing, lol...but this reason is essentially why mr. memory loss kills his buddy the crooked cop...they keep repeating this vicious cycle of mr. memory loss hunting down his wife's "killer" finding him and then realizing that he actually killed his wife on accident...by eliminating the cop, he eliminates his last true link to his past and can go on with the fantasy that he has avenged his wife's death...damn, now I gotta go back and watch this thing to make sure I"m not full of shit, lol...

I think you guys are right. That's my recollection, more or less. I had to watch it three times to get it, though.
BTW, did anybody catch that scene in the hospital where (I forget who) one of the characters, in like one frame of film, was switched. I.E. the camera is on one of the characters, and for one frame of film, another character appears. I forget which character(s) it was, but it's probably a hint. I only caught it the 3rd time I watched it. It's in one of the scenes at the hostpital, towards the end, I think.

After the first time I saw it, I went next door and watched Chopper. Now that was an awesome movie afternoon for me.

Memento was alright just for the gimmick. Played in normal order, it would not have been much of a film at all.

Alright Rexx, but how do we know his buddy didn't kill her and lie to him. Didn't his note says don't believe anything the guy says?
I guess it's a mystery til the end.
Superman you didn't see it in the theater when it first came out?
By Rexxx on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 06:43 am: Edit |
you have to remember though, that mr. memory loss was creating false clues for himself to erase his own guilt...remember him writing down the cop's license plate numbers and stuff, he was doing all that purposely to make him suspect the cop and cover up his link to his wife's death...
By Masterater on Thursday, November 21, 2002 - 10:32 am: Edit |
For me, it's still a theory Rex, what I understood was that the cop,the girl, and some other people where using Guy Pierce's "condition"
basiclly to turn him into a hitman for them.
They played him and made him believe that he was after his wife's killer and once he found him, he would kill him. After that, he would forget and start all over, but after a diffrent individual.
So he was the perfect killing machine because he had no guilt or remorse.

SPOILER ALERT - DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE
Here are my own theories:

Alright Rexxx, you have some good points.
Masterator, now that's something I've never heard before. That's cool.
Moviebuff your analysis is good too.
Btw, Momento worked alot better on the big screen than on DVD, even the director said so. I saw it on DVD and thought it wasn't have as good on the big screen, where you really share his point of view. When I saw it the first time the theater's light bulb went off in the last 20 minutes. Drove the audience nuts. It was so exciting at that time.
Now go see FEMME FATALE playing in the theaters! It may not be so 'high brow' as momento but it sure is entertaining. It has many suprises right up to the end. (Some people hate it though. But I think mongers like as will love it.)

The same director has another movie titled "Following" that I liked much better than Memento.
"Following" is b&w and about 74 minutes long.
Check it out.

NEW BATMAN MOVIE TO BE DIRECTED BY MEMENTO'S CHRIS NOLEN!
AWESOME!
So Mr Bill finally you're not pissed after dissing Tarantino and John Woo. Ease off on the viagra lol.
Rumor is that Guy Pearce is a possible Bruce Wayne. Just rumors.
'Following' (done before memento) is a fine(no budget)film.
Memento was written and directed by Chris based on his brother's short story. Following is written & directed by Chris.
